  1. I am assuming that the switch being referred to is the switch on the dash? Leif, you seem to have pictures of pretty everything on the 23 4 cylinders, would you happen to have pictures of the mentioned switches?
  2. Mark, I am not quite at THAT point yet, just want to see if the starter is in working order. I have heavily lubricated everything underneath and loaded the cylinders up with penetrating oil as you suggested, and will be putting the oil pan back on this weekend. Larry, I think this is what I am looking for. At this point, with the battery hooked up and the ignition in the on position, I hear nothing when I push down on the starter pedal. What and where am I looking for the combination switch/multi-contact switch? I am hoping for the "rattlesnake" or Buzzing" sound soon. Thanks, Dave
  3. I am not trying to START my 23 yet, but want to check the floor starter. My crank pin is broken, and the engine is not frozen. I reassembled the foot starter (Leif, your pictures helped greatly, thanks) and checked the electrical. Hooked up the 6 volt battery and have power to all lights, dash, the brake and horn. What should I expect when I step on the starter? 1- turned the ignition on and the amps go to 12 2- step on the starter and it drops to 2 3- no other sounds, no movement Whats my next move?
  4. Needed to find a period correct radiator hose for my 23-4-39 and was referred via AAC to The Restoration Supply Company in Escondido CA. As luck would have it, it was only about 30 minutes from my house. What a great little place! Met Bob, and was quite insightful and helpful to my needs and hooked me up with my 2 feet of red hose. He also gave me the name of a local shop that could help me with the mechanical s of my car- also only about 20 minutes away from my house. Who knew? I give them my BCA sign of approval. Anyway, check them out- Restoration Supply Company
  5. I'm heading over there Friday afternoon- can I check anything for you?
  6. Also- these guys are only about 20 miles from me!
  7. Thanks for the link- red hand wrapped hose for both top and bottom would be correct?
  8. Any recommendations on what to use or where to find period correct radiator hoses for my 23-4-39?
  9. Starting with the radiator. Removed the old hoses- any suggestions on where to get period correct replacement hoses? Check out the picture of the scratched black paint on the radiator shell- is that a hint of nickle back there? Will start the lubrication process this week end prior to putting the pan back on. 10. Leif, here is another view of my where the foot starter goes. I will use your instructions to reinstall this weekend
  11. Leif- Very good pictures and instructions. Thank you, I will attempt and let you know how I progress.
  12. Leif- the broken crank pin is where I left it a few years back. I have never "started" the Buick, just rolled it to unfreeze the engine. I did take the floor foot starter apart for some reason- If I recall it did have tension when I took it apart. Any suggestions on how to put it back properly?
  13. Mark- Ok, that's my start off point, my weekend project will start with your suggestions. As for the exhaust in the trunk, that is a spare. Everything else is complete.
  14. Was real hard to walk past it all covered in junk over the past years. Time to get it going. Now where the heck do I start? SEVERAL years ago the pan was dropped, the spark plugs were removed and the engine was "unstuck". It was found that the crank handle shaft was broken just inside the crank hole. You can see from the one of the pictures, I took the starter foot pedal out too- (it escapes as to why now). The radiator was removed and checked for leaks (all good), but now I'll need hoses. THAT gentleman is the extent of the restoration since 2006! Do you recommend putting the oil pan back on 1st (I have the replacement gasket)? I am a novice mechanic at BEST. Leif you gave some great insight a few years back with your 23. Anymore would be appreciated. Mark- well I'd be fool to turn down such a nice gesture. Let me know what I need to do to prepare for launch!
  15. I purchased this 23-4-39 almost 6 years ago from the original family. With the greatest of intentions. Here it sits. Saturday, I received a random call from Dave Ebert another Pre-War BCA member inquiring about my car. We both own this rare Buick, and he was asking about my progress from years past. Well this lit a fire under me, and today I "unearthed" the beauty again! Not in bad shape for an 89 year old car! Original engine and trani in tact. Not running, but the engine does turn, lights and horn work too! The resurrection has begun! Click on the links below (or copy and paste it) for some pictures taken today 04/30/12. I will do my best to do her justice and to get'r going. I will post updates and pictures as they happen. 16. Just purchased, and about to dive into the restore on this. I was told that I have a 421 engine. How can I tell for sure?
  17. Hi Stuart, I have the engine supported by a floor jack. You are quite right, the crank shaft either hits the crank hole at the front of the body picture 9, or the the gear cover plate just barley hits the rear of the support frame just behind the radiator- picture 6. There ies my quandary. Rod, I thought about the rear engine mounts as well- but am hoping for someones magic cure before attempting that. If all else fails, I will leave it as is and hope to not use the front hand crank- easy way out!
  18. Leif, again, another Buick gem from you. I was looking through the BCA judging guide you posted and noticed that it lists the 23-39's color as Premier Green? Thought they were Maroon?
  19. First of all thanks to Leif from Sweden and Leon from Canada for you expert advice! Worked on fixing the broken crank pin today, proved to harder than anticipated. Pulled the radiator (see pictures), found the original hoses not cooperative and they had to be sacrificed. (note the rust in the hoses). Tried my darndest to get the front gear cover removed, and just could not get it off. The crank shaft either hangs up on the crank hole part of the front frame (see picture), or the plate cover hangs up on the frame closest to the engine (see picture). I've jacked the engine up and down, and just can not find the sweet spot where I can pull the over off. It has to be something simple, that I'm just not seeing. Everything up to this point was quite smooth. I need fresh eyes, let me know if you see anything that I missed. I have to get behind that plate to see if I can fix the pin at the end of the crank shaft. Until next week, Dave
  20. Not sure if 10G's is a good price or not for a nonrunning 1917. Like I said, exterior is very dirty, but straight and rust free. Engine seemed to be intact, and like he stated, he does have boxes and boxes of spare parts, but there is no floor or interior. He is not kidding about 2 days to dig it out. It may be easier to open the roof and lift it out if you ask me. The barn is PACKED with various odds, ends and antiques. It's quite unfortunate that he can't offer pictures or that the other 17 is not for sale, because it sure hasn't been moved or touched in years- decades, kind of a waste. But seems like 'ol Bill has some issues with letting go of his possessions. Guess it was worth a phone call though, maybe another local member will be up that way- San Jose and check it out and give it a good home. Dave
  21. Let us know what you find out, post pictures if he is able to send you any
  22. He was selling them individually but mentioned he was open to a package deal His name is Bill, and they are all in his very "well packed" warehouse. One of my concerns would be- how the heck he would get them out? There are tons of antique furniture as well as other cars in his barn. But the Buicks are a good find, and surly worth the effort to someone. Give him a call, ask him to take pictures. Again, I was without a camera. Bill 831-801-7375. Tell him you heard about them from Dave via the antique Buick site.
  23. Interesting find today! While researching parts for my 23-4-39, I came across a guy selling the following Buicks: Wish I had my camera, and it was not light enough in the barn for my cellphone, so sorry no pictures 1917 D44 Roadster/Runabout. Engine# 287289 presented as original, complete and with spare parts. Frame tag #289436- no rust! Exterior in great shape and original. No interior floor boards or instruments, but dash is in tact. Been sitting for a long time in dry storage- uncovered, so very dirty. 1917 D45, could not get to the engine, but visually the best and most complete of the lot. 1923-6-41, engine# 987170- apart but boxes labeled with all parts. Frame# 945855. Fenders removed from car but are all there. Wood spoked wheels in good shape, but no tires- sitting on floor jacks. No rust, but again- quite dirty sitting in dry storage uncovered. Interior is all there, and in quite good shape, no rips or tears even in the headliner. Has 3 rollup shades, which all work (material in various stages of distress though). Interior fabric is of a red volour (original?). He also has many spare parts for this as well. As much as I would love to take on another project, I can't do it. Anyone interested? All 3 would be great projects, none are running. I found them in a little town just south of San Francisco called San Juan Bautista. Dave
