  1. Some additional information. The starter grounds through the output wire of the generator. When the generator begins putting out current, the ground for the starter is lost and the start stops running.
  2. Don't sell yourself short. There are many high dollar Chevrolet restorations going on.
  3. In the pre-turn signal days, my grandfather would say he couldn't remember what signal was what, so he just stuck his arm out the window. Know wonder he wrecked every car he owned.
  4. I think you will do better listing the steering wheels separately. The person or restoration shop interested in one may not have a need for the other and will want to offer minimal dollars for the one they don't need.
  5. Both steering wheels appear to be in excellent condition. The first steering wheel is the 1950-52 Chevrolet deluxe (optional) steering wheel and the second one is a 1947-53 Chevrolet truck steering wheel. A quick EBay search shows and equal quality 1950-52 Deluxe wheel for $2250, buy it now. This is not out of line because it would cost around $1800 to recast an original steering wheel plus the cost to replate the horn ring. The downside is that this steering wheel is being reproduced and selling for $350. The truck steering wheel is also reproduced and selling for $270. The cost to recast the truck steering wheel would also be around $1800. Search EBay and other sources and you can see the range these steering wheels are selling for.
  6. It really depends on the title laws and the manufacturer. Packard for many years referred to their cars by series numbers rather than years. Through the 1950's Mercedes were titled in the year sold. Some areas titled cars in the year sold as well. The Ford Mustang was introduced in April 1964 as 1965 models.
  7. I was wrong....No Grand National in Puerto Rico in 2024 only a National.
  8. The 2024 Grand Nationals will be in Puerto Rico and Charlotte. Charlotte will be a dual National with the Grand National on Friday and the National on Saturday. Correction: Puerto Rico is only a National in 2024. Sorry for the confusion.
  9. Your exhaust would not exclude you from the HPOF class but would be a deduction. You're permitted up to 6 deductions to qualify for the HPOF badge.
  10. The correct tire size for the Champion is 6.40x15. The larger Commander and Land Cruiser used the 7.10x15 tire. Mount one and see if it fits. Check that the tire fits both the front and rear as well as the spare tire well in the trunk. As the Champion is the smaller body built by Studebaker you may find that you don't have clearance to mount the rear tires because of narrow rear wheel wells for the smaller tires. The same for the spare tire well.
  11. Simply hook the power leads to a 12V battery. That's all you need to do. Of course the distributor lead still goes to your distributor or coil on the car you are testing.
  12. The OP has not been back here since his original post. He included an email for anyone to respond. Let's show him our AACA support of his effort.
  13. The electric solenoid on the vacuum valve latches and unlatches the push rod. I would reassemble the unit, replace it on the car and then test.
  14. Have you tried applying vacuum to it? Just a guess, but I wonder if there is an internal lock of some sort inside the vacuum valve that prevents the shaft from moving until vacuum is supplied. From memory, I believe vacuum pulls the pin in.
  15. Many thanks to all the region members who made this meet possible. Lots of hard work by them to produce such a great event.
  16. The first time a car is shown in the HPOF class, which permits up to 6 deductions to receive HPOF Certification. The next time the car is shown, it is evaluated for the higher level HPOF Original Certification which only permits up to 2 deductions. These deductions are for 1960 and newer cars. Older cars are permitted a few more deductions. If the car does not receive the higher level HPOF Original status, but still qualifies for the HPOF level, then it will receive a HPOF Repeat award and will continue to be evaluated at the HPOF level at future Nationals. The car can also receive Repeat Original HPOF awards as long as it does not exceed two deductions. If a HPOF Original certified car receives more than two deductions, it will receive the Repeat HPOF award and return to the HPOF level for future Nationals.
  17. Dad on the left with his best friend and Dad's first car...1936 Ford in the North Carolina mountains about 1941-42.
  18. If this blower motor will fit in every respect except that it is a single speed motor you can add a resistor to the low speed circuit wire to give you two speeds. You can join the two power feed wires after the resistor to a single wire to attach to the new style motor. With single speed blower motors, direct 12v power input gives you the highest blower speed. To lower the blower speed, the power is directed through a voltage resistor or multiple resistors to further reduce the speed. Many cars with manual blower speed controls used this setup from the factory. Here is an example: Blower Motor Resistor ECH BR85 | Buy Online - NAPA Auto Parts (napaonline.com) Just search NAPA for "blower motor resistor". This one just happens to be for 1989 Dodge Dakota. You should look for one with an outside case though.
  19. Rusty is correct on where the fluid fills are on the prewar vacamatic transmissions are. The main change in these transmissions is that the 1941-42 versions, vacuum was used to control the shift while post war versions used hydraulic pressure. Driving them is the same procedure. All 1941 and the early production 1942 Vacamatic transmissions used a vacuum diaphragm to control the shift. The later 1942 models used a vacuum valve. On the 1941 version with the vacuum diaphragm, there is no vacuum supplied to the diaphragm in the first and third gear ranges. When the governor calls for the shift, vacuum is applied to the vacuum unit, pushing a rod out that shifts the gears. With the system not upshifting, I would suspect a vacuum problem or the governor points needing cleaning. If you remove the front carpet or mat, you will see a large plate covering most of the floor that can be unbolted to give access to these transmission components. You can test drive the car with this cover removed. I would clean the points first (just rub a piece of paper between them, they are silver and soft). If the transmission still will not upshift look at the vacuum system. Either you don't have vacuum to the system (broken, missing hose) or the diaphragm is bad. Either way, no vacuum = no shift. Andy Bernbaum was reproducing the vacuum diaphragms a few years ago, so hopefully they are still available. The 1941 Chrysler shop manual gives excellent information on diagnosing problems with these transmissions.
  20. You should consider looking at the US and German web sites for Glasurit and BASF paints as both are available in the US. Most foreign based cars sold in the US have used Glasurit paint for years. You should also contact your local Glasurit or BASF automotive paint store for guidance in the names used for their products in the US and in Europe. You should find that they are the same products, just different names for different markets.
  21. This looks like the inside rear view mirror which mounts to the windshield header. It appears to be Ford.
  22. Class 35 is for Limited Production, Prototype & Experimental Vehicles. To be included in the class, each vehicle must be reviewed and accepted by the AACA National Specified Class Committee, approved by the VP of Judging and finally approved by the AACA National Board of Directors. A list of the approved vehicles is published in the Judges Manual. In this case, the car is a 1986 Buick LeSabre Grand National w/ WE2 package.
  23. You will also have a large vacuum hose from the intake to the power brake booster.
  24. It's great that you are trying to help your friend's grandson. The heater system on these cars is all cable linkage with no vacuum. The only vacuum line I can think of that goes into the dash could be the connection for the washer system. Do him a great favor and buy him a factory service manual if he doesn't have one and spend the time to make a trip over to show him how to use it. This will endear you to him more than you can imagine. Introduce him to AACA and encourage him to join and show him the Forum and well as the Facebook page. Give him the tools to grow in the hobby.
