  3. packardv8 your exactly right. i did exactly what you suggested this morning before i read these posts, and it worked. i let it run for a while in neutral and turned it off. then i put it in reverse and hit the starter then changed gears and hit it again and it freed up. took it for a ride and it seems fine. your also right about putting it away hot and left it in gear. i won't do that again. any idea what happened and if it will happen again? should i plan on changing the clutch soon? thanks for all the posts.
  4. i have been away for about 3 weeks on business and when i tried to start my 49 packard it looks the clutch is gone. it was in reverse with the clutch pushed in and lurched backward when i hit the starter. i can change gears but the clutch won't disengage in any gear. everything was fine last time i drove it and i haven't noticed any trouble shifting. I jacked it up and looked at the connection to the transmission and everything looks good. anyone have any ideas?

    gas tank sending unit

Rick, the needle does not move at all and is pointing to empty. I have not removed the tank yet, but i think this probably the next logical step as soon as i use up some of the gas in the tank. the wiring from the sending unit was dry and cracked and i taped the exposed portion i could reach. Thanks to John (snopak) who posted a testing procedure in a seperate thread and emailed me as well. it is possible there is a short up higher on the wiring or the tank is not grounded properly. i should probably check this first to troubleshoot the problem. Howard, thanks for the info, and I'll check the packardinfo site for the service councelor you mentioned.

    gas tank sending unit

randy, sorry for hijacking your post but i have a related question. can anyone tell me a testing procedure for my sending unit on my gas tank or how to trouble shoot a fuel gauge problem. i have replaced all wiring and i recently replaced the gauge cluster and the other 3 gauges work. i have voltage at the gauge and running back to the wire at the fuel tank. the service manual has a procedure to check the gauge if you have a new sending unit by hooking it to the gauge. my next step was to buy a new one and do this but i thought i'd check if there is any other test i can try. also, can anyone recommend the best source of a new sending unit. thanks

    wheel cleaning

i have used Gumout engine cleaners on this type of hardened grease and found it works well. i also have a presure washer to use for cleaning like this after the gumout penetrates.
  8. this design looks much better. i need to replace the one on my 1949 and the view of the old unit looks similar. the firewall connection view of the new one looked much different. do you know who he got it from and the part # thanks
  9. i'm putting the heating system together on my 49 packard which was bypassed when i bought it due to a leaking heater core. i had the core repaired and figured i'd pressure check the temperature control unit. good thing because it has some rubber parts which stop water flow that have hardened and cracked and would leak under pressure into the passenger compartment. i dont think it will cause any problem if i connect the hoses directly to the heater core other than not being able to regulate the temp. anyone run into this problem before? is there any type of kit to fix this problem? i suppose there are available replacement units but the rubber on them are 55 years old. another question. this unit has a temp sensor rod and some springs in it so i assume it acts like a thermostat to reduce flow to the heater core as the temp inside the car increases. the parts manual has a diagram of the system but not much on the water system to it, does anyone have a diagram on on how to route the hoses? Thanks

    Winter Project's

twitch i've been away to north carolina for the last week or so and haven't checked in. the harness i got from ri wiring is great. one of the gauges (oil pressure) got messed up when i removed the dash to repaint and woodgrain. i broke the indicator and tried several ways to fix it including cutting one from an aluminum can. it does not read accurate however. i was too anxious to get it on the road in the spring to worry about them then. it will be fun working on the during the long new england winter.

    Winter Project's

i am presently working on getting the heat working again. i had the heater core re-built and i am installing a blower which i got with the car but is not correct so i am modifying it. then to find the correct 4" plexible tubing. most other projects involve left over electrical problems. two gauges need replacement and i have to figure out if the gas gauge or the fuel tank unit is the problem. i also have some fog lamps and spot lights which i got with the car that i may install. some excellent opportunities to escape to the garage when the time is right.
  12. paul, beutiful car and it is obvious you are very skilled and that you must have spent many hours restoring this car. i'm sure it is very satisfying to see the fruit of your labor. we're all impressed and envious.

    Stiff shifting

thanks for that tip on the lube point 49packard. i'll have to lube mine and see if it feels different.
  15. i have the same experience here in ri. i went to one of the biggest shows here in new england a couple weeks ago with over 1000 cars and there was only one other packard. it was a 1949 station sedan which was all original and in about #2 condition. IMHO, we had the best 2 cars there even though we didn't get trophies.
