early powerflite (1956) transmission fluid

Recommended Posts

I use DEXRON in my 64 automatic trans. It too was designed to use Type A. No problems with the tranny. BTW, all Dexron trans fluids are compatible with each other.

Any of the Dexron AT fluids are okay to use in place of "Automatic transission fluid Type A".

I've used it in my '55 De Soto (Powerflite), '61 Belvedere (T-flite), '60 & '64 Chryslers (T-flite) with no fluid-rejection issues.

Where was your shift cable leaking from and how did you resolve it ?

( I think I have an issue with my '60 Windsor leaking from the pushbutton cable...)

The cable is leaking where it passes through the tranny case. After trying to seal it with RTV, rubber hose, and shring tubing, I resolved it with a catch pan full of kitty litter. I change the kitty litter every few months. It's the only freakin' leak in my fleet of misfit heaps, and it's on my favorite of the bunch.

Interesting...

Mine seems to be leaking only at highway speeds...

I can drive around town for weeks and not lose ATF; but one two-hour trip on the higway at 65 + and she'll lose anywhere from a pint to a quart of ATF.

The rubber cable sheath is loose and spongy the first 12 inches from where it connects to the tranny...
