Another by Deutsch of Cologne, very similar to the Alamy car, also I would suggest Deutsch but just enough different... The trafficators in the windshield frame, its rounded top (rather than squared off) slightly different beltline beading with pointed molding lead me to believe these are two examples of similar Deutsch coachwork on the Ford V-8 chassis. It's a great Ford custom, perhaps Matford or Ford Eifel, but I question the Alexis Kellner build... Given the crispness at the cowl, the square up frame at top and the beltline beading, I don't think it's this one, either. With the exception of the grille, the resemblance to this '37 Ford by Deutsch is much closer. This incredible '31-'32 Cadillac Cabriolet by Voll & Ruhrbeck (or another similar) may have been the inspiration for the '33 Fleetwood Style 5586. The family that runs these auctions is the same that puts on the Veterama Show in Mannheim and has the Automuseum Dr. Carl Benz in nearby Ladenburg, Germany. TG

A favorite image from a friend's private collection is this from the 1911 Glidden Tour, with Charles J. Glidden riding in the back seat of the AAA President's car, a new 1912 Garford at an unknown location. The owner of the Chiquola Hotel in Anderson, SC participated in the 1909 New York Herald - Atlanta Journal Good Roads Tour, the 1910 Atlanta Journal - New York Herald Good Roads Tour and the 1911 Glidden Tour. The hotel owner, Robert R. "Bob" King fielded a a 1911 Mitchell Four in the '11 Glidden Tour, and after each of the tours ordered official photos for his scrapbook. His daughter shared the scrapbook with me about 15 years ago and was delighted to learn more about the images it contained. The AAA 1911 Glidden Tour official rules and route book can be seen in the breast pocket of Mr. Glidden's duster. The New York Public Library has a copy of the rule book in their Maps Collection, but I'm sure there are many in private hands. John Mereness, in 1986 I had some black & white film in my camera and visited the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, Long Island, the former "Eagle's Nest" estate of William K. Vanderbilt. The winged wheel motif was the symbol of the Good Roads Movement and had so many other applications. I'm hoping Watch Fob Man extraordinaire Terry Bond will come on board and put this to rest. I'm leaning toward a generic "Anycar" type. TG

1932 Chrysler Imperial Cabriolet by Drauz for King Carol II of Romania, found in the January 1935 issue of "Overseas Graphic," published for foreign markets by the Chrysler Export Corporation, Detroit, MI. King Carol II had quite a stable of coachbuilt cars... "Personalities... La SARAL, S.A., our distributors in Bucharest have kindly sent us this interesting picture of His Majesty Carol II, King of Romania, (sitting) in his brand new Imperial Chrysler during the festivities recently held in the capital of the kingdom." King Carol II is the man in plumed hat and moustache in the back seat of the Imperial Cabriolet by Drauz of Heilbronn, Germany. A 1931 Imperial Cabriolet by Alexis Kellner of Berliin, also owned by King Carol II, as shown in the July 1932 issue of "Overseas Graphic". TG

All I know is that it's a former John O'Quinn car sold at Amelia in 2010, and at Meadow Brook in 2006, both by RM. Period pics would be nice.

J542 was added to the Cofer Collection in 1967, around the time of this image. I later underwent a lengthy restoration that resulted in the black top and chromed wheels. In the '50's to some point in the '60's it was two-toned with a black top as seen here. Same time frame and colors as in this 1957 CCCA Caravan film... The film is a pretty cool thing to watch, by the way... Enjoy, TG
