  8. Hey guys, I'm currently working on replacing the entire brake system on my 1954 Pontiac Chieftain. However, I've been running into some problems with the master cylinder. I ordered one online a few weeks ago and I installed it and bled the brakes. Whenever I pressed on the pedal nothing happened with the shoes and there was just a little geyser inside the reservoir of the master cylinder. I assumed the master cylinder was defective, thinking that fluid is just leaking past the piston. I bought another one and the same thing happened. Is there something wrong with the master cylinders or am I just doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

  11. In 1978, I found myself in Arizona at a drag race working for Wide World of Sports, and I saw an ad in the paper that said "54 Buick Special Convertible. Driver. Runs Good." So I stole the company rental and drove 75 miles to see it. Love at first sight. I gave the guy $50, not to sell it to anyone else, got back to Los Angeles, sent him ALL the money ($1800), and instead of getting ripped off, he drove it to California to me! It was my only car for 10 years. White with red interior. I had to hang my head out the window to drive in the rain when the wipers would lock in the open position, and I breathed the fumes in the hot summer stop-and-go traffic. But I loved that car, and swore I would never become one of the many people who would stop me, go all misty, and say "I used to have a car just like that". I swore I'd never sell it unless it meant losing my house. But time marched on. I wanted air conditioning. And seat belts. I became gun shy of the frontal lobotomy dashboard, and the cardiac bypass steering column, and weary of the people flagging me down at 70 mph on the freeway to ask "What year is it?" I bought a Honda. And Fred started an oft repeated cycle of sitting, getting a new 3E battery, getting rolling again. And then sitting. Until 1999. Am I ashamed to say I stopped starting him up? Taking him out? Buying him a new battery? Yes. I'm very ashamed. Now I've retired. Today I called AAA and with the help of a flatbed. AND a second tow truck, I got him towed to a mechanic who SAYS he's great with 50's cars. We'll see. I know Fred'll never be a show car. I don't care. I love that car and I want to do right by him. If you have any suggestions, or referrals for Buick loving mechanics in Los Angeles or Glendale or thereabouts, please let me know. I'm waiting to hear the diagnosis. What will it take to get him up and around? I'll keep you posted. Wish us both luck. And please, don't hate me! Joyce
  12. not used to forums, I posted the following to the AACA forum this morning. I received a reply suggesting I post it to the Packard forum so here goes... I'm new to this forum and looking to sell my 1954 Packard 8 Convertible. the car has 70k original miles on it. top is good but it's black instead of the original dark green. good boot, good interior, minimal rust in the trunk, overall solid car. I was told the engine was rebuilt and then it was driven very few miles before being put in storage. the owner told me while the engine was being rebuilt they fell in love with and bought a new Satellite convertible, the reason they put the Packard in storage. they still have that Satellite and it's a beauty! I have a receipt from 1967 for inspection ($1) and installation of the new convertible top ($47.50) at that time it had 600 miles less on it than it has now. all the trim is there- the skirts, hood ornament, wheelcovers, chrome trim. if I were going to keep it, I would just get it painted, do tires and brakes, polish up the chrome as much as it will polish, and drive the car. the original dash is very nice still, the car has been stored inside for over 40 years. it was last registered in 1968. I don't know what they're really bringing as so few of them come up for sale, there were only 863 of this model built. this may well be a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone :-) I even have the original factory workshop manual and the glove box owner's manual. I am the 3rd owner, the previous owner bought the car in 1958. the oil and coolant were recently changed out and the car fired up off a gas can- sounded very good and was yard driven. will entertain serious offers- car is located in Virginia. Best Regards

  22. I'm looking for a little bit of information if someone is so inclined. I am looking for a great source of NOS or Original Re-chromed bumpers, specifically a rear 3-piece bumper for a 53/54 Chevrolet Sedan. I have called around to just about all the 53/54 parts suppliers I could find and have not had any luck, and was at first holding out to find a real nice original one.. to match my driver condition 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air... but am now realizing that may be a pipe dream... and many folks have offered their good and strait cores to me, but I was hoping to find a bumper with excellent original chrome or an older rechrome job... Does anyone know of any real good quality replaters who sell original or replated original bumpers? I'm thinking my best bet might be to find someone like this as a parts source, not necessarliy someone who deals in only chevy parts. And I would feel better purchasing from a shop with a great reputation. Thank you in advance for any insight or advice. Please E-mail me at arb225@comast.net with any information or leads... Attached is a picture of the vehicle I am looking to get the bumper for. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

  24. I see no evidence from period photographs or any of the 1954 color charts that Buick offered their Century convertible with a two-tone paint scheme (divided by the sweep spear). They all appear to be monotone. Can any Buick experts confirm this? Thanks.
