Thanks guys ! I know someone’s out there that can help !

  2. Ive looked at several reference books and can’t seem to find where the vinyl top color is spelled out.  But the car in question ( a fixer) shows no signs of ever having a  vinyl top?? We’re the 2 digits after paint always a vinyl top or something else?
So anyone able to decode it?

  4. Or it could have been something where a memory of title companies that might be helpful rather than dealing with an 86 yr old guy might be easier to get done and  no one asked for cheaper. . Then there’s always what if your local DMV isn’t open often and requires appointments or it could be just a Holiday . I guess the “rare”word can be used for  maybe a Tucker or DuPont surely  I should have said merely  “interesting “.. ?
As  it’s worked out (currently) grilling Grandpa under a hot spotlight  he lost the title he had and is attempting to get a duplicate! And yes we tried local who finally told us only Texas could do it ..

But ..Not orange with 4 on the floor.. thankfully just another old car to save !

  5. Guys you are getting way off topic into other areas. The guy has a registration in his name but never sent in the form for the title he is 86!

I remembered some states only require a registration and I thought there were title services to get that done .. maybe I was wrong?   guess we just wait for the process via snail mail .

  6. As a kid growing up in NYC midtown East.  My childhood memory is that the car was on a sedan chassis with the padded roof and blind quarters . I knew the car seeing it often around town at The Plaza and the Hilton.. once it was for sale in NYT. But I missed it .. I’m wondering where it is ? Anyone know of the car or have info or pics? LMK

  7. As a kid growing up midtown East I often saw a 55 Imperial sedan ( not Limo body) with a blind quarter and Derham type roof and I believe a tan broadcloth interior. I’d see it at the Hilton and also the Plaza Hotel .

Additionally I think it had a tiny blue glassed illuminated lantern light mounted above the center windshield.  I’m guessing that it was a signal to or from the Chauffeur but unsure it’s actually use?
Does anyone know this car or know someone who might?
I always wanted it and it reminds me of my NYC childhood! Like to know what happened to her!

  8. That’s what I thought but the odd  rear window? Coachbuilt?  What about the amber front lights? Considering 42 I’m guessing was a low production year how rare would this be someone ought to save it.. Btw way do you feel it’s on a modern chassis n not just wrong wheels ?

    Thanks,

    RM

  9. Guys most leather is surface painted , some are in fact drum dyed.  I used to deal in leather.. so here is what I think I know (in here there’s always someone who thinks, or in fact may know differently, possibly more than I . But I enjoy learning too) .. there are several types of leather  and some have a different hand (a fabric term for how it feels and drapes which dictates uses). For example. 1955/56 Imperials originally had a very soft subtle hand almost like a thick kid glove type leather and feels wonderful in their stuffed pleating. While a 53 Skylark or 60 Lincoln would have a stiffer more “board like” hand. These leathers were all surface painted and they held shapes better than softer leathers. So while you can try to make a 53 Eldorado interior out of a softer leather it will never look right for this type of leather is wrong for the style of that interior. In fact, back in the day often the seat edge piping had a wire core to keep the shape of the seat edges and some pleating t heat  had cardboard inner pieces (between the leather and foam backing) to keep pleating looking crisp n correct. It’s often easy to spot a redone interior for these reasons n others.  Additionally, some leathers are embossed with grain like a 58 Limited or Eldorado Biarritz using a more pronounced graining like Cape Buffalo or 61 Eldo with Ostrich embossed graining, Cadillac crests or LeBaron Eagle motif. Painted leathers the colors can wear off but can be resprayed where that becomes a more difficult chore with softer leathers like gathered looks n pleats in newer cars. Of course those leathers a thinner to crest that type of design.  Bridge of Weir leather I think was Mark 11 maybe some other cars is a bit between soft n stiffer leathers it’s thicker but has a slightly softer hand.
And this story about stuff leather is just dirty?? Really? Was the car in the Outback??  When your hands get dirty after cleaning them n moisturizing them are they softer?  To me leather that has sun, water, or age issues gets dried out .. period! Yes, a little moisture and oils can help soften it ..if it’s not too far gone!
