Y6469
I need help before the garage catches fire. Put rebuilt carb on 30 model a ford. Started the car for a few minutes and the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe down to the beginning of the muffler were cherry red. I immediately turned the car off and turned off the fuel supply. I noticed the water temp on the motometer was not hot. Any suggestions?
Dave@Moon
My first thought would be a blocked exhaust pipe, perhaps with a mouse nest.

Dave@Moon
or all three, especially if it happened that fast.
oldiron
Y6469; it's timing. You are firing very late, and the fuel is still burning on the upward exhaust stroke. The final part of the burn then, is taking place in the exhaust manifold. Adjust your timing and things will be fine. Regards; oldiron
FomocoService
I agree with everyone else who said timing... Timing a Model A is easy but it's easy to over engineer the situation. Check this link, this is the best way I've seen to set the timing....http://abarnyard.com/workshop/timing.htm
