1. I would say "drive it" but that would be hippocritical. I would love to drive my '59 Invicta or '65 Wildcat cross country to the national, but the thought scares me. I can't imagine something going wrong and being stuck. I'm a novice mechanic at best and don't have those "spare parts" mentioned above for the trip. I am not too far away from you though, so if I decide to drive, I'll certainly contact you to become part of a caravan. I'm assuming Ted Nagel will be driving one of his beauties, but haven't heard which one he is taking yet. Let us know what you decide!
2. how about a '59 Buick version? Great wallpapers.......
3. I have found that the armrests for the '65 Wildcat are available from the Performance Pontiac Parts website, as they are identical to the Pontiac bases of the era. (great place to get reproduction stickers for the deluxe seat belts as well). I'm not sure if they have a direct replacement for a '62, but it's worth a shot and would definetely be cheaper than refinishing.
4. The posi i picked up for my '65 Wildcat came off a '67 Rivi and it was a 3.23.
5. Mine is a basic model 4041 Buick Special. I think the Blackwalls are a perfect solution. It should also set the car off from the others. As a side note, if you wanted to break it up a bit, but not go 100% period correct, you could always add some pizzazz by painting or powder coating the wheels an accent color other than black?
6. I've got a few models that are rarely reproduced and very difficult to find 1959 Buick Invicta 4 door Hardtop (In black) 1965 Buick Wildcat Custom Convertible (in Red) Hot wheels hasn't even touched either of these cars........
7. I use Vintage plates on all my cars here in Ohio. It doesn't matter if they are "clear" or not, as they are not the actual plate number assigned to the car. Ohio issues "historical" plates and links the "model year" plates to those historical plates in their database.
8. Beautiful addition to your collection Ted.....Looks like I need to get back down there an take another look as you've really made some changes in the last 6 months! I can't believe these fine cars you keep coming up with!
9. You're going to need a bigger Garage soon Ted! You are my hero.
10. DAMN! that Wildcat is looking FINE! I've got to get back down there to see you soon. I can't wait to find the right 2 dr sedan to add to my collection. Good luck with the new project and congratulations on your General Managers Award at Nationals!
11. riwire looks like it's about $870 once you add all the harnesses up. You do have to order each individually, right, the main harness is only for the engine, dash and headlights, then everything else is sold separately?
12. Thanks. That's what I thought! I'm working on the engine....but when I get frustrated I have to switch gears and work on something else for a while! I got a nice shiny new exhaust installed today!!!!! Got the wheel cylinders in the mail today, so I'll finish the brakes tomorrow and head back to the engine. Thanks!
13. Can't seem to get the pic to load? It's 640x480? The postive battery cable to the starter looks to be 2 gauge.(I think it should be 1?) The negative cable is 4 gauge. (I know that should be a strap instead, but is that also equivalent to a 1 gauge?) The other wire connected to the battery is a small wire, 14 gauge or so, connected to the coil instead of the key ignition. The car turned over and ran fine(with gas poured into the carb) when I bought it, but will only go grrr grrr grrr slowly now? The battery does register 6.4 volts. Is that enough or does it need charged? (i know 12 volt batteries normally measure about 13.5 or so and have heard that these 6 volt systems are tougher to start.)
14. Okay, so I'm needy. I admit it! Attached is a picture of the setup that was on the car when I bought it. I installed a new battery today and attempted to start the engine. It chugged, like a car with a dying battery. The system is still 6 volt. The starter and Generator have supposedly been rebuilt not too long ago. I'm not sure of the status of the coil or the dist/cap/etc. There is no key, so the positive line of the battery cable is connected directly to the coil with what looks like a 14 or 16 gauge wire. The other side of the coil has a deteriorating wire running down to the starter. Question, are these lightweight wires what is causing me not to get a fast grind of the starter and if so, what gauge should I use? any other ideas would be appreciated as well.
15. I filled up the radiator and turned the engine over today and discovered this leak coming from behind the fan pulley. Is this a common problem and how do I fix it? Pic attached. Thanks!
16. Can anyone direct me to a source for a wiring harness for a 1940 Buick Special? I can't decide whether I want to stay 6 volt or go 12, but am leaning towards 6 volt. I'm looking for an "affordable" harness! $ about $750 is what I've seen so far.....at that price, I think I'll have to keep patching the wire at this point.........
17. I've done a search and can't find any info. I assume standard 90w gear lubricant should be used in the differential, but what kind of fluid should I refill my transmission case and steering box with. Also, not knowing the history of the car, would it be better to just drain and fill these or should they be flushed like the manual says?
18. Where are you located? Does it have side mounts? Can you send pictures to 1940buickspecial"AT"gmail.com? Thanks!
19. I can't identify this broken suspension part in my chassis or body manual? Can anyone supply a name and part number for it? This is from a 1940 buick special. Thanks!
20. you said exhaust manifolds, did you mean to say intake, or did you mean both, or just exhaust. The one I'm looking at is casting #1306218 2. I haven't had a chance to pick up an interchange manual yet, but this one is not listed in my 36-60 parts book at all? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
21. Thanks! I've got a question. My intake manifold has been welded several times and is cracked again. I've seen several listed on Ebay for 1941-? Is this a completely different unit, or will it work on the '40 as well? Oh, and here's a picture of the supposed oil filter? (what could cause gas to enter the oil?)
22. I just picked up a 1940 Buick Special last week. It's not quite as far done as I would have liked, but the price was right. The engine and tranny are supposed to be solid, but the brakes are shot and it needs a battery. I spent all day yesterday taking pictures and inspecting the car. It has a little more rust on the floorboards than I originally thought, but most of it has been amateurishly repaired with sheet metal, so it will work for now. Interior needs complete restoration as well as new chrome on most of the exterior and 3 pieces of front window glass. (although it did come with a brand new headliner, yards of windlace and wire-on, and brake parts) I'm planning on checking out all the threads with 1940 in the title to find as much info as possible, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated! My major points of concern/questions at this point are: -Is there a transmission dipstick (I couldn't find one and missed it in the shop manual if it's there) -where's the best place to buy an affordable 6 volt battery (not looking for show quality) -What is the black cylinder on the front right of the engine, just above the fuel pump? -it looked like an oil filter, but the fluid in it smelled like gas and was thin? -any suggestions that would help in locating parts suppliers and model/year information would be greatly appreciated!
