Well the city of Detroit is finally starting to tear down the old, giant Packard plant . They talk about it as if it is the biggest eyesore in the world rather than a historic place some of us will be sad to see go. There has got to be some part that is worthwhile to save.

Milestone for "edinmass" Today on the Forum
nickelroadster replied to 34LaSalleClubSedan's topic in General Discussion
We should all remember that if Ed stopped coming here, the forum would almost dry up and blow away! At least a lot of us are quite a bit older than him and we will probably go belly up before he does. -
WTB Teens - Early 20's Oldsmobile hood latch - FOUND
nickelroadster replied to Stude Light's topic in Parts Wanted
I have some of these that I had remade in brass. They will need to be threaded and nickel plated. How many do you need? The barrels, base and spring system I just made from scratch. -
I would rather pay a little more and have things done well. I don't look for the cheapest price.

I have had very good luck with Jesser's classic keys. 330-376-8181 in Akron Ohio. At Hershey every year and I have used him several times.

It looks like you have as much fun with your machine tools as you do the cars! I am a little jealous.

How do people find parts for obscure vintage cars.
nickelroadster replied to TheCatOfAges's topic in General Discussion
I have one of the 1915 Oldsmobiles that you speak of. All the things that others have said apply and the search for parts is half the fun. Cars from the teens are not as complicated in many ways and you just have to learn about making parts. Engines are the easiest as there are many places to get engine parts made. I once looked for three years to get a hubcap. -
Broken water pump in 1913/14 Cartercar Model 7
nickelroadster replied to clheddier's topic in Technical
Shoot us some pics. If you have to make a new shaft just realize that every measurement is critical. The housing could be fixed as there is no stress to speak of on it. Don't try to replace the water pump as the shaft turns the distributor. -

I don't remember if I told you about my saga with my water pump which is exactly the same as the one on the Carter car. Cheddier, I will be happy to go into more detail with you if you like. -

The water pump is not that complicated it self. The best thing to do is to find someone who will install modern seals in that one. Yes Ed unfortunately I am speaking from experience and not all of it good. I met your Pierce Arrow pal Grimy when I flew out to California to sue the guy who screwed mine up. Grimy did give me a personal tour of his somewhat different collection -

The water pump shaft is quite complicated and I would avoid turning a new one if possible. If you do have to make a new one just remember that there are many places where measurements have to be exact. -

You don't have to remove the starter generator. What you have to do is to remove the front timing cover to access a nut that holds the shaft in. If you remove the oldham coupling you will not need to remove the starter-generator. You will need to take the starter crank setup off and move the radiator forward. If you just do what you need to to remove the timing cover most should be pretty evident although it takes a long time just to remove a water pump. -

So Dave, You used new material to make those axles? I just got some truck axles out of a junk yard and cut them down for my fifteen Olds. I expect any way you do it will make better than original ones.
