  1. So are you suggesting a multi grade such as 5w - 30 would probably be suitable? thanks wayne
  2. An update, of where I am at with the brakes on my 26 roadster. A couple of weeks ago I had the shoes on the front and the bands on the rear relined. The company that did the work bonded a soft material to shoes/bands and they tell me that this should help with the brake grabbing issue. I have reassembled everything and set up the bands as in the manual, they do seem better than before and I am sure that once bedded in they will be better than ever before in my ownership. As in my other post I am now trying to alter things so that the pump pushes the operating pistons out at a more responsive speed. Currently it takes about 1 - 2 seconds for the front brakes to work after pressure is applied to the pedal, I am thinking a thinner oil maybe needed as I currently have SAE 30 engine oil in the transmission, as suggested in the Studebaker workshop manual. Any suggestions of a suitable oil would be great. Once the front brakes work, they really do stop the car quickly, but it seems that they are either on or off, it is hard to get gradual pressure to the front brakes, this maybe a feature of the brakes, or it maybe that I don't have the pivot quite right on the operating lever I made up, as the original was missing. This maybe a bit of trial and error with the pivot, or just something that I will get used to. Regards Wayne
  3. Ken, I am in the UK where currently it is about 7C or or 43F however it acted the same in the summer when it was warmer. I have spoken with a specialist oil company here in the UK and they were meant to get back to me, with a recommendation, but I have rang a couple of times and they don't return the call, hence why posting on here. The company do a SAE10, they also do a ISO46 the guy I spoke with said he would do some research and let me know the best option. A fellow Studebaker friend suggested trying an Automatic Transmission Fluid, Im not sure if that is a good idea or not, someone else mentioned using a thin hydraulic oil. The link you mention above is from when I initially started playing with the brakes. I suppose I would have been better continuing with that thread rather than starting a new post, but I wanted to put the title with my new question. I will update the previous thread with where I am at with the braves. Regards Wayne
  4. I have a 1926 standard 6 with the accessory 4 wheel braking system. When I purchased the car the pump in the gearbox had been bypassed, I have since returned it to operational condition, however it is slow to act. In the workshop manual it states use a "medium engine oil in the transmission of cars with hydraulic brake equipment in warm weather and a light, cold-test oil in cold weather" I am not sure what is meant by a Cold test oil. I have used SAE 30 engine oil, and when the brake pedal is applied it takes about 2 seconds for the brake piston to extend, and apply the brakes. Once applied the brakes pull up well. What grade oil would anyone suggest I try to make the hydraulics more responsive? Any suggestions greatly received. Regards Wayne
  5. I have a 1926 Standard 6 with the optional 4 wheels brakes. Does anyone know the thickness the linings should be for the front brakes, these are the internal aluminium shoes. Also what thickness lining should I have fitted to the external contracting bands fitted to the rears? Thanks in advance Wayne
  6. I have put my 1926 Studebaker in to Auction next weekend, the 22nd October. see http://richardedmondsauctions.com/catalogue-new/?lot=1967 The car is in the UK, was imported from California in 2013. Regards Wayne
  7. Flack master did you sell your rack? If not can you let me know. Thanks
  8. Does anyone on here know if the head gasket for a 1926 Standard 6 is the same as the one for a 1928 GE dictator? Any help appreciated. Wayne
  9. Was this switch for sale? And if so is it still available? I have a 1928 Studebaker and need a switch similar to this for the headlights. Thanks Wayne
  10. Im looking for an ashtray, that is fitted into the rear door interior panel. I have a 1928 dictator but am sure it would be the same. Do you have one? Regards Wayne
  11. Thanks for that, Colin lives a couple of streets from me, in Chipping Sodbury, and is a good friend, but he doesn't have anything. Thanks for the suggestion. Wayne
  12. Do you have any late 1920's studebaker rear lights? I am also in the UK Wayne
  13. My 1926 has Wagner electrical equipment and doesn't have any advance lever on the column. My 1928 and 1930 cars both have Delco and they do have the advance lever. Wayne
  14. I am looking to refinish the wooden wheels on my 1932 F32 Oldsmobile patrician, my question is how do I remove the chrome ring that goes around the wheel rim. I don't want to butcher them so thought it best to ask first. Today I removed one tyre (tire) expecting to find some sort of fastener but nothing, so I assume they are held on with some sort of spring clip? Any help appreciated, and even better if someone has a photo. Regards Wayne
  15. I have listed my pair of Edmund Jones type 20 headlights on eBay. see http://www.ebay.com/itm/161541531992?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 These, I fitted to my 1926 Studebaker roadster, but I have now changed it back to the original lights. I can ship worldwide from the UK please ask and I can tell you how much shipping will be. I am not one of the scammers you find on eBay especially from overseas, checkout my 1400 feedbacks and posts on here. Wayne Smith
  16. Wouldn't this be a cool car, to just get running, do the necessary brakes wiring etc and then use it as is, just because you can!!! Would love it but would need to sell one of the kids!! Wayne
  17. Can you please send me the pics, my email is waynesmith78 at hotmail.com Thanks Wayne
  18. Peter, recently I have been having the same learning curve. Over here in the UK I recently bought what was advertised as a 1928 Studebaker big 6 rad shell. I knew it wasn't 1928 as like mentioned earlier this was for a curved radiator. The 1928 is flat, like my 1928 Dictator. I was guessing that the date was wrong and it was a 1926 Big 6 shell, upon getting it home I notice 2 little holes, one each side of the radiator filler hole, this is the same as my 1926 ER Standard 6, when I looked at the 1926 Big 6 I have it doesn't have these 2 little holes, and upon closer inspection the big 6 is physically a wider shell. Luckily I have 4 Studebakers, all with different shells and so chances were it would fit one of them, which it turns out will be the Standard 6. I don't actually need the shell, I just bought it to have in stock, if you are stuck let me know and I will send across some photo's etc. Regards Wayne
  19. I would be surprised if this was produced by Studebaker, as it looks like a cut down Sedan. In fact I have just done some searching on google and found this report in Hemmings stating that it was a cut down GE sedan, see: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/07/20/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1928-studebaker-dictator-pickup/ Wayne
  20. Dictator27, when you say Glycerine, is there a certain type? I have just looked on ebay.co.uk and it states vegetable Glycerine or Glycerine for fondant icing, is this the stuff? Wayne
  21. Earl, thanks for the details I will pass them on to my mate who is looking for the pistons. Glenn out of interest do you remember how much the pistons cost you and I assume it was the big 6 pistons that you had them make, as per the original post here. Regards Wayne
  22. Did you ever manage to find a source for the 1928 Big 6 pistons? I am also looking for a set of oversized pistons, any leads appreciated!!! Or a source for piston rings, as we could rebore the engine, then sleeve and bore out to the current size, this would be a last resort though. Wayne
  23. Would this gauge cluster be any good, advertised as a 1927 and so the gauge panel is a slightly different layout. http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/pts/4667608984.html Wayne Smith
  24. There is a guy here in the UK who has a 77 roadster, he has owned it for about 45 years, and he tells me it is the last of his American cars he would sell. It is a very pretty car, and of his collection definitely the one I would most like to own. Wayne
