  1. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Can anyone explain the crystal key concept to me. I've heard some from other people, but I'm still not sure what they are all about. </div></div>

This is a quote from Chrysler (Back in the Day)....................

"With Chrysler's Crystal Key Owner Care Program, for five years or 50,000 miles all you do is take care of normal maintenance, adjustments, and wear items. Chrysler takes care of everything else. Engine, power train, air conditioning, steering, electrical. Everything right down to the door handles. And you're still protected on the engine and power train for seven years or 70,000 miles, and outer body rust-through for seven years or 100,000 miles. If you have a question or need assistance, there's a 24-hour toll-free hotline."

    ANSWER IS..............It was a Service Plan for the TC. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The ignition key was gold colored (don't know if gold plated) and the head of the key has a Clear Crystal Pentagram inserted in it. The keys can be purchased but blanks are expensive. There were two versions, a Single Cut for NON Airbag cars and Double Cut for Airbag cars. The trunk key remained the same with the TC logo on it.

  2. As most of you know I am in the Automobile Salvage Industry. I inventory cars and put parts that can be used again in the computer for our multi-store Sales Force.

During my lunch break I ran a quick search and found some Good News and Bad News!

BAD NEWS is that there are 25 TCs in Salvage Yards across the US. You must realize that there could be more, but these are reported cars into the data processing environment. It will be a matter of time before these cars will be crushed.

GOOD NEWS is that there are original parts available to you if you are lucky enough to find them.

    Breakdown is:

    1989 - (13) IL,AR,WI,FL(2),MN,PA(2),NY(2),NC,SC,TN

    1990 - (7) OH,IN,MI,AL,CA(3)

    1991 - (5) MD,KY,WA,CA,ID

It would take more time than I can dedicate to identify exactly where in each state these cars are located.

But (ie) if you are in California, go to your local larger auto salvage yard and ask them to "Locate" the THREE TCs in your state.

The ball is in your court!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Ok, I've joined TCA, ordered a Shop Manual and a Crystal Key.

The top is done and everything else is in great working order!!

NOW.................time to work on the Stereo.

First of all the power antenna was replaced with a fixed mast antenna. The original (not mechanically inclined) went through the car wash listening to the radio.............Duh!!!!!

Anyway not knowing you can replace the "Mast" section, he paid someone to chop and substitute. And threw away all the old parts. OK, 1987 Fifth Avenue antenna plugs into stock harness and works perfectly. Hole in fender needed some adjusting and a little bracket bending.

    BUT here is my problem................

When I turn on the radio there is a loud buzzing in the left front speaker. Sort of a amplified zipper sound. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes not!!

So, since the radio was quite worn and the cassette didn't work, I thought the problem might be in the radio. So I replaced it with a 1990 LeBaron unit.

It's better, but still does it from time to time.

You might ask why not go to CD!! I am, as soon as I get the bugs worked out.

I have a large format Pioneer, Pioneer XM that is in my Bonneville that will be moving once the stock system is working great.

SO, any help with the buzzing???? Are the speakers themselves amplified or are they just #x# speakers that can be bought through Crutchfield?? I have not attacked the door yet!!

  5. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I know even MORE information...............

Gad, I might be getting dangerous with so much info!!!

Yes, the headliner color is Tan (I thought Ginger and Tan were the same color) and NOW we all know there was a top change for 1991 cars.

Now I guess we will have to decipher WHEN that SIX to FOUR lock change took place!!

    THANKS TO ALL!!

  6. What color is your hardtop and what color is the headliner???

Our 91 is White/Black/Black/V6/49state but has a GINGER HEADLINER in the HardTop

I am the second owner and have known the original owner for 20 years and he claims it is the original top that came with the car. Shouldn't it have been Black to match the rest of the interior???

ALSO, when did the hardtop go from SIX Locking points to ONLY FOUR???

REMEMBER-If you don't ask - You may never know the answer!!!!

  7. I was raised around cars and my blood type is 10W30!!

So I have always enjoyed tinkering. The reason for such a lengthly post was not only to explain how I got from point "A" to point "B", but also to answer that un-asked question someone might have had!!

The local weathermans DART hit in the "Partly Sunny" area of the board for tomorrow and the top will be down and I'll be CRUZIN"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. First I checked to see if I had power at the connector. YES 12V present.

I then removed the assembly and took the motor off and reinstalled the assembly to see if it would work strictly manual. It worked BUT without the motor keeping tension on the latches, the rear would not stay latched. So I took the motor apart and lubed it. I then bench tested it and it works fine. No bad tooth problems either. Pulled the assembly again and reinstalled the motor...........didn't work.......back to "0"!!!!!!

THEN starting at the motor I checked for current through the relay on back....12V yes...NEG-NADA!!

Traced back all the way to switch and BINGO!!!!!!!! Removed switch and cleaned terminals..............TOP IS 100% OPERATIONAL!!!!!!

I should have started at the switch and worked that way. But having 12V at the plug I just assumed that the wiring was good to go!! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

  9. I'll try that tomorrow, thanks.

Everything I have heard about the top mechanism is...........BE CAREFULL!! IT'S FRAGILE!! DON'T HOLD THE SWITCH TOO LONG!! YOU WILL BURN IT UP!!

I guess I am too concerned about doing something "Out of Sequence"!!

One thing I have learned IS THE OPPOSITE of what the original owner told me though..... He said to latch the front latches first and THEN use the pull down. I finally found a thread (I went all the way back to 2002) that said pull down the rear AND THEN latch the front!!! And the way I was told to do it is the MAIN reason for motor failure.

Anyway I need to get my next door neighbor to come over and help me remove the hardtop so I can play with the softtop and ............who knows, I might be in business with all this new information.

    Thanks again-JD

  10. Everything pertaining to both tops is perfect...............

The tonneau works perfectly............Electrically AND Mechanically!!

EXCEPT............the pull down mechanism seems FROZEN in place.

Is this a common thing??? Maybe from lack of use????

The switch for the pull down makes no sound whatsoever. AND the Lug Wrench manual overide does nothing either. I have applied very little pressure to the manual operation since I am not sure is enough!!

My question is.........can I remove the motor and use the manual overide alone until I find a new motor or fix mine?????? And if so, what is the disassembly procedure (since I have no shop manual, HINT, HINT).

Presently the Hardtop is held in place with the front latches and the weight of the top is making a so-so seal in the rear.

BUT, I want to use the soft top so I can take advantage of those RARE Sunny Winter Days and go "TopLess". But when I put the soft top up and NOT being able to pull it down in the rear...........I have a 1 inch gap between the bottom of the top and the top of the tonneau cover. A rainstorm would be a BIG problem!!

    HELP!!!!!!

  11. Wayne-

The channel locks are the only thing missing. I'll check with the original owner to see if he still has them. The gloves were in the compartment but I didn't know they were part of the kit.

The original owner (that I bought the car from) did not even know about the umbrella (and still doesn't know). When I was first looking at the car, I asked him about it and he said he never got it, and jokingly said "I better go back to my salesman".

<img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />It was in the clips and has never been out of the case or opened.

    Thank you, very much.

  12. Does anyone have a picture of an "Original" fully stocked Zippered Leather Case that came with your TC??

Mine has a Swiss Army Knife, a Double Ended Screwdriver, First Aid Bandages, First Aid Tape and a Tire Pressure Gauge.

But there are other sections (elastic bands) that have nothing in them.

    HELP??????????????

BTW...........my umbrella has never been out of the case and the original owner still doesn't know where it was stored from the factory <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />.
