  1. The ad states,"When it was purchased in 1973, it was an excellent original car, showing no signs of damage, repair, neglect or rust. The current owner kept it in excellent original condition until about 2006 when he embarked on a no expense spared, frame off restoration to show quality standards." As always, a car owner is can do whatever he/she wants to do with their car, but if it was truly in excellent original condition, the vehicle could have been left as-is and the owner could have sold it and be financially ahead, and someone could have ended up with an excellent original 1956 Chevrolet Nomad. Nevertheless, it is still a nice car.
  2. Gene Renninger's store was an institution that served the Model A community for many, many years. I did not know his son had sold the business until just now.
  3. DriveAG, you proved my point. Ethanol blended gasoline is not suited for aviation because of its propensity to cause problems. Even though, as you pointed out, an airplane cannot be pulled to the side of the road when failure occurs, why would anyone justify the use of ethanol by saying you just pull your broken down car to the side of the road. As far as I'm concerned, I don't want to pull my car to the side of the road and call AAA because of an ethanol related engine problem. I'll stick with non-ethanol blended gasoline and for those who want to use E10 gasoline, keep your AAA card handy.
  4. For those people who think the use of ethanol in gasoline is no big deal, explain the reason the aviation industry abhors the use of ethanol as an additive in aircraft fuel. Do you think maybe they are on to something?
  5. helfen, based on your second to the last paragraph, your recommendation is to spray all 10 coats of lacquer at one sitting, in other words, you did not wet-sand between multiple coats, which is contrary to what some painters say is best. Would you say wet-sanding between coats of lacquer to achieve maximum gloss and depth of finish is a waste of time?
  6. I believe lacquer can be made to last without chipping or cracking if sprayed following certain application procedures. I would also expect the type of primer or undercoat to have an influence on the longevity of lacquer paint. Maybe some type of additive mixed with lacquer paint would make it just a little less hard while still allowing it to buff to a high gloss.
  7. Are you sure that's not a hand-carved wooden dash you have there?
  8. I personally am not interested in the engine and transmission, but it's big of you to offer it to the AACA community before they are scrapped. I had a 1929 Plymouth roadster I sold 20 years ago and the buyer wasn't interested in the 4-cylinder engine that came with car, so I scrapped it. No internet back then to offer it to anyone.
  9. Good point about the trailer being being included in the total package. Many other people are also of the opinion the Model A was overvalued at $20,000, but the trailer being included does make a difference.
  10. West, that's a very interesting photo of a straight 12 cylinder engine.
  11. What type of paint did you use on your car? Did it go on easy and would you use it again?
  12. Thundershine, We realize you're trying to help your aunt obtain the best price on the Monte Carlo, and it is unique because of the low mileage status. As far as your comment below, were the $40 to $60 grand auction prices? "On the Lincoln's. it shows top end being $22,000 but I've seen a lot of the super low mileage ones go between $40 and $60 grand."
  13. Most people would have just followed up with a simple "Car has been sold", but the fact that a proclamation was written about the vehicle being sold to a dealer who knows the classic car market, etc. is another way of saying the poster received many comments about the vehicle being overpriced. So in reality, the car has not sold for close to $24,000.
  14. People don't generally associate a 6-cylinder flat-head with a Ford product, but the scan of the part number identifying the head says it all.
  15. As a result of being fenderless, the car's headlights were mounted to the cowl for use at night.
  16. The radiator shell is 1931. The fenders are 1930/31. The raised boss that runs down the length of the door and body where the door handles are mounted point it to being a 1928/29. The vehicle is definitely unique.
  17. There are two well known Washingtons at opposite ends of the United States.
  18. Actually, $500.00 is a generous offer. Heavy iron (engines and transmissions) is harder to sell.
  19. As was noted, a 12 volt battery can be used to jump start a 6 volt battery. Remove the jumper cables as soon as possible after the 6 volt car starts up. Also, make sure none of the 6 volt lights or other accessories are on when jump starting from a 12 volt battery. Touching the brake pedal during the jump-start will cause the brake light bulbs to burn-out on the 6 volt car.
  20. Tell me about it. I owned a 1956 Plymouth 40 years ago that was in need of a paint job, as no amount of wax would help bring back the shine. I bought a gallon of clear Dupont enamel and brushed it on the car using a fine bristle brush. The paint flowed extremely well making any brush marks barely perceptible and resulted in a finish that looked no different than the wet deep gloss seen on new base coat/clear coat paint jobs of today. Even professional painters were surprised by the results.
  21. The issue of using STP in a steering box came up in the 1955-57 Chevy Forum. The site moderator made the following comment: "STP is not a lubricant. It is a viscosity index modifier. Sooooo - the STP is not going to be beneficial and will most likely cause a lubrication related failure." Steering box oil recommendations - The Forums at Chevy Talk
  22. You may be given the opportunity to buy new old stock rebuild kits or new old stock wheel cylinders. Be careful about using the rubber piston cups as these components can be aged to the extent that they are not safe. I do not know what the shelf life is on wheel cylinder piston cups, but I'm hoping someone can advise on how old is too old.
