  1. A friend of my grandfather has been telling us for years that GM car's from the early to mid-1930s had chassis made of wood and then were boxed in by metal? But my grandfather has also heard that 1920s GM cars were the same way. My question is, is there any truth to this? Thanks in advance. Vintagecarguy.
  2. I am a journalist and author of several books (including MEN AND SPEED: A Wild Ride Through NASCAR's Breakout Season). I am currently writing a book about the early days of the auto industry, with a focus on Ford, Olds and GM. Despite extensive online research and a week in Michigan libraries and archives, I have failed to find the papers of Frederic L. Smith, whose father was one of the original investors in Olds, and who forced out founder Ransom in a corporate coup in late 1903 - early 1904 to become head of Olds Motor Works. Smith left the industry when Durant bought what was left of Olds in 1908. Does anyone know where his personal papers might be -- or can suggest an avenue of pursuit? you can reach me at pascoagwriter@yahoo.com or at www.gwaynemiller.com Many thanks! G. Wayne Miller Frederic L. Smith

  9. I need the side molding clips and the pinchweld molding clips for a 1960 Olds Dynamic 88 convertible. There are two types of clips for the side moldings and I need about 10 of each. Thanks, Brian
  10. Does anyone have a list of the all the available two-tone combinations for Oldsmobile in 1957? The paint charts do not include this information so I'm thinking it would have to be on a period dealer brochure or pamphlet. Thanks, Greg
  11. While the engine is being rebuilt, I thought that I would repaint some of the brackets and heating sheet metal. What sheen is OEM? Satin or semi-glass?
  12. When I started my car (1962 Olds F85 with 215) yesterday, the oil warning light would not turn off. A few seconds later, a loud chatter sound be began in the upper valve train. I took off the driver side valve cover and saw one of the valve had more upward travel than the rest. I checked the oil level and it was full and clean. Would the oil warning light come on if there was a weak or broken valve spring or is a low oil pressure issue or is it both? Is the oil warning sending unit faulty? Is there an issue with the oil pump?

    51' Olds Hydra-Matic trouble

Hi, new to this forum. I'm getting ready to tear down / partially disassemble my hydramatic and am in search of any other thoughts on my issue before I do. This started last fall and I have yet to resolve it. I posted this in the classic olds forum last fall and received some much appreciated feedback. Just looking for any other hydramatic tips or suggestions before I disassemble this thing. 1951 Olds hydramatic: driven out of drive way down the street and back first time in years. ( 10+ ?) Shifted late and hard. (nothing new) Pulled back into drive to drop the pan drain torus and clean screen, clean valve body... before I do I back up once and it sticks in reverse and will not let go. Reverse only... forward gears engage but will not move forward, bogs down as if under load (resisting reverse cone clutch is my guess) In neutral reving up, car inches forward a bit. No pushing the car forward in neutral unless cranking or idling. I've since drained pan, torus and cleaned screen, valve body (several times) checked linkage, checked the movement of the servos with air... I'm about to pull the tail shaft to remove the reverse clutch assembly. Any other thoughts? Much appreciated.
  14. I have recently discovered a barn gem. A 1935 Olds. 4 dr. with a straight 8 cyl engine (its huge !) under the hood. It was built in Oshawa, Ontario. Is the straight 8 rare? The interior (seats and headboard) are absolutely intact, its a restoration dream. Body almost mint.. Original glass, etc. I'm looking to figure out what this car is worth. Anyone help ? What size of engine was the 8 cyl. ? This car has been stored a long time, the government had no record of its existence since their records went electronic in 1975.
  15. One of the many business activities of R. E. Olds was that he was a banker. Note the signature at the bottom right on this bill.

  25. I have removed all of the valves from the engine. Now I need to get the springs out. Is there a trick to this? I have the big snap-on valve spring compressor that looks like a giant c-clamp. It doesn't do much good once the valves are out. Should I try to grab one of the lower spring coils and remove the retainer plate so that the tappet will enter the spring and thus allow the spring to drop low enough to remove? Do I need to get a different type of spring compressor? Any ideas are welcome. I need to get these out so I can remove the cam and get the block hot tanked. Thanks.
