  1. I'm still chasing valve. lifter, cam, chain noise. I have re-ground valves, lifters and cam and still have a rattling noise. Is the chain suspect? Is there a supplier of replacement timing chains? Rockne model 41 Part no 175874, also used on models 54 and 55. Appreciate any info or guidance. Dick
  2. With a little oil added I get: 65,70,80,75,70,75. Looks like adding the oil gives about 10 lb. more than dry. What should I expect from this engine, I just had it re-ringed? Dick
  3. On my 32 Rockne, I finally got to checking the compression. Measures 55 to 67 PSI with an engine that has been running but has been idle for about a month. Someone told me to add a little oil to each cyl. and check again, what should I expect if I did that? Is the 55 to 67 spread ok? Is 55 lower than can be expected? Dick
  4. HOORAY, A 1/2 TON ARBOR PRESS FROM HARBOR FREIGHT TOOLS, SOAK IN 10W30 AND LOTS OF FORCING, CUSSING AND POUNDING I GOT IT IN THERE. HOW IN THE WORLD DID THEY EVER MAKE THESE THINGS IN A FACTORY AND MAKE MONEY, MAYBEE I'M ON TO SOMETHING THERE! THANKS MUCH FOR THE RESPONSES, MUCH APPRECIATED. DICK
  5. WISH THERE WERE SCREWS, IT DOESENT LOOK LIKE THE INSIDE LIP IS REMOVABLE, PERHAPS IF I SOAK THE FELT IN OIL I CAN JAM IT IN THERE.
  6. Any ideas on how to change the felt donut for the crankshaft seal on the timing gear cover for a 32 Rockne. I took the old one out with an owl and screwdriver. Kinda wish I hadn't. Dick
  7. I have looked at a lot of Rockne's and never seen one like this. Dick
  8. To Study 8, great info and help. Since temperatures are in the single digits and houshold projects are stacking up, I'm going to take a Study (Rockne) breather 'till next week. After reading the "ALL SIXES 1928-1940 manual" I believe it's telling me that this engine (with my timing chain) was used on models 41,54, &55. Other models with 6cyl engines with timing chain were GE,GJ,GL,S1,53,A and the 30,31 Rockne. The manual doesn't address the source of these engines, but the Fred Fox article in your last post would lead one to believe that the model 55 (which shared engines with the 41 Rockne) were Studebaker built. An interesting study would be to determine power plant sources vs Studebaker models. Perhaps someone has already done this. I am in Minneapolis, email: kemprop@msn.com should you need to write or if phoning would make sense email me and I'll get back with a cell number. Thanks again for you efforts. Dick
  9. I KINDA FIGURED IT WAS A NOMAL THREAD BY THE WAY THE CRANK SLOTS WERE CONFIGURED. I NOW HAVE THE ENGINE JACKED UP A COUPLE OF INCHES AND THE DAMPER/PULLEY REMOVED AS WELL AS THE CHAIN COVER. ANY ONE KNOW HOW MUCH SLACK THE CHAIN SHOULD HAVE OR AM I THINKING ABOUT SOMETHING THATS UNNESSARY. NEXT I NEED TO REMOVE THE CAM GEAR AND CHAIN, IF ANYONE HAS SUGGESTIONS OR CAUTIONS, IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE HELP DICK
  10. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT THE DAMPER AND PULLEY ARE REMOVED AS A UNIT BY REMOVING THE LARGE HEX CRANK NUT. WOULD THIS BE CW OR CCW WHEN FACING THE ENGINE?
  11. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP I WILL FIND A 1 3/8 SOCKET AND HAVE AT IT TOMORROW. FACING THE ENGINE, DO I LOOSEN IT CW OR CCW? I HOPE IT COMES OFF AS EASILY AS YOU INDICATED. STANDBY, WHEN I GET IT OFF THERE MAY BE MORE QUESTIONS DICK
  12. Having never posted pictures, please be patient while I figure this out. dick
  13. ROBIN, THANKS FOR THE THOUGHT, THIS CAR HAS A HAND CRANK CENTER GIZMO THAT ACCEPTS AN OLD FASHIONED CRANK STARTER. DO YOU THINK THAT REMOVING THIS IS THE SECRET. I'M NOT SURE HOW YOU CAN GRAB ON TO IT. DICK
  14. THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE. WHO IS THE 32 STUDY GUY? HAVING NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, AND WITH A SERVICE MANUAL JUST 30+ PAGES LONG WITH NO DETAIL ON THIS PROJECT, I THINK THE SCREWS ARE THREADED INTO THE CRANK PULLEY. SO WHEN I GET THE VIBRATION DAMPER OFF THE NEXT TASK WILL BE TO REMOVE THE CRANK PULLEY. WHEN THIS IS DONE THEN THE CHAIN COVER CAN BE EASILY REMOVED GIVING ACCESS TO THE GEARS AND CHAIN, AND THEN THE LIFTERS AND CAM. DICK
  15. Regarding a 1932 Studebaker, I am attempting to remove the cam for a lifter and cam re-grind, The vibration damper attached to the face of the crank pully needs to come off so there is access to the timing gear/chain cover. The damper is attached thru the rubber isolators with 4 large head SLOTTED 3/8 inch screws. (heads are 7/8 inch) and I can't budge them even with an impact screwdriver. Any thoughts on how to remove these? Dick
  16. Regarding the 1932 Rockne 75 with lifter clatter, I want to have the cam and lifters re-ground. I am having trouble removing the vibration damper which needs to be done so there is access to the timing chain and cam. There are four 7/8 inch flat head screws on the vibration damper that I can't budge with an impact hammer tool. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I don't want to heep hammering on this and break something. Thanks, Dick
  17. Thanks for all of the comments, I have learned a lot. Think I'll live with the noise for now and be on the lookout for a cam and lifters. Dick
  18. Thanks for the response, since my post I have talked to several knowledgable folk in the ASC. They agree that the valve clearances should not be tightened closer than the specs. I'm told that most of these engines were quiet when new and if there is now bothersome clatter then the tappets need to be re-surfaced and the cam re-ground. I think I am going to live with the noise for now, perhaps when the body is back on the chassis and the hood flaps down, it won'be as noticeable. Dick
  19. I recently had my Rockne model 75 6 cyl engine re-built with new rings and bearings. Also new exhaust seats and valve re-grind. The engine runs great but there is a lot of valve clatter. The manuals state that you should not lower the valve clearances to quiet the lifters but I have to say the motor was a lot quieter (although there wer other problems including low oil pressure and smoking) before the re-build. My re-builder stated that the valves were adjusted much closer than the spec requirements when he opened it up. He insists that the specifications should be adheered to and that the settings should not be altered to quiet the clatter. Since the engine was quieter before the re-build and ran well, would I be in trouble if I tightened up om the cold .007 Exh and .004 Int settings. If any of the readers of this post have experience with valve clatter and spacings I would be grateful for yopur thoughts, Thanks, Dick
  20. I recently had my Rockney 75 6 cyl engine rebuilt with new rings, bearings, cleanup etc. The re-built engine runs great but there is a lot of valve clatter. The manuals state that you should not lower the valve clearances to quiet the lifters but I have to say the engine was a lot quieter (although there were other problems including low oil pressure and smoking) before the re-build. My rebuilder stated that the valves were adjusted much closer than the spec. requirements when he opened it up. He insists that the specifications should be adhered to and that you shouldn't cheat to quiet the clatter. he stated that these old engines made a lot of valve noise and that I just needed to accept it. Since the engine was quieter before the re-build and ran well, would I be in trouble if I tightened up on the .007 Exh and 004 Int specs. If so how far could I lower the gap without causing problems. If any of the readers of this post have experience with clatter or valve spacing I would be grateful for your thoughts. Thanks, Dick
  21. I GOTTA TRY THIS ON MY 32 ROCKNE. FOUND A PULLER AS ILLUSTRATED AT A LOCAL RENTAL STORE. 20 BUCKS FOR THE DAY, AND A BIG HAMMER, WILL GIVE IT A GO!!! DICK
  22. OK so I need to inspect the brakes on the rear of my 32 Rockne 75 (I'm done with the fronts.) I have a big 3 prong puller grabing onto the groove in the hub with the point of the puller in the tapered hole in the end of the axle (yes the axle nut has been removed) I have the puller as tight as I can get it with a 16" breaker bar and I have hammered on the end of the puller screw with a 2 lb mallet. The mallet just bounces off the screw and the wheel does not budge. Am I doing something wrong or do I need a bigger hammer? Rockne 75 and the Dictator share the same construction, I think. Dick
