  1. Not unlike parts of the North / Northeast, THINGS ARE PILING UP! After a predicted 6 inches we ended up with 8.89 inches this time! Our total accumulation to date is 68.8 inches and counting ! My backyard.. Really need to finish that roof for BBQin'.... You know you have truly great neighbours when they not only put in a gate but..... you blow out a path for them!
  2. After having loaded up the Snow Blower in preparation for an expected 6 inches more of the white stuff in the next 24hrs I went up in the rafters and pulled down a few more parts to get them ready the work ahead. Fortunately most of what I need is in one location (I think...) so will put things all together in an order that I think they will be needed. Panels behind the headlights (inner fenders) Headlight buckets I picked up at a swap meet figuring mine would be possibly rusted out like the headlight panels. New engine compartment wiring harness. New horn & headlight wiring..... Have not put my hands on the dash harness yet but it is there somewhere......
  3. Well dang it, I missed watching my thread hit 5,000 views yesterday! Thanks for the interest guys & gals! Busy yesterday getting the Snow Blower ready (gassed up, tuned up & greased) for our next round of snow tonight. On my way now to search through several boxes and find the binder Dad put together on the Whippet. Seems he has the paint information with colour code and maybe, just maybe, I can get lucky on the fix.
  4. Looking good Paul. What prep & paint did you use on your backing plates? As others have stated you have a nice solid car to work with and is going to be super when you are done plus the fact it is one of those timeless designs that just never look out of place.
  5. Hi & congrats on your acquisition. Being produced here in Windsor, Ontario isn't all that rare. At one time through the 80's different models of Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler were made at this plant as they shared the same base platform and dashes making it less costly for production. The plant is still here and assembles all the Chrysler Mini Vans since the St Louis factory has been closed. AND.......... Isn't this Forum great? To think you can connect to a previous owner (who might even have that trim you are missing)! I just love stories like this!
  6. r1lark, I'll very thankful that Dad is still able to enjoy the cars with us. He will be 90 in May and is still Membership Treasurer of our local Car Club and genuinely capable of doing the job. I should be so lucky ...... Just not going to tell him about the OOPS.
  7. THOUGHT THAT MIGHT GET YOUR ATTENTION ROBERT. Technically being south of you, you might have to change that to moving "down" there - ha ha. BBQ is GOOD anywhere! Heck I can even bring the BBQ. Hope getting settled in is going well for you both.
  8. Mr & Mrs Shadetree, As stated by all before me, Welcome to Michigan, however........... I came across this today and wondered..... are you planning to come to Canada?
  9. This is the Ford truck that is owned by the fellow who is mentoring me with mine. He did this work several years ago. It's in his shop due to a recent move to a newer house and lost his storage at home. Nothing a careful washing will not take care of. Talk about a blend of old and newer look. And another one of his projects. Wish my numbers would come up on the Lottery!
  10. Thanks for the kind words Paul. Putting this together has been a fun exercise (and easier than the work required getting things done - ha ha ) I woke up this morning to a temperature of -5 and a chill factor of -35 but understand that I'm NOT alone here! What a winter! So much for global warming........ In the mean time, doing a few things that need to get going, which are small and portable, over to my Dad's single car heated garage before the big push. I'd like to not be down all summer but ..... Here is the lower valance I acquired a few years ago with those fenders. I had stripped all the paint off to find this awhile ago. I have no experience with body work or welding and let it sit because of that but have another friend who is in the business (also owns a nice customized 50 Ford truck). He will do the final paint and is willing to guide me along with some of the prep work. You just never know what others have done till you uncover all that paint.....
  11. Yes West they are both metal trunks and the black one is the one I think I'm going to use. It will either be black again or body green but wasn't sure on my era / style Whippet which colour would be more correct. I'm guessing that because the other trunk has that slope it would be fitting close to a coach or sedan type body and therefore be painted to match the car colour? Whereas on a roadster or coupe it could go either way? Just looking for some opinions as I can't get her outside with all this snow to stand back and decide. (too much time on my hands I guess) Thanks for your thoughts guys.
  12. So, it has taken 20 posts to basically describe the journey with my truck these past 10 years and bring it up to today. It is my plan to get the engine swapped out, that front clip taken off and redone with the replacement fenders and other collected parts. Since it is soooo cold right now the actual restoring of the front clip, with not having any heat in the garage, it might take a month or two before I can actually get started but here is what I have to start with as of now; All tucked in for the winter at the back.
  13. OMG! OOPS........ Anyone besides me have this kind of luck?
  14. Here is the body coloured one (not correct style for this car though). This is the more square / rounded black one. Any suggestions?
  15. Looking for opinion as to what would be correct for my 1928 Whippet. I have a trunk that I think would be a correct size for my car but needs paint. I have another one that surprisingly is green like my car (still needs paint) but not the correct style as it has a tapered back to fit a sedan body style (I think). Which would be more correct for this era car, body colour or black?
  16. Robert, This has been around these here parts for a long time but thought you might get a kick out of it..... From a friend in Michigan. December 8 - 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow! December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life. December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor. December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Jeep. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all. December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel. December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room. December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the d--- stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. D--- snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbour kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying. December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to poop. By the time I got undressed, pooped and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying. December 23 - Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying. December 24 - 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a ***** who drives that snowplow I'll drag him through the snow by his hair and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the d--- snowplow. December 25 - Merry -bleeping- Christmas! 20 more inches of the darn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wondeful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave. December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the h--- did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves. December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me 1,400 to replace all my pipes. December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE ***** wife is driving me crazy!!! December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am? December 30 - Roof caved in. I caught and beat up the snow plow driver. He is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his a--. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted. December 31 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling. January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?
  17. Hey Rob, Not sure what is with Chrysler ballast resistors .... Just before I got married my wife had purchased a new 1978 Dodge Diplomat because her father worked at the Chrysler Plant here in Windsor, Ontario. It had to be changed out twice. Then we bought a low mileage 1979 Newport and it had the same issue. Then... we owned a 1981 Chrysler New Yorker and it had the same issue. Ironically, during that time when we bought our second home, in the garage were 9 ballast resistors sitting there up on a shelf! The previous home owner worked at Chrysler's so..... put them to good use when we needed to. Not about Buick's here but...... Cured that problem after the 3rd Chrysler..... I bought a 1992 Buick LaSabre!
  18. I have been hard at work coming up with some new words for all of this white stuff. Although, I do find myself repeating the tried and true words quite a bit. Is that all? You mean you have not woke up in your warm cozy bed, got up to look out the window, checked the thermometer and asked yourself, "WHAT WAS I THINKING?" It's OK Robert, by end of March it will all seem like a bad dream.......
  19. As we all know this hobby brings together many people with similar and yet varied interests in what their vehicles should be. While there are many examples of finely restored trucks and nice original ones, the general trend for this era vehicle is to modernize it with some sort of modern V8, 12 Volt system and disc brakes at the vary least. While I respectfully appreciate the ability of those that can make those kind of changes that work well and look really good, my choice is to enjoy the experience of how things were 'in the day'. Consequently, many times while at cruise-ins the conversations often come about as to why don't I make it more modern? On this one particular night I look over to my truck and see this fellow who is wearing a welders cap really studying the front fenders and he is in a wheel chair. I wander over and we start to talk. The usual subject comes up about changing the motor etc which he not only really likes but indeed has done for a few guys. It seems he had a body & paint shop at one time and there was an accident which left him disabled. Not to let this hold him back however does he not build (with some help) a 49 Ford truck for himself to be able to drive with custom controls he made! We go to his truck and it is a beaut! (I need to find those pictures) He says to me that if I`m determined to keep my truck stock that I should come out to his place as he might have some stuff left over from some of those conversion jobs. Sure enough a visit there proved not only worthwhile but found him to be more than reasonable with regard to price and a really nice guy! I ended up with a new complete wiring harness, set of horns, numerous items for tune ups, two new carb kits and a complete set of used chrome knobs for the dash controls. Then... he asks if I want a flathead motor? Uhhhmmm... mine is using by now a lot of oil and needs rebuilding so... ?? It seems he knew a guy that wanted to build a truck with a flathead but halfway through changed his mind and went with the modern V8. He says to leave it with him and will call me. I left that day with some anxiousness but kept telling myself 'remember your boat anchor'. Most of that summer went buy and I finally get a call to come and look at this motor. When I see it he has it hanging from his chain falls in his home shop and while dirty looking it is all there right to the carb and starter! The story was that this guy found it in a dump truck which the speedometer was showing only 35,000 miles. He supposedly managed to get it running before he pulled it out and later changed his mind about using it. Would I be willing to buy it for 200? While hesitating to say yes he says, "Look, I will guarantee you that you can put some gas to this thing and it WILL run!" Some times you just have that feeling when some one is out to sell you a bill of goods right? This was not one of those times as..... I took it home, hung it from my engine hoist, hooked up a can of gas to the fuel pump, ran a wire to the coil from a battery, jumped the starter and after the second attempt...... she came to life as promised! Not having hooked up any kind of rad it was all I could do to get myself to pull the coil wire while listening to it idle there before letting it get too hot!
  20. With having proven she can take a lickin' & keep on tickin' I enjoyed driving the truck over the next period of years when the urge hit me. Not however without that case of oil hidden under that box cover - Ha HA Following the 1928 Whippet & Dad home from the Willistead Classic Car Show Attending the twice a year Car Show at my local Car Club Managing to mix two hobbies, Although.... quite the experience having a stick shift on a boat ramp! Since I have a few properties to take care of (mine), once in awhile I hook up the trailer. More than once at a stop light I was asked the question, "Are you in a business?". No... just moving the trailer to storage. Hmmmm ......
  21. Nothing like a stick shift on a boat ramp........
  22. Thanks for the update. Welcome to our Great White North. Glad you made it. Fill us in with the details when your rested up. Been there, done that trip too......
  23. Guess I meant to say "north" of Dayton things look to be clear. The sentiment is still the same from all of us with interest, travel safely under those conditions.
  24. Well Robert, Being that you are still on the road you probably are not going to see this till later. It's 8:30 am and I see by the weather channels that Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati areas are getting 3 to 5 inches of snow and I-75 looks to be snow covered in stretches with paths for the tires. Sure hope you got through before it was too bad. Looks like from Dayton north should be clear but COLD! Be safe!
  25. That's a great period accessory for the car. It would be great if you could get the highway sign shown in the map. I've seen Kings Highway signs for sale in Barrie but can't remember which particular ones now.
