  1. That is a short regional trip of 400 miles. Most car haulers do not haul a car if it does not drive on & off a trailer - they do not have winches. Most car haulers leaving the Los Angeles area want to go up I-5 to Portland or Seattle or at least to Sacramento - if they take your car they have to find another one to pick up to continue on their way. You are better off to haul that yourself. Otherwise - be prepared to pay mileage both ways for someone to do a “ turnaround trip “. Jim
  2. I had lunch with Skip yesterday in Uniontown, PA at Mark C's Diner. He is helping me research The Crow & Crow-Elkhart Motor Companies in Elkhart, Indiana. These are images of a 1942 Lincoln Zypher Convertible Skip restored. There are 7 believed to exist according to the Lincoln Zypher owners club. Some of the 7 are parts cars. This is the 3rd one to be restored. It took 5 years to complete including 2 years at the trim shop. When it came to Skip it was all apart and incomplete. He over saw Paint and Body work & had all the plating done, He did all stainless repair and polishing - all assembly and adjustments. First showing was at 2017 AACA Fall meet in Hershey PA where it won a 1st Junior award. It was selected for consideration for a National Award at the AACA Annual Meeting in Feb. at Philadelphia, PA. It won the Ford Lincoln Mercury Award. The next showing will be at Gettsyburg, PA in July. Jim
  3. Custom built bumper pull heavy ass 34 foot box - 5 foot extended tongue. Triple 5200 pound straight leaf spring axles - high clearance to not bottom out the rear end when crossing low driveways - that leads to broken welds on the rear end which causes racking & roof tearing. 8 foot rear barn doors - 7.5 foot tall x 6 foot wide curbside barn doors to side load in front of the vehicle - surface mount 50K rated etrac you can roll a car over without winching. I use Mac’s padded axle straps to tie down to the axles and/or frame - usually cross the ratcheting nylon straps to keep the vehicle from shifting - I normally leave the vehicle in neutral - no need to go alongside the vehicle to put it in or out of gear. Jim
  4. Load it rear end first - have a forklift or a piece of equipment lift the front end while you pull it on the trailer using the winch - unload in the same manner. Jim
  5. It depends on the knowledge and insight of the vehicle inspector. Like every other profession - it varies. If you are selling a car and agree to consider serious prospective Buyers who live a distance away - it is part of the selling process. Jim
  6. I winch all vehicles on & off my enclosed trailer. Because I also transport vehicles from rollback tow trucks - cargo on skids or pallets - I use commercial aluminum ramps. The roadway is not always level & paved - ramp doors can quickly warp and fail. Thru trial & error I settled on a Harbor Freight 12K 12VDC winch & wireless remote control. This winch offers a slow speed combined with the gearing designed to load & unload vehicles - it also has a spring loaded cable tensioner for the drum. Since I use my winch daily - I installed a deep cycle 12VDC battery adjacent to the winch inside the trailer. Charging is done by the 30 amp 12VDC circuit built in to the 7 way plug from my tow vehicle. I transport just about every sort & manner of vehicle - once the vehicle is lined up straight there is no need to guide it on or off the trailer. I load & unload on an upgrade and let gravity do the work. Jim
  7. Don't know why you want to paint the walls ? Put rubber stall mats on the floor - you can replace a mat it it gets an oil or gas spill - install groove side up to trap fluids. Jim
  8. Neither did I contact you - I am not soliciting your business. I posted on this thread because I was notified about it. Jim
  9. Someone sent me a message about this thread - since I am mentioned above .... I have been hauling since 2006 - have been here on the AACA forum since 2008. I provide Direct Enclosed Transport for the MTFCA Museum in Richmond, IN. I have safely hauled at least (9) vehicles for the museum over the years. Regarding this transport request - my advice would be to store the car until March or April when an independent hauler could build a trip to transport it: It is not just an 850 mile trip - you have to drive empty to the pick up location. Once you drop off - you have to continue with another load or you will sit in the Cold burning thru cash - waiting for another Haul out of the Cold. This Hauler sums it up - short & sweet but right on target: Driving a truck hauling an enclosed trailer in a bad winter is not a smart thing to do. I have had calls requesting car transport in and out of areas experiencing temperatures well below normal combined with ice - hail - freezing rain - snow. I refuse to risk my life - my equipment - or a customer’s vehicle because they can’t wait until Spring when safe driving conditions allow for safe transport. If you decide to purchase a vehicle during a bad winter - make arrangements to store it until the Spring. I am available currently to haul one vehicle from Phoenix, AZ to Salinas, CA on February 5th. I will be available for direct enclosed auto transport out of Las Vegas, NV on February 13th with 32 feet of enclosed trailer space. Jim AACA - HCCA - EFV-8 - MTFCA - MTFCI Member
  10. Again, i transport cars every day. I took this picture today. You don’t to pay for a deck over trailer, straight axles attached to 4 inch channel mounted below the trailer frame will give you no fender wells - additional height will limit bottoming out the rear - you can purchase Race Ramps to help decrease ramp angle - I opt for rear barn doors with aluminum ramps. Jim
  11. I just watched Bullitt last night again Then I ran across this .... @ https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/detroit-auto-show/2018/01/14/2019-ford-mu stang-bullitt/1022006001/ @ https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2018/01/14/authenticating-the-b ullitt-mustang Jim
  12. Anyone else here bumper pull an enclosed car hauler trailer just about every day ? Year round in every state ? I do - here is what I have learned thru experience: Money is not necessarily a reflection of quality - actual construction features are .... Most low quality enclosed car hauler trailers DO NOT have a full perimeter steel frame - they have (2) frame rails set in from the edge and use " outriggers " to connect to the outside wall - these trailers break apart causing the roof to tear from twisting - I bought one of these trailers from " Freedom Trailers " as my first trailer & it lasted less than a year .... A full perimeter steel tube frame is a mandatory starting point with solid welds - it makes for a heavier frame less likely to flex & break. 8 inch steel tubing that is 3/16" nominal thick is the best perimeter frame design provided it has solid welds. Trailers are built on an assembly line utilizing production methods adopted to save the manufacturer time & money. Specifying construction features will increase production time & result in more expense - be prepared to pay more for a better built trailer. A unitized frame where the floor - sidewalls - roof bows are in alignment is the strongest design if full welds are used, if this is not possible have at least (2) structural supports that " wrap " the components together installed at the front & rear. Run a third center steel tube frame member from the tongue to the first axle. Make sure you have a " one piece roof " with no screws installed thru the top frame under it down into the trailer. Most low quality trailers have .024 inch thick exterior aluminum walls - these ripple & flex - .030 thick walls are the minimum you should spec. Most low quality trailers use screws drilled into the top roof bows from above to hold the roof trim panels inside the trailers in place, these back out & tear the roof material over time. If you have a strong frame - the other details are personal choices that vary from user to user. Jim
  13. From a practical standpoint - you can’t reverse any damage that has been done. Many years ago I was driving on the I-80 turnpike & stopped at a BP station to fuel at one of the turnpike rest areas - I wasn’t paying attention & topped off one of my F350 7.3 IDI Dually fuel tanks with unleaded from a green handled pump. Immediately I had problems & realized what I had done - lucky there was no permanent damage. 60 miles is a different story ....... Jim
  14. Good news for those looking for an American made trailer tire .... Starting earlier this year Goodyear introduced an American Made ST Trailer Tire.@ https://corporate.goodyear.com/en-US/media/news/goodyear_launches_american_manufactured_trailer_tire.html I buy my at Discount Tire/America's Tire Store because they offer free replacement certificates that are not based on pro-rated tire tread I have been running them all year long on my triple axle 34 foot enclosed car hauler trailerJim
  15. You start at the beginning. What is the loaded weight of the trailer you are pulling ? That is determined by the curb weight of the vehicle combined with the curb weight of the empty trailer you put it in. The sum of the two is your load. Your load determines your tow vehicle selection. Jim
  16. December 1st I just replaced the alternator today I also replaced the serpentine belt - belt tensioner - idler pullies Jim

  18. I tow an enclosed trailer every day. Trailer manufacturers build what they can get the public to buy that is easy for them to put through an assembly line. Straight axles on the trailer raise the height roughly 4 inches over a standard 4 inch drop axle - if you just substitute this you can reduce the height of the wheel well inside the enclosed trailer by the same amount. The addition of the 4 inch angle iron will leave you with a flush floor and no fender wells. Trailer manufacturers do not want to do this because it changes the assembly line procedure so you will meet resistance. As I mentioned before, you have a higher deck which means a sharper angle for loading. But you also have more ground clearance & less chance of bottoming out on the back of the trailer. To each his own .... Jim
  19. Straight axles instead of drop axles on your enclosed trailer mounted on 4 inch channel below the trailer frame will leave you with no fender wells. Your trailer will sit higher - better ground clearance. Higher deck means sharper angle - Race Ramps can take care of that. Jim
  20. Here is a sweet pair ..... The Model 95 Rampside is turbocharged direct fuel injected. I have a standing offer to buy it if he ever wants to sell it - the only vehicle I ever hauled that I offered to buy .... Jim
  21. Bad Dreams Don’t Necessite Bad Car Builds Sometimes a nightmare should be left in the imaginary world Jim
  22. The car is SOLD. If folks who had issues with the Franklin and did not to buy it because they did not like the car or did not have the money to buy it - they should refrain from letting their fingers do the talking on the forum unless they have actually seen the Franklin in person during the time it was for sale. I saw the car in person - I transported it - I have also hauled a lot of other classic cars over the years - it was a nice car. End Of Story. Jim
  23. I transported this 1930 Franklin. I met the dealer - we talked about cars - he seems like a good guy. The Franklin is a solid car and came with extras to boot. Jim
