  1. Agree- Living here in New Orleans, Louisiana - our state postal abbreviation is LA Los Angeles "Should" be abbreviated L.A. but the two are often mistaken in print. Some don't seem to care, others will never bother to learn
  2. Containers can hide a lot of stuff while appearing very ordinary with common goods
  3. Beyond the Gilmore, If you have the time, drive to Mackinac City via Traverse City and Petoskey, and drive the "Tunnel of Trees along the Lake Michigan shoreline - and take the boat to Mackinac Island for a nice day trip. Drive the "Big Mac" Mackinac Bridge and go to the UP and Sault Ste. Marie, a longer drive, but worth it in my opinion. If heading south toward Ft Wayne, then visit the Auburn, Indiana museums Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum National Automotive & Truck Museum Early Ford V-8 Foundation Museum
  4. Move the shift lever to neutral- release the clutch pedal- depress the clutch pedal again- shift to the other gear and release the clutch pedal (while approximating the newly-required engine RPMs) Thanks Robin, and good to know the brakes on your Roadie work well 😎
  5. There was an article about the Brubaker Box, many, many years ago in one of the sports car related magazines, and it was very complementary. These seemed to be the genesis for what eventually became the mini-van.
  6. Oh, I think we all got the Gist of it, and NO, I don't believe it was a real ad
  7. While I don't know of substantiating data, my personal experience with radial tires over the most recent 62 years has involved approximately 9 or 10 tread separations, maybe more, and most also involving blowout prior to being able to exit the traffic lane. Usually the tires were 4 to 5 years of age, but some were not as old. Typically the steel belt is the issue, creats imbalance, and quickly advances. There are times when I've detected slight imbalance in time to replace a wheel/tire combination in time. I've also had significant body damage to vehicle and trailer due to the belt-tread separation. I've never experienced this , even with ancient Bias-Ply tires , even at speeds I should not have driven.
  8. As a temporary measure, and until the issue is resolved, your friend could "Double Clutch", not really a Lost Art. Many of us here could step them through the procedure if needed.
  9. Or -- Paint the fenders to match the body Keep the Whitewalls, Keep the cover over the Sparkplugs as designed, The chromed Trumpet Horns are mounted upside down, Car would likely be improved with dual pinstripes, maybe cream and red, or another shade of blue Leave the gun, Take the Cannoli Nice car
  10. In addition to the functional phone, I appreciate the message recording device installed provided just below the phone ! although the black and white plastic inking device seems rather modern by comparison
  11. I know how to read a roadmap, and learned to do that prior to starting a trip - and still am capable. I choose not to use the GPS built into my 2006 Avalanche. None of our other "modern" or vintage vehicles have GPS built in to become obsolete. I decry the very idea of having to look at a tiny cell phone screen for navigation- however my large screen Garmin, mounted just below and to the right of eyesight is great at advising turns, lane changes, school zones, traffic cams, and related items. It gets updated regularly without additional charge so I use it when I feel it will be of benefit - especially if in an unfamiliar area. It hasn't ever let me down. PS: My Garmin also covers our travels across Canada, and also includes Mexico, although we've not traveled as much there of late.

  13. One of the reasons I ordered my then-new 2002 Suburban 2500 was for the functions of the ON-STAR system. A few years later they "Upgraded" and my early (analog?) ON-STAR no longer functioned, and there was absolutely no path to "Upgrade" to the (Digital?) current version ! Thankfully our 2006 Avalanche has the 2-G ON-STAR system which currently is supported - but apparently only until this coming December? GM / ON-STAR "Claims" they are "Working Toward A Solution ! My Solution WILL NOT be that of buying a new replacement vehicle, which I assume would be their answer . While ON-STAR is a convenience, I got along without it for many, many years, and could surely do so for the future!
  14. I saw this car when Phil was still driving his cars every day- Fantastic - in fact the entire collection was nothing short of amazing ! Rows of '41s, '59s, etc
  15. Saw a rerun of the film "Fiddler on the Roof" recently - Perchik The Teacher/Radical (Paul Michael Glazer) who pursues the 2nd daughter and is eventually arrested and sent to Siberia, tells Tevye the impoverished milkman raising 5 daughters, that "Wealth is a Curse". Tevye responds "May I be Smitten - And, May I Never Recover!"
  16. I agree that the first choice would be to rebuild the nailhead, first used in 1953 models, other than the 40 Series Special which still used the smaller straight Eight
  17. Depending upon how much wear the 216 has endured, Rotella 15W-50 could be a decent alternative, Flowing cold as a 15 weight, but with the supposed hot protection of a 50 weight. I've used it in my early cars, even 'though they might not need the zinc
  18. My understanding is that, per BaT, the 5% only applies per the sale. And if you are the Winning bidder and don't complete the purchase, you are then permanently banned, unless there are extenuating circumstances such as serious incorrect description.
  19. I likely would have stayed with the Chevy, just sayin'
  20. As a reminder of my youth, I still enjoy the "Idea" of the Continental Kit, but as a modern day realist, and driving our 1954 Cadillac convertible cross-country, I guess I'm better off not having the additional length - especially with respect to currently available garage space. I would have to remove my work bench for our Caddy to fit if I were to add a Continental Kit. In defense of the series, we absolutely love just looking at our 1954 Cadillac convertible, almost as much as we enjoy driving it. Everyone who sees it, while we drive, park, show, tour, or just go out for ice cream, seems to appreciate it as well. A true '50s "Queen of the Hop"! The advertised car seems a very nice example, moderately priced, well maintained, and apparently in good condition- A no-brainer for those who treasure elegance, beauty, maintainability, comfort, style, aand don't mind being the center of attention. Oh, and the actual Craigslist ad notes the price as ASKING 69,000 FOR THE CAR (OR MAKE OFFER)
  21. Our Oakland Owners Club, International (OOCI), while relatively modest in numbers of membership, is still active and supportive, and publishes a quality newsletter. I've been a member since 1997, and even though I no longer have our 1912 Oakland Model 30 Touring, will continue to support the club. 22. Have you considered modifying the seat back and the seat cushion, maybe reducing the padding? A tall friend had a similar issue driving our 1927 Chevy roadster
  23. Maybe the chains also work in the sand? Far northern Arizona could have seen snow up in the mountains?
