  1. Hello all, Besides the nice pieces of original memorabilia, my greatest and most spectacular treasure was found on my second trip to Hershey, just two years ago. We arrived early the first day and were just starting to walk down the first row in the swap area when my girl friend, out of the corner of her eye, spotted IT - an original rear bumper for my 1940 chevrolet sedan delivery. Considering that only 800+ sedan deliveries were producted in 1940, I never thought I would find one. If my girl hadn't been so excited by the find, screaming "Neal, come hear, look at this!!" I may have been able to negotiate the price downward. But no such luck. The seller knew he had me. Oh well, it was worth it.
  2. I agree with rbl2 - I pulled the engine and transmission as one piece on my '39 and did not have to drop the rear end. You can unbolt the torque tube from the transmission and there is room to slide it back. I don't see any reason why you can't pull the transmission out at that point to replace the clutch and main seal. Good luck!
  3. I got all the Packard parts I went there to get, and even a couple for my Buick. But the one thing that was my best find was an original 1940 Chevrolet Accessory booklet. That is why I just love going to Hershey - I always come across stuff that I can't find anywhere else, and once I find it I realize I can't live without it. Last year it was a rear bumper for my '40 Chev Sedan Delivery. They only made 800+ of these cars so to find a bumper in excellent condition was just the best.
  4. I think some of the problem may have been the fact that they were only accepting auction cars that were valued at over $10,000. We attended the auction on Friday night and at the time we were there it seemed like a rather full arena - maybe they were about finished when you arrived.
  5. I'd like to add my $.02 about this years' car corral - I think it was the best arrangement yet. I was able to walk around and investigate all the cars one after another without having to loop all around and backtrack. If it was up to me, I wouldn't change a thing. Hurry up Hershey '08!
  6. You guys have hit the nail on the head. This was our second year. This year we arrived early on Friday morning and were surprised to see that we had to park the farthest away! It was the first time we'd been "punished" for arriving early! The same thing happened Saturday. That time we were an hour later and got a better spot! But not as good as what those who arrived at noon! I thought most of the vendors were pretty mediocre. And golf carts everywhere! Pedestrians had no right of way at all. By Saturday, we decided we were going to walk in the middle of the driveways so they had to drive around us. And a multitude of times I was surprised at how the golf carts would BLOW their HORNS for the pedestrians to get out of the way - unbelievable. And did I mention there were no places to sit?? How about ONE water fountain? ONE restroom? If the men's room was a 5 minute wait, the women's line was a 30 minute wait. I wish there had been more cars and more quality vendors....guess I'll have to wait for Hershey.
  7. No problem, airbrushguy. Thanks for responding. Your car sounds great. To me, that's why this hobby is so terrific - to each his/her own. Some of mine are totally original and some are resto-rodded. Sure would like to see some pics..
  8. Maybe you can help ME with a question because Century and Special were so similar - in the photo attached of the shifter and clutch linkage do I have my bottom spring attached in the right location?
  9. Hello Arm49, Funny thing you should ask. I've been looking myself and wonder why it's so daggone difficult to find. I ended up going to Pro Bass shop and buying round cork fishing bobbers. Walla.

  11. Hi Lamar, Yes, that is a loft I built in the center of the garage/barn. It's great for storing things up out of the way but until I can figure some type of stairway, using a ladder is quite challenging for those larger items,i.e. fenders,grills, bumpers,etc. (you get the picture) <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />. I brought home my 80 gal compressor yesterday and I'm getting ready to install it today. Man, I just love these purchases that open the door to many new toys. Now I'm forced to go look at die grinders, metal cutters, sand blasting cabinets, and on, and on.....   12. MrEarl, I searched around and liked the air compressor you purchased so I ended up getting one myself from Lowes. The stores around me now only carry the 60 gallon air compressors, so I had to special order the 80 gallon version - it will be in next week. In preparation of my installation I would like to know what size breaker you put yours on so I can go ahead and run my wiring while waiting for the delivery.   14. I am in need of a part # off of the brass tag for my Stromberg carburetor, which came off of a 1940 Special. It is a 3 bolt carburetor and all I know is AAV167 is stamped on the body.   15. My first car was a 1970 Mustang Mach I. It was navy blue with black racing stripes. I had saved money to put Creager's on the back and it was FASSSSST! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> 4 Speed/351 Cleveland. My stepdad bought it for me on my 16th birthday. I kept it for a couple of years and ended up trading it in for a '73 Nova hatchback. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> I got $1500 on the trade in. I got rid of it (the Mach I) because my then-girlfriend didn't like my 'racecar' she liked the 'stupid Nova' better! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> What an idiot I was <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> - if only I had that Mustang today. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Thinking back now, I should have traded in the girlfriend and kept the Mustang. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

  17. Thanks for the replies. I don't think I asked my question correctly. What I'm hoping to find out is what kind of '39 Buick did my new engine come from? The gentleman I bought it from had a 2 door coupe special series 40 but this engine is different than my other 2 which were from series 40s also. I went and pulled the number off the small ledge and it's 440IbI74. Since the second digit is not a "3", am I to assume that this is not a '39 engine? What does the "IbI" indicate?   18. Hi All, I bought myself another '39 engine because I wanted to have the extra parts in case I needed them. When I went to pick the engine up, it looked a little different than mine (it had a Stromberg carburetor for one thing). I looked at the engine number and it's 1311572. The number on the engine I just put in my car and the engine I had that was cracked was 1303969. What does 1311572 indicate? Also, I am attaching a photo of the fuel pump on the "new" engine - how is this different than the ones I have on my current engine? Many thanks in advance for your help!

  21. Hello, I am in the process of assembling my '39 Special Mdl. 40 engine back together after a swap. Does anyone know if there is a tightening sequence for the exhaust manifold?   23. Thanks for the information Bill, that helps quite a bit. I've ordered from Bob's and several other places, but it's always nice to be able to go pick up a part quickly instead of waiting for delivery.
