  1. Ben: I hope easier than Tues., on the road to Lisle, this year. Saw signs that said outside temp was 97 which makes inside car temp at least 115 or more. Usually run with temp gauge between 180-190 on hot days but my temp gauge was almost 210. So hot that I had to let car cool down after stopping for gas (which my 29 roadster does often) as starter wouldn't turn engine over. Marlene was NOT a happy camper and told me, once again, that was her last car meet, riding there, in the car with me. Bill McLaughlin 1929 McLaughlin Buick Roadster 1929 Silver Anniversary Buick Club
  2. I asked my wife, Marlene to take a pic of me when I received my award. This is what she took. Does she think I’m in the witness protection program or what …,,

  7. Jon: No argument from me. You are the carb expert. I’m just a dedicated 29 McL-Buick driver. Looking at your possibilities, I’d say that my occasional “vapor lock” is in my mechanical fuel pump, as you suggest. The nice thing is that the electric pump corrects it almost instantly. Thanks for your help. Bill McLaughlin 1929 Silver Anniversary Buick Newsletter 1929 McLaughlin Buick Roadster
  8. Tom: I have experienced whatever it's called (I call it vapor lock) when the car ceases running as the gas presumably vaporizes in the pig-tail between the fuel pump and carb, in my 29 McL-Buick. This happens when it's very hot (90+ or more) and I've been traveling at close to 60MPH for extended periods on black asphalt hwys. (long stretches of lighter coloured cement hwys. lower running temp. by about 5 degrees). I can actually feel the car starting to seize-up - generally when climbing long hills. To correct the problem, I flip on a low-pressure (2-4 lb) electric fuel pump which pushes gas into the carb. Like 32Buick67, I have also replaced the copper pig-tail line which screws into both fuel pump and carb with a rubber hose that slides on and off appropriate fittings on both. Saves on damaging the screw fittings and is a whole lot quicker to get off and particularly back on. Bill McLaughlin 1929 Silver Anniversary Buick Newsletter 1929 McLaughlin Buick Roadster
  9. I believe the shock absorber belting is called “transmission belting”. It is used to connect a tractor’s power take-off to a farm implement, several feet away. Try at a farm implement / tractor supply outlet. I also think that Bob’s Automobile may also sell it cut to length. 10. John: The original 29 Buick cap is a one-off aluminum cap which is reasonably difficult to find. Bob Sheppard, in Australia, makes a repro out of stainless steel, which Bob’s Automobilia generally has for sale. There are generic caps that fit - I used one for several years before I found an original one. Measure outside of fuel filler pipe and inside where the tangs lock into place and then ask at an auto parts store, wrecking years or look for something that will fit at a flea market. 12. Hello: These articles were in my last 2 Newsletters. GAS CAP: Gary Hertzler (26S) writes: "As a result of a stupid move on my part, I lost my gas cap on the way to an AACA meet. Do you have any pictures or better yet a drawing of the 29 Buick gas cap. I have a lathe and a big bar of aluminum and was thinking of turning one out.” I sent Gary some photos & measurements and he sent me pictures of what he made. Looks good ! Gary Hertzler’s reproduced gas cap REPRO GAS CAP COMMENT: Vaughn Gunthorpe (44X) writes: “I read where one of the members lost the fuel tank cap for his 29. Rather than make one out of alloy, may I suggest he machine it out of Stainless Steel and have it polished or brass’ed and have it chromed. What I have done with mine is buy some stainless chain (delicate) and fasten it to the underside of the cap. The chain falls down, inside the filler spout, where a stainless threaded screw and nut fastens it to the inside of the spout. While it can still be stolen, it will not fall off and be lost. I also replaced the locking lug with a much heavier, high tensile, spring steel tang so that it securely locks in place. As you can see the chain is fastened to the inside base of the cap. I drilled and tapped it taking care not to go right through but leaving enough room for the thread to hold the screw very firmly. The screw is bottomed out on the thread and is locked tight”. 16. I bought a basic 2 cup holder ( from Amazon, I think) and glued some leatherette around a small piece of wood and onto the rear and base. The piece of wood slides down between seat back and cushion and keeps the holder firmly on the seat. Also, easy to move between cars. Bill McLaughlin 1929 McL-Buick Roadster

  22. First, I’d advise on calling it a 1930 Marquette. There was never a 1929 Marquette. Bill McLaughlin 1929 Silver Anniversary Buick Club
  23. I experienced two carb fire and luckily managed to put them out. I now carry a small and a large extinguisher in my 29 McL-Buick. And, have 2 big ones at both sides of the garage door + a fire blanket. Stay safe ! Bill McLaughlin
  24. 20W-50 (detergent oil) in my 29 Buick and 37 Cord because I drive them, usually on hot summer days on long road trips. Bill McLaughlin
  25. I'd worry that if one rod bearing has gone the others aren't far behind. If it was Spring and you wanted to keep driving through the season doing one might work. But, it's Fall and you likely will put the firetruck away for the winter. Why not do them all now so it won't be off the road again. Just my 1&1/2 cents worth (that 2 Canadian cents in $US).
