Well, you saw the grill that I have so "perfect" this one is compared to mine. I also figured that if it needed to re-chromed, there would be a lot less work to do. Anyway, how come you haven't told me about the perfect grills you have laying around?
Hopefully, it will be OK for a driver. These things always do look better in pictures though.

Ah well, this is supposed to fun...not a complaint session.I'd rather just worry about looking for parts and figuring out how to get my cars on the road. And speaking of eBay.....hey Lamar....why did you let me win that almost perfect 1/2 of a '54 grill? Or for that matter, how come Mr. El Diablo let it go? This is good for me since I just won it. Now watch, I'll duplicate Derek's eBay luck! Well, I do have to say that eBay has been good to me with De Soto and Buick parts so far. But not cheap!

I hereby remove my remarks concerning this post. Sorry, I was coming to the defense of my Canadian brother. I think this thing started a little too personal...and for the most part....I'm sure most of us are OK people...especially since we're Buick heads, except for Dave of course.......only kidding!!!
So to Mr. Deltawing and Mr. Tri-Shied....happy Thanksgiving! And for that matter, happy Thanksgiving to all of us!! It's great to be alive!!!

Deltawingflyer: What the heck does Derek's article have to do with low membership??? And membership of what in particular? I would submit that quite possibly you may be the cranky one here, especially if Derek's article upsets you so much. Oh, I forgot, the Bugle should contain only happy articles from happy Buick people with happy stories about all of their happy experiences buying and restoring old cars. I guess maybe some of us didn't know that that the Bugle, and I guess this forum, is supposed to live up to the standards set by you and Mr. Tri-shield. Frankly, I think both of you need to find something else to do because if this is so upsetting to you, your lives must really bite!

Dave:
I missed a pic that I need to send to you. On my way back to the junk yard to pick up a 322, that I'm not supposed to pick up, I'll try to remember to get the shot. I'm sure you will love this one. And, I'll give you a hint, it's not a Buick, and it does not have wheel, at least rubber ones.

Now, Mr. Thriller, that was an "I gotcha"....and a very good one at that. Caught myself with a big foot in there. Someone pointed out to me, and rightly so, that the three most beautiful motors are Nailheads, Hemi's and Flathead Ford V8's. I have to agree, and every time I see one, I want it. Now, I've just been offered a small hemi for my De Soto and then this motor pops up. What's a poor boy to do but buy 'em. Mr. E does all the time. Then tries to sell the parts to me!
And Willie, you are correct. But, I have a question. The 322 I'm looking at is a Special. So, the compression is less and it's a 2 barrel. Was the compression increase on the 4 barrels from pistons and the heads are the same on both the 2B and 4V motors?

My deflated $.02. I think $188 isn't bad for a 32 page large brochure for 1941. I mean, junk is $25 - $50. And it costs me at least $110 to fill the truck, and that's only good for a week. I have now discovered that you "gotta pay to play". Just found out my '54 grill is $2,800 to re-chrome (not going to do that). My 1950 Buick bumpers are $3,000. It's a $950 for a rebuilt Stomberg 97 (if you were working on a flathead), and my ex wife wanted $000,000's just to move out 17 miles away! I bet you won't see many of those brochures around either. Remember, the object is to die broke!

Well, in my never ending change of mind, I found a '56 - 322 sitting in a Special in a nearby junk yard. I was actually there looking for stuff for my De Soto. But, that's another story. Anyway, I popped the hood and there sat a complete motor with air cleaner still attached. In a junk yard.... well that's rare. So, I started thinking about my '54 project. Anyway, the yard wants $350 for the engine. Sounds high to me. Now I know this one would need a total rebuild. But probably no more than what's sitting in my '54 now. So, is it worth $350? Well at least I don't have to get it shipped. That's an easy $350 right there. I just hate to leave it there. Saw some incomplete 364's and maybe a 401 too. OK, better choice, right? Is there any possibility that a 364 or 401 will come close to bolting up in my '54? I know the answer to that without asking. Oh, and will my '54 - 4 barrel manifold bolt up to the '56?
My purists side is sitting on my shoulder right now....but my resto/mod side is getting loud again. So, if I had a completely restored '54 Roadmaster with a '56 engine, would I have killed the value? I'm already taking a Super and making it a Roadmaster; trading VIN and ID plates; and nothing matches numbers wise. Did I just answer my own question?
I know, just do what makes you happy. Am I happy yet?
Thanks! Gary

At the nationals this year I was admiring an Auburn and it's color. I inquired about the color and was given the name (I think) "Harbor Mist Grey". I have not been able to turn up an Auburn color of this name from the '30s. Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks!

Yes you did. In fact "Bobo", my De Soto is way more depressing that Dorothy! But a good car to develop my metal shaping skills!!! Anyway, thanks. Now if I could only get past....one day in the garage....two days to recuperate.....one day in the garage, etc!

The more I dig into "Bobo" the more I find he's been eaten away. Just pulled off the drivers door and it seems that the bottom of the A pillar (what else would you call it - lower cowl?) is dangerously close to being completely eaten away. This is structural stuff. So, just wondering if any of you have tackled this problem? And if so, how?
My passenger side top door hinge pin was also eaten away by rust. I've never seen that before.
Thanks!

Stevo: The was funny. You're making me hungry.
Anyway, to get way off topic, I was working on my De Soto last night and I realized my Buick's are not that rusty at all compared to this one. There's a whole lot a car missing there. Anyway, Dorothy and Frankie are still waiting patiently. I'm planning on getting Dorothy off the frame in the next few weeks. Gotta move some stuff around in the garage.
Dave: Posting pictures all the time on my blog and gallery. Best place to look. And, thanks for all of those pictures of your toys. I'm humbled!

Stevo: With a last name of Noubarian, you can bet that Lamb runs in the blood. Ask Mr E. We enjoyed some two weeks ago when he delivered "Frankie"! And yes, Lewiston is a nice little place. Gary

Stevo:
Maybe I'll read where you are located before I ask where you live. Old age...must be....old age!!! Anyway, I'm in Lewiston about every three months. Love it there. Lived in the Falls till 1960 then moved to Lewiston. Left when I went to school in NC. I'm planning on buying a place there one day. Love being on the River.

Mr. E:
I bought a set of new wheel cylinders on eBay cheap. The rebuild kits are cheap too. Can't wait to see what you use to get the brake springs back on. My tool never worked correctly -- el cheapo Sears stuff. It was either that or Cars send me springs that were about 1/4 " to small.
Not sure if you have this item, but someone reminded me on this very forum to use what I forgot I had gathering dust in the corner...a pump operated brake bleeding system. Attach to the bleeder valve. Pump it up. Open the valve and watch the fluid come out. A lot better than having Rita sit in the car and pump the peddle. Although, I think the old fashion way still works best.
There are different color fluids so on the Vette, when I really wanted to clean out the system, I would start bleeding using a different color fluid. When I went from clear to Blue, I knew I cleaned out that section of line.
On the '50, the old fluid was anything but clear so I didn't have any issue seeing the new stuff come out. One thing I found on the '50 is that it takes a lot of bleeding once you pulled the wheel cylinders. And Bob is correct, turn the adjusters until there is quite a bit of drag, then back off until the wheel turns freely with just a little bit of drag.

Well, no need for hinges. I found them . The hood rusted off the hinges. My De Soto inexperience is coming through. I just never thought of a hood rusting off the hinges before. But then, he's a rust bucket, that's for sure! Gary

Well, not really broken, but that's another story. Questions first:
1. The metal behind the clear plastic lens with the MPH numbers is gray. Before trying to match the color, does anyone know what color gray this is? Same for the turquoise line underneath the numbers. I don't supposed it would be as easy as calling someone and asking for '54 Buick gray speedometer paint, and some turquoise too.
2. There is a plastic lens over the odometer. Taking the clear plastic MPH lens off was tense enough. I'm afraid to pry on this very much. Has anyone taken this piece off and if so, how?
3. And if anyone has a spare odometer/trip wheel, and would like to part with it, please let me know. On the dumb scale of 1 -10, with this being a 10, I was trying to clean up some of the rust on the rod that the odometer and trip meter spin on and, while doing so, managed to scrape off a bunch of numbers. I don't want to tell you how I managed that.
Thanks!

Dave:
I'm having lots of fun! And I thought I was doing some back breaking work! I think I'll do as you and start from the bottom and work up.....as soon as I get rid of one of my parts cars. Sometimes just taking a sazall to a problem is a great stress reliever. I wanted the gauges from one of the parts cars. So I started out unbolting things in an orderly fashion. But, I hate being inside this thing since it's so funky. Well, I figured, why not, get the saw and hack away. It was fun and I learned how the dash is installed.
Serb: I grew up in Niagara Falls. How close are you to that awful place??

Dave, yes you are crazy! And I thought I had BIG issues with fenders sitting around, while you need cranes to lift your parts. Gary

I'm in Maryland and will be at junk yard picking up a 401. I think I saw a 364 sitting in one of the cars. If you like, send me your cell number and I will call you when I get back to that yard. I should be there sometime this week. I can also click a pic or two.
Obviously, there will be no way to be sure that the block is good. I'm hoping the 401 I plan to pick up is OK.
