  1. I suppose it really depends on what needs fixing. The shop manual explains how to disassemble and repair most parts and it doesn't look like rocket science if you have a fairly complete set of hand tools.
  2. Sorry for the confusion. The box is marked CF444-IW. Thanks so much for your help.
  3. logan, CF444-IW was the # I was given. The person told me that it was correct for the senior Packards of 1940 to 1950 (those models with the 356 engine). Would CF4441-IW be correct for that application? Thank you for the help!
  4. I am hoping someone with an obsolete Perfection Gear parts catalogue can help me find for which car make and model a clutch disc identified as Part # CF444-IW fits?
  5. The division window cars and taxis typically had a leather front seat did they not? The division window certainly looks like it was made with the same material as the seats. Interesting car.
  6. Dave Fields, The T&C is a very outstanding automobile. It is neither common or mundane! In my opinion it certainly is as deserving as my 1947 Packard Super Clipper which resides in my garage alone without the company of a Duesenberg! The fact remains that it is up to the club to make those determinations and from what I understand the Senior Clippers were included because they are essentially pre war models and make excellent touring cars for CCCA purposes. Likely many CCCA members were opposed to inclusion of this model and personally I would tend to agree. That it is a Full Classic is relevant to me should I decide to participate in a CARavan I can do so without expenditure of a lot of money that I don't have. I am grateful for that.

Why is the above so difficult for so many people to grasp? </div></div> The CCCA is a long established "Club" with a very defined interest in a specific era of automobile history and a class of automobiles built during that era. I just don't understand why anyone would get their nose out of joint just because a certain car is not included in the CCCA list. A couple of years ago a CCCA CARavan stopped overnight in our city. It was such a joy to see all the big Full Classic cars assembled in one location. If the club chose to allow more mundane and common cars to participate it would have certainly diminished the experience. Even the postwar Packards and Cadillacs seemed out of place. What is the big deal? Personally.....like Groucho Marx once said; "I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.” :-)
  8. If I am not mistaken the 4.09 was used when the car came equuipped with O/D and 3.92 without O/D. It might make a small difference but not worth the effort IMO.

There is a 32 tailight lens for sale on Ebay now.

    37 Sedan value?

http://www.stevevangordon.com/573/VintageCarAuction.html I believe this is the same car. It is a 120.
  11. The foglights on my 47 are quite small as well so I think the smaller version came out in 46 or 47.
  12. I just love all Packards of any era but I would have to say that I love the 1929-31 Eight with that big flat grille and the 1941-47 Clipper styling on the 127" wheelbase chassis the best. Regarding Trippe lights; in the book Packard, The Pride one of the featured cars is a 1947 2126 Clipper. In an old photo taken when the car was new it shows it equipped with what look like junior Trippes. Mention is made that the owner of the car traded in a 1938 Packard Twelve for his new Clipper so I suspect the Trippes may have come off his old trade in. I bought a set on Ebay and installed them on my '47 in place of the factory fog lights in the hopes of improving my night vision. When I converted the headlights to Bosch halogens I had no further need for the Trippes so converted back to the foglights. I never had anyone comment on the lights either way as far as authenticity or aesthetics. I know that they are nor period correct but obviously at least one owner installed them on his 1947 and to my taste they looked very nice.
  13. Kev, What paint did you use on the air cleaner? The oil bath one on my 47 appears to be galvanized and the paint didn't adhere very well. I have since removed al the paint again and want to do it right this time. Did you use a primer?

    1947 Super Clipper

Yes it should have an R-9.
  15. Thanks for the link also. I never tire of reading about my favourite Packard model.
  16. In 1990 I bought an '81 Ford Crown Victoria 4 door in Texas and drove it for about 9 years. The carburetor was the variable venturi but it rarely ever caused problems except once or twice when it froze up at -40. In 1995 I put an '85 5.0 Liter HO engine in it with an Edelbrock carb and manifold. It was never really very fast but it was a great car.
  17. I could be wrong but I think that the Patrician engine of 1953 was the 9 main 327 while the Caribbean used the 5 main version but you are right that the Caribbean did not use a special engine.
  18. The 1953 Packard Caribbean (2631 2678) used the 5 main bearing 327CID 180hp engine. The 54 Caribbean (5431 5478) was equipped with the 9 main bearing 359CID 212 HP engine. The 359 was only used in 1954. Both engines came with a 4 barrel carb. There were no 7 main bearing engines.
  19. Thanks for posting. I recall seeing the two toned 1946-47 Custom Clipper up here on a CCCA CARavan about 3 years ago. That car sure gets around.
  20. The blackwalls get my vote.Great looking car!

But that's what I've been getting. </div></div> Now I don't feel so bad with my '47 Super Clipper getting 15 on a good day!

Custom Eights don't have script there </div></div> Yes but the Super Eight does have door script "Super Clipper" or "Clipper Super" depending on which door. Both the Custom and Super shared the 127" wheelbase and the extra length over the 120" Junior Clipper is all in the hood area. The 282 engine is shorter than the Super or Custom "356" engine and the 356 just fits in that longer engine bay so I doubt that they could be swapped easily. just my $.02
  23. Jay, I have tried to figue the mpg on my '47 with mixed results. On highway trips it seems to get somewhere around 15mpg also. I have read where these big Clippers with overdrive can achieve 23mpg but I have never ever got close to that figure. The engine in my car is a bit of an oil burner and could probably use a rebuild but it is tuned properly and runs fine. I wish it could be better!
