1. Thanks you Ivan, great info. The picture is off a gear drive off another car, It was easier to post that then to get my car out, etc. Mine has the large ring gear, but is missing the cable drive and beyond. Chuck Richardson (from this site) also turned me onto a pretty neat site Antique Speedometers I figured as much, but you guys would certianly know more then me and my "ass"umptions! Thanks Scott
2. Hello again! Our 1912 Paige has this same ring gear on the right front wheel (the mating gear is missing). While the obvious and perhaps correct answer is that it drives a speedo, we were told it tied into the Prestolite sytem for the head lamps. The car doesn't seem to be "missing" a speedo in terms of a mounting place. No where in any documentation does the car advertise any instrumentation. Any and all input welcome. Thanks, Scott
3. Brad, Thank you for the wealth of information. Actually down loaded a digital version of the Dykes manual (expired copywright, posted on google books) and have been reading through it. Really something else!! Gonna order Mr. Sharon's book tommorrw, and really looking forward to reading it. Started working on the car this morning with HIGH aspirations, thinking I'd have it running by days end. Ha. Stuck exhuast valves, cracked intake, weak spark. I got my work cut out for me. Can you recommend a shop that can refurbish a DU4, charge the magnets, etc. Looking forward to spending some money at Restoration Stuff, what a great catalog, several must haves. Awesome tip on the Acetylene lights, we where totaly stumped on what to do. Mechanics first, cosmetics later, I'll hit you up for info on the top at a later date. I will end up joining both the AACA and HCCA as I'm sure both clubs have lots to offer. I apllaude the members here, as they have gone out of their way to help me out. What's funny is, the car is generally speaking soooo basic, but yet so foreign...it really is comical. Cheers! Scott
4. Thank you for great info Chuck. The car doesn't have a battery. Strictly hand start. As long as I keep the plugs or plug wires grounded, any problem with turning the motor over, plugs removed, to check for spark? Do I start the car in full retard or 1/3 off full retard?? Once running, do I just adjust to keep the motor "quiet" if you will. where typically does the timing like to be in relation to the throttle, or is it kinda seat of the pants...A noisey motor is an unhappy motor. Thanks again for a very informative post.
5. Hey Jerry, thanks for the input. We are going to try and get the car running this weekend. It ran when it was parked, 10 yrs ago. Wish me luck. Got myself a Dykes Encyclopedia and have been reading my way through it. I'm trying to wrap my arms around the ignition/magneto, as it is seems to be my biggest obstacle. Is that considered a "high tension magneto", do you know?? The car came with a huge file, with history of ownership back to the 50's. Really cool. Copies of original sales lit. etc, but no owners manual, so I will do as you suggest. Dykes has great info, but something more specific would be great. Do you spend any time over at HCCA?? I have a post over there, with some 75 views and not one response. I see a lot of posts go unanswered. People aren't near as friendly or helpful as they are here...maybe I have to give 'm the 40 bucks for a membership to get any love.... Thanks again, Scott
6. Fudd, you hit the nail on the head. Looking to do a clean restore and really enjoy the thing. Thanks!!!
7. Ordered my Dykes, thanks for the responses thus far. Posted pics...
8. originally posted as a 1911 Beverly, just got the file and turns out it is a 1912 Paige Brunswick. Hello to all, new to the boards and cars of this era. Need some advice from those in the know, cause God knows i'm not. I have an oppurtunity to restore a 1912 Paige Brunswick that has been in the family for some time. from what I understand, the car was previously owned by Harrahs, and restoration was say 80% complete. From what I can tell the car is very original, and in suprisingly good condition. It is missing the calcium carbide tank and generator, needs new teak running boards, the fenders are all bare and need refinishing, the seats have all original leather in great shape, but the stitching is giving way in places. It supposedly is in good running condition, w/ good running gear, wheels, new tires etc. and the canvas top is torn, but complete...From what I gather, there isn't much out there on Paige cars of this era, but any info you folks can provide would be awesome. The car really is is in great condition for it's age, and I'm excited to have an oppurtunity to revive a bit of history. So to my questions, and ANY help is greatly appreciate... What literature do you recommend I get to get up to speed on the brass era cars, the operational theroy of the vehicle, and how to restore it and retain what value (little from what I gather) it does have? While I'm very mechanical by nature, I understand and apprecaite the art of a proper restoration and don't want to go off half cocked here. I'm savoy on the mechanics and repair of modern day bikes and cars, but this one's got me a little stumped...adjustable magneto, hand crank, and a carb that looks like anything but. As briefly (or not ) as you can, how do ya start the thing, do's and don't, how to drive it, etc. Is the acetylene lighting system replaceable, NOS or reproduction stuff, or do you convert the head lamps to work some other way? We are willing to spend the money to have a proper top put on th car. Is there a Southern California shop that would be up to the task? A good source(s) for parts and service related items. I have been all over the web, and can't assertain the value of the car in any condition. I believe the car was purchased for 18k some 10 years ago. I don't want to put 50K into a 20K car, but am willing to put 20K into a 20K dollar car. I want to do the car right, and I want to drive it on an occasional Sunday w/ the family. No shows, etc, but I don't want to detract from the value of the car either. Any financial input would be appreciated as well. Looking forward to all your collective wisdom! Regards,
