2. Wayne,I could post the photo of me between two Cuban "ladies" in Havana who ripped me off for ten $ but that will cost you $15 Sorry to be so mercenary but business is business.
3. West, I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues to happen. I installed a T fitting and a small mechanical gauge next to the sending unit in mine as a backup and to monitor oil pressure when under the hood with the motor running. Possibly a loose wire connection? That is one beautiful Packard!
4. The cost of restoring a 1947 Super Clipper from the condition you say it is to a presentable car would likely be far more than what the car would be worth when finished. The 47's are magnificent cars and if you want one look for one that is already restored and spare yourself the expense and time of restoration.
5. The '47 is pre bathtub for sure.
6. Kev, I bought a quart to paint the 356 and not much left over; maybe about 6 oz..
7. I agree not a 443 but possibly a 533 6 cylinder.
8. Is that a 1922 Twin-Six engine with two cylinders loped off??
9. Kev, Bill Hirsch lists it at $14 for a 14oz. aerosol can.
10. West, I know my eyes are bad but not that bad! Look again at the pink order form. If that doesn't read Air conditioning" I'm going back to kindergarten.
11. West, Is your step-fathers car the Pilsbury family car from Minneapolis featured in the book Packard:The Pride.?
12. West, Look at the pink order form under the word "Body Undercoating". It sure looks like "air conditioning" to me.
13. Attached is a photo of an uncle of mine taken on July 31, 1923 in New Brunswick, Canada. The wedded couple are standing in front of a touring car. It's not much to go on but maybe the wheels or grille might help identify the make.
14. Did I read that invoice right? Air conditioning! Wow I imagine that was an expensive and rare option especially on a "junior" Packard. Thanks for sharing.
15. It's worth more than that parted out (heaven forbid!!) The Super Clipper is a fantastic car.
16. I painted the block on my '47 356" engine with a quart of Bill Hirsh paint. I found that it would get very tacky very fast with a brush so I took the can to a local paint shop and had them make me up a "rattle can" and used that on the parts that had been removed. I had taken the cylinder head, oil fill tube and thermostat housing off and did those separately. I think that it did a very nice job. Like West I removed all the accessories and in my case the manifolds as well. I used a photo of a 356 engine in the Packard; The Pride Book as a guide. The important thing is to get the block absolutelly clean and down to bare metal and that can take a good deal of effort. I am guessing tat I spent a good week or more of chemical paint stripping, wire brushing, and steel wool to get the block down to shiny metal. With the addition of chrome castle head nuts it looked spectacular!

I agree with Mike. It looks like a nice car for the money. If it's a Super Eight it will have a 327 engine and if not a 288. The visor is a bonus but a bigger one to my mind is that the car has overdrive (notice the white knob under the dash by the steering column). If you can get the numbers from the dat plate on the firewall and get back to us. Good luck!

I grew up in Windsor and worked along the Detroit River as a game warden for several years (occasionally on the US side with a Mich. DNR Officer) and had my share of meeting some pretty tough characters. I must have had a guardian angel watching over me when I ventured into the Willis Showbar or Anderson's Gardens at Willis and Third etc. in the early 70's. I recall as a small boy going to the G.A.R. building with my grandfather at night and walking along Grand River and Cass Aves.

1949 Sedan

I don't think it's a Custom because the hubcaps aren't cloisonne and the Custom had two stainless trim pieces above the rockers not one. It looks like a nice car but be sure to inspect the usual rust out areas like rocker panels, inner fender liners and floors. Good solid reliable cars but if possible take someone with you familiar with the model. It does have a Cormorant which is a nice bonus!
21. JT, I've never tried it on the inside so can't say. I use it about twice a summer but the saying in these parts is that summer is "ten months of winter and two months of poor sledding" but I would say once a month should be plenty. It comes in a spray bottle and prewet tissues but I like the spray best. It works so well that often even in heavy rain wipers aren't even necessary.

I'll bet a metal detector would locate a few items buried in the earth about the place but I suspect that it is a very dangerous neighbourhood area to play in.
23.

Quote:

With a nice rainy day here in southern Ohio, I took it out and tried the wipers. Wowie!! They slide over the windsheild like a knife through hot butter (or a hot knife through butter).

West, I'm a great believer in a product called "Rain X". It really helps to keep the windshield and windows clear of rain especially in my Packard. I have had the car in torrential downpours and the wipers with the help of RainX the visibility is excellent. I use it on all my cars.
24. First car I drove was my fathers 1948 Ford. I bought my first car a 1952 Chrysler Windsor in 1965 for $200. Sure wish I had it know!

If I remember correctly, he lives in a swamp somewhere in Arizona. He doens't like postwar Packards, so he'll probably be able to give you a real thorough description of everything that's wrong with that particular car! Hope I don't get banned from the forum for suggesting this!

Don't forget to have your cheque book handy as he is/was, after all still a lawyer The '50 chassis and engine are of prewar design (although not a V-12) so he wouldn't be too critical. Seriously he would probably give a very thorough assessment.
