  1. After a moderate time in storage, the 1970 Cadillac started well on her own battery. She was driven home, about ten miles - then it would not start as a result of a discharged battery. After a jump-start, a quick check showed that the wire between the alternator and the battery was right at 12-volts, rather than the expected 14 +/- volts which would have been typical. After checking wires and contacts, I removed the alternator and took it to the brand new Autozone store where they checked it and said that it was putting out over 14 volts. Since I plan to tour cross-country with this old girl (the car), I bought a new Voltage Regulator, and a new Alternator (which they also checked and was showing over 14 volts). Back home, I re-installed the old but good alternator and the new regulator. The same condition - only 12 volts, so then I swapped out for the new alternator - same lack of results !! What am I missing? In the old days we had to polarize by jumping across terminals on the regulator, but I didn't think this was a factor with an alternator. I'm at a loss, and don't have much more hair to pull out. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to get the system charging? I appreciate any help and advice for you all - notably the best bunch on the planet. Thanks in advance for your thoughts, Marty
  2. Hi I'm fixing up a 67 Rivieria that has been sitting for the past 5-6 years and I'm some electrical problems with the instrument panels, courtesy light switch and the climate lights. I took the dash and instrument cluster off, replaced the headlamp switch and I'm able to see dim lights behind the speedometer. I also replaced the lamps, helped a little but far from decent lighting. There are no bulbs behind the the oil pressure, coolant temp etc, but a small rectangular board wrapped in wire...is this suppose to light up? The lights behind the heater control won't illuminate, and the courtesy lights work when the door is open but when using the switch near the clock the lights won't turn on If I remove the wire behind the switch and ground it out the light works...where is the ground suppose to come from, because there is only one terminal behind the switch... Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Brandon
  3. Hello I have a 1989 Buick Reatta, I've been having a battery drain problem ever since I bought it but recently the drain grew so I put a kill switch in it. Now my car is fantastic.... Except for the past 3 days.... I'll be driving and all of a sudden EVERYTHING in my car shuts off, and then a few seconds later turns back on like all of my computers are restarting themselves, this will happen while I'm driving. But my computers don't seem to turn off because my mpg number doesn't reset or my trip number doesn't reset. It happens if I go over a small bump or so ermines I don't even need a bump. Yesterday I was driving on a smoothish road and all of a sudden my car does it again but this time my engine cut off... So I had to put it in park and restart my car. I don't know if it's the kill switch I don't believe it is but if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it. I do not know where to even start....

  5. Hi, I have what seems like an open curcit in my Delta 88 whenever I allow it to sit a few days between starting the battery runs down. I do not know if there is a corrolation but my fuel sending unit and my clock also do not work. Last month while I was working on the clock I shorted out the fuse and during the time the fuse was out the battery held its charge. Any assistance on how I can find the problem? Thanks
  6. Hello I'm 19 years old and I just bought my first car, a 1989 Buick reatta! I'm trying to fix some things on it and I do not know what I need to replace... The car exterior lights will not shut off. I even take the key out and the lights on the exterior are still on so I have to take out the fuze dealing with the lights. My dad said something about a left switch assembly but I can't find it anywhere on the Internet. What do I need to replace to fix the exterior lights? And the computer keeps popping up talking about electrical problems, I don't know if I need to reset the computer or how to find out what electrical part of the car needs to be replaced.... If anyone can help me I would GREATLY appreciate it! I love this car and can't wait to fix it! Thanks
  7. Need help. I picked up a 1927 Chrysler all original down to the leather brakes and it ran perfect. I have never had a 6 volt system before let alone a positive ground system. With that said, I purchased a new battery and hooked the ground to the positive (poof smoke). Engine turns over just fine, I no longer have lights or spark. I have been unable to locate any type of fuse. I have installed a new started solenoid and a new coil, still nothing works except the starter. Has anyone done this before or do you have any suggestions.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
  8. Hi everybody, I am new to the forums and hopefully somebody can shed some light on my problems with my Reatta, which I LOVE by the way. My speedometer and most of my touch screen, just do not work most of the time. About 90% of the time, it just says "electrical problem" where my speed should be displayed. However even when the speedometer and the rest of my dashboard is out, my radio is still fully functional. I can not go to the "gages" "climate" or any other page, just my radio. But in the rare occasion that the dashboard works, everything works great! So anyway I hope somebody can help me, thanks! Tyler

    90 Reatta 00 ERROR

    Help, the display dashboard/console blinks and returns with the 00 ERROR at first it would be there 5-15 seconds -- now if blacks out for 30 minutes multiple times during the day. Please help me what is causing this and what is the best options for a fix? Thanks
  10. Hi, I hope someone can help or give some ideas for me. I drive a 90 Reatta hand-me-down from my sister. Needless to say she didn't take all that good care of the car, but it still runs. However, in the last two months I've been driving it, occasionally it will not start. I know it's not the battery or its connections, because the radio plays and I get dash lights. Basically what happens is when I turn the key to 'on', dash lights and radio turn on, but when I turn it further to 'run/start', it goes dead. My dad discovered that if I wiggle the key in the ignition or adjust the wheel up or down, it will usually start after a few attempts. However, just recently it didn't start after about 10 minutes of wiggling and adjusting. I'm assuming this is some kind of electric problem, maybe grounding in the ignition. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix or if they've had problems like this? Thanks in advance, Jennifer
  11. Hello, for all you electrical guys I'm having this problem with my electrical system drove my car from work to local market and came out and my battery was drained. I erroneously thought it was a bad starter changed my starter brushes, cleaned my armiture, and commutator plates, when i continued to have the same issue i changed my battery, cleaned my cables and ground connections and no resolution, have any ideas where to start this electrical stuff is all greek to me...guess I gotta learn how to use a volt meter!:confused:
