  1. The first car that jumped out at me was the '72 Lemans...looks to be the same color as the '71 Lemans that was my first car. The other thing that stuck out to me is the diversity of colors instead of the shades of gray that seem so popular today.
  2. Wish I could help...because then maybe I could get one too. Anyway, here is a bump up so hopefully you can get some help finding one.
  3. Saw a similar vintage Cutlass Supreme today done up like that...except it was painted purple. I wanted to cry.
  4. The Impala trunk pan should work for a '62 Electra too, shouldn't it?
  5. I'm 37, and even though I am not thrilled with the increase in dues I am still a member (reduced the cost by just renewing for 3 years...saving something like $30). I haven't made it to Nats yet, but not because of the cost of registering, but because they were too far to make it to with the family. Almost made it to Rochester a few years ago and Ames this year because I was in MN both summers in the process of moving to a new duty station, but the timing didn't work out. This year Nats was two weeks after I had to be at my new duty station in Georgia.
  6. Use Jamco Suspension - Jamco Suspension, Your #1 Source for Hot Rod Brakes and Suspension!. The have a 63-70 Riviera lowering kit on sale now for $409.95...just saw it on the front page of their website.
  7. For good all around mechanic work I like Meier's Motors (a couple blocks west of Mason St on Wisconsin Ave.). I have taken my cars there a few times when I have been in town, my dad took his cars there for years, and my mom continues to take her car there.
  8. Nobody has any recommendations on who to use to get my car transported? Surely someone here has something to say.
  9. I'm looking for recommendations. I have a '62 Buick Electra that I need transported from Camp Pendleton, CA (between San Diego and Los Angeles) to my in-law's in Minnesota. The car will be going into storage at my in-law's house until I get settled in at my new duty station in Georgia. I am fairly flexible on dates, I just need it out of here by the end of May since I will be leaving the first week of June.

The headlight area shows a strong resemblance to the original Saturns, which since they came out in '91 would have been in the design phase around 1988.
  11. I'll be leaving here around the first week of June and have to be in Albany, GA by mid-July. The 5-6 weeks between when I leave here and when I arrive in GA is what is complicating the move of the car.
  12. I've only done the passenger side so far, and that one didn't require turning. I was going to do the driver's side today, but the weather hasn't been cooperating. I have to have the garage door open when working on the car because the car barely fits in the garage, and it was windy and rainy today.
  13. I want to give a big THANK YOU! to everybody here. Today I got the passenger side back together and took it for a little test drive. It was a huge improvement, but also highlighted the fact that I still need to do the other side. Hopefully the other side will go a bit faster since I now have everything I need to do the job and I have done it once now and have at least a small clue as to what I am doing.
  14. I have to say that working on the car this past weekend was for the most part pretty relaxing and felt good. That's the good part...the not so good part is that by doing this I have found things to add to my "to do" list. Oh well, it will be a good learning experience. When I ordered the grease seal I ordered two so I can do the other side as well. Now that I have a better idea of what I am doing I think the other side will go faster. I'm looking forward to driving it when I am done...can't wait to see what the difference is.
  15. Thanks John! After taking a break from it I went back and looked at it and thought about it some. After thinking about it the rough spot did look like a casting and not damage. The areas where the bearings make contact look good. Now I have everything cleaned up and am just waiting to put it back together. I went to my local Napa to pick up a new grease seal. Of course they didn't have one in stock so I have to wait for it to come from LA.
  16. First of all, I want to thank all of you for your replies. I am pretty much a newbie when it comes to working on this old Buick. I have worked on cars before, but never anything as old as this and working on the front brakes of this car is totally new to me. So, on to my next question. I started cleaning things up and when I cleaned the old grease off of the spindle I noticed something that in my newbie head doesn't look right. As you can see in the pictures below the spindle has a nice machined surface until just before it tapers down to the threads. Is this normal? The reason I ask is that it is not even all the way around (which you might see in the picture). It might be normal, but I don't know and that is why I am asking. Thanks!
  17. Between two trucks like that it doesn't matter if your car is foreign or domestic...you are going to get squished. Here's a link to what Snopes.com has on that picture... http://www.snopes.com/photos/accident/smallcar.asp Basically, it wasn't a Smart car it was actually a domestic Ford Escape.
  18. John, that sounds like a good idea. Tomorrow after church I'll be stopping to get brake cleaner and grease. I can then clean up the drum and take it in and get it checked.
  19. Haven't gotten it back together yet. I wasn't thinking when I started and I don't have any brake cleaner or grease. Right now I have kid duty while my wife is out at Pampered Chef party and she has the car with the kids car seats in it. No noticeable drop in brake fluid in the master cylinder, so I think that dark spot is there from previous repairs. The front shoe has a fairly even glaze to it except for at the top edge and then one roundish spot a little below that. I'm not experienced enough to know if that is a problem or not. I found the section of the service manual on adjusting the wheel bearings and when I get to that point I will be following that procedure. I'm pretty sure the majority (if not all) of the problem was loose wheel bearings as I had the movement when I rocked the tire back and forth and when I took the drum off I was able to remove the spindle nut with my fingers and very little effort.
  20. OK, I got to work on it this morning. I jacked it up before loosening the lug nuts so I could check bearing adjustment. When I rocked the tire it made a similar noise to the one I heard when braking, which leads me to believe it was a bearing adjustment problem. Anyway, I continued with removing the drum/hub assy to check for any problems there. In my limited experience I don't see any other issues other than things looking rather grungy. So, I think I will be cleaning and repacking the bearings and reassembling. Here are some pics... Here it is with the wheel off... A better view of some of the gunk and grime... The drum/hub removed... The inside of the drum...
  21. I'll be moving to Albany, GA this summer. What complicates moving the car is that we will be "homeless" for about 6 weeks while we move, since I'll be taking 30 days of leave in conjunction with the days I get to move. I'll almost be able to make it to Ames, but will have to be in GA a few days before the meet starts. I'll be visiting family in MN and WI during the move, so Ames wouldn't be too far out of the way. Similarly, I almost made it to Rochester in 2006, the year the Marine Corps moved me from WI to CA, but had to be in CA about two weeks before the meet.
  22. It looks and sounds like a good vehicle to bring the Sportwagon name back for.
  23. Thanks for the replies! I will be getting into it this weekend and will be taking the drum/hub off and inspecting things. I haven't driven it in a couple of months because it was bad enough that I no longer felt safe driving it. My shocks need replacing too so I will probably do that while I have things apart. Fortunately I will be moving in a few months so I am limited in how much I can let this project snowball. Of course, that brings up a question of how I am going to get the car across the country, but that is a whole different thread.
  24. Hopefully this doesn't sound too dumb, but you guys seem to know what you are talking about with this stuff. When I got my 62 Electra out of storage a few years ago I took the car in and had some brake work done. The brakes worked good after that. Since then, though, the brakes have gotten worse. There is a pretty rough pulsing when I hit the brakes which feels like it is coming from the passenger side front. It sounds horrible because something makes a thunking noise with the pulsing. It started out only doing it when I got on the brakes hard, but now does it pretty much every time I come to a stop. I'm planning on going through the brakes myself and see if I can get them working right. My gut feeling (and I hope I am wrong) is that the drum is out of round. Any ideas? What should I look for when I get into this?
