  2. RULES: People need to put some effort into their sales - lazy rarely cuts it. And people really do not want to talk to you and may or may not want to come to your house either, so you have to give them all the ammunition for the gun (ie spend some time on descriptions). Take good photography - photos for the advertisement and then photos to send in email. And, most things have a finite price, so pipe dreams will not get you what you want. My parents lived in Jacksonville for 10 years - they really enjoyed their car club activities and loved Amelia Island Concours, but as far as Car Club activities in their area it was not real active as to car usage - the locals either complained it was too hot or too cold and as a result rarely got their cars out. Dad said the only real active group with cars was the Model A Club. I believe they went to Georgia or .. for some gaslight activities, though. There was also the "fun", of taking the cars down to the hospital parking garage and covering them up for hurricanes - that was by the way
  4. Yes, a lot of people will disagree with me about LA, but the density of people interested in Pre-WWII cars matched to the large number of activities ... - it is a blast. That said, anyone who has lived in the suburbs and/or commuted into or worked in a larger downtown will probably say NO-THANK-YOU !!!

  6. Actually, you did fine and no need to beat yourself up over it. An auction is about as calculated a formula as they come. Also, very few RR cars have done well value wise and for several years now. The RR that was run through the Worldwide sale over the weekend also had an incredible amount of money dumped into it and stands a chance of being a looser for the owner in value not exceeding restoration costs. Also, to get the "extra" you would have had considerable restoration work/pick-me-up-work to do-redo - that puts things more into a risky class as to ROI too. Back in mayb

I actually like the auction venue(s), but each sale and each company tends to have their "cup of tea" and Shawn screams at my right and left that it is just easier to not do the strategy and avoid, so when we put a car out for auction (which is rare), there are some serious discussions that go along with how it is to be handled. Also, it turns out that a lot of people prefer not to bid at auction - they would rather deal with a car on their own terms via a dealer or .... - You see a couple key dealers do very well picking cars up at auction and then reselling.

I would have described this Packard as Turquoise with Gold metallic flake - it was original paint that survived to 1999 to have the next owner paint it resale red (unfortunate and probably it would not happen today). Interestingly Ed mentioned this Pierce Arrow when restored was not put back to its factory show car color, but upon giving it thought the owner of the Pierce Arrow (who my 1935 Auburn Sedan came from as well) and the owner of the above Packard (a relative) both lived in Dayton, OH and it was recently mentioned they went to high school together and ... There is a wonderful original 1941 Cadillac 60 Special Fleetwood at the Crawford Museum on Cleveland - donated by the Owner of Thompson Products, the Founder of the Museum - I would describe it as Black with a Silver roof - "Silver with the finest of Gold flake powder." Fish scale probably gave the appearance of more of silver metallic, but obviously did not hold up well. Yep, seems to be the theme and problem (and I have a really broad interest in cars - Gene Perkins pulled me aside years ago and said "I know you like sports cars and I like them too, but as long as I am able I hope to bring pre-WWII cars out and I hope you will always do the same thing").   15. Congratulations on the new purchase - when it rains it pours. I was just telling a story this morning of my encouraging (a now ACD Board member) to get an ACD car and nose dive in (they had been looking for a boattail and none really available at the time they wanted) - so they bought an 851 Phaeton and it opened the doors for them to get two boattails of their choosing).   16. Correct !!! A lot of cars have shut off valves to stop flow from vacuum tank to carb - ie the valves leaked when parked when the cars were new. And, if you are no longer using a vacuum tank, then I would bet a pound of fuel pump pressure from an electric pump may even be a challenge. Best you can probably do is try value lapping compound followed by perhaps toothpaste or polishing compound.
  17. Most of the opalescent paint I have found pre-WWII have super fine gold powder in the paint and virtually none of the paints held up well (aka why a lot of survivor cars are black matched to the live fast die young set going through all the red ones early on)
  18. This one is a little more thought out than most of the replicas. There are also replicas on complete Auburn drivetrains and ... - the variations are almost endless (some are just not done though to anything close to original looks - lets use the term for most of the replicas "cheese-y").

  20. Bidding stalled at 210K (which is pretty decent # compared to other recent sales) to be a no sale - we will see via their reporting if it sells behind the scenes.
  21. Dealt with Packard after Packard with too much wear on the rod/arm for the fuel pump and picking up extra noise there - best I can tell is rebuilders have time gave resurfaced the rod/arm. And, could be a part within pump. Perhaps try to find a NOS Buick fuel pump and then rebuilt that. And not sure who is the best pump rebuild person these days.
  22. As a sidenote: You cannot get a discount on your fire insurance by buying a Fire truck alone, you have to have a full time firefighter 'staff" on site and on salary 24-7 (- ie. friends recently tied)
