  1. Resellers tell me that the exhaust manifold for my 1940 Special is the same for 1939 through 1953. Is that true? If so, why are so many of the available used manifolds cracked? Didn't Buick ever figure out how to make an exhaust manifold that would not crack? Also, why are the reproduction exhaust manifold so expensive ($695 and up)? Is there a reasonable alternative here? I have had my manifold braised with bronze twice and it cracked again, right beside the repair. Help!!
  2. Hello, I am still working on my exhaust system for the 1941 Studebaker Commander 226 - 11A B3. I believe it is a 226 CI. I need to find another manifold for my car. Are there other years and other engine sizes that match that manifold? Do you know anyone who has one for sale? My problem is that I took the manifold to a machine shop to have the "exhaust pipe to manifold" surface refaced. Unfortunately the guy set it up wrong and cut off it at a slant so that 1/4 of an inch on one side of face is lower than the original angle. Now that the pipe mounts crooked and doesn't line up. I don't think there is enough meat left on the manifold to resurface it straight now. Have you ever seen a grown man cry? Short term I'll try getting the pipe bent to get it to mount up but long term I need to replace the manifold. Thanks for any info you have! John in NJ
  3. Saw the thread about a month ago on this. I need to hear from whoever has one, even with the intake still on it. I'll even pay shipping & be happy to have it. I know they weigh about a ton. Thanks!
  4. Hi all, I'm trying to find a good exhaust manifold for the straight 8 as well as the inlet manifold. Both mine are cracked. There are some similarities between 1938-1941 engines, thanks James

  6. Motorcraft carb and Sheffield manifold from '79 Capri. $150.00 picked up North Jersey or delivered to Hershey.
  7. I have a 1929 Model A coupe. My copper manifold gaskets blew and needs to be replaced. It was brought to my attention that I didn't do it right the first time so I am doing this again and want to do it right this time. I am getting conflicting things to do. I had a friend tell me not to use the Indian Head shellac on the manifold gaskets because it gets too hot and will blow plus you don't use shellac on copper gaskets but in my Model A for the restorer book says that I should use shellac on the manifold gaskets. I also can't find if there is a certain torque to use when tightening the manifold down. I really need to know what is the best method before I mess up again. All thoughts are welcome

  9. I know more about Fords than Buicks, but I am trying to help out my uncle who as a '48 Super that he's trying to get running. He has a guy working on it and we are apparently looking for an intake manifold. The one that was on the car has a large hole on one side and the mechanic says it is beyond repairing. I was down there this weekend (car is about 60 miles south of where i am) and took a picture of it. It has 4 bolts where the carb attaches. You can see a picture of what we need here. If anybody should have one, know where I might look, or at least pass along a little more detail on what we need, would be greatly appreciated. Proving to be very challenging trying to find this...
  10. I just bought a 1949 Dodge sedan that I'm fixin' to restore. The exhaust manifold gasket has a hole in it, so I need to replace it. As this is such an old car and it doesn't look like the manifold's been off in a month of Sundays, does anyone have any advise on how to take it off without breaking the bolts or causing any other headaches? Thanks!
  11. I have a 1939 Buick Roadmaster which I am restoring. The valve body has a flapper inside. On the outside, on one side of the valve body, there is a thermostatic coil. On the other side there is a metal weight. No spring there but it appears there should be one. When you turn the weight until it stops, the flapper closes 90%. When I move the weight the other way, the flapper closes 100%. These are my questions: 1) when the engine is cold, should the flapper be closed? 2) when the engine is hot, where should the flapper be positioned? THe problem I have is that I do not know if I got to put a spring. Also how to put the thermostatic coil correctly, in order for the the flapper to work properly. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks (Pics attached)
  12. If anyone has a good, uncracked, functional center manifold for sale for my 1939 Buick Roadmaster, please contact me. Unfortunately, the one I have has broken apart at one of its sleves. If you have the center manifold for belonging to any of these following cars, then it will fit my car : <TABLE cellPadding=2 width="60%"><TBODY><TR><TD class=main width="30%" cellpadding="10">Make</TD><TD class=main width="30%" cellpadding="10">Model</TD><TD class=main width="40%" cellpadding="10">Year Range</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Series 60</TD><TD class=main>1939 - 1951</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Century</TD><TD class=main>1939 - 1951</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Series 70</TD><TD class=main>1940 - 1951</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Roadmaster</TD><TD class=main>1939 - 1951</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Series 80</TD><TD class=main>1939 - 1942</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Series 90</TD><TD class=main>1939 - 1942</TD></TR><TR><TD class=main>Buick</TD><TD class=main>Limited</TD><TD class=main>1939 - 1942</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
