    Entertaining to watch though!

    YOU BETCHA! :D

I don't have pictures but... attended an Endurance Race Night near London, Ontario several years back and during half time, they held a "Run What You Brung" event.

The rules were no specific class and they allowed two vehicles (trucks or cars) to start side by side for two laps only and the first one across the finish line won 50 bucks!

Can't recall what the other car was but one was what appeared to be Mom's "new" Chevy sedan on the inside lane.

The flag goes down and the tires start squealing and turn one comes up! The Chevy starts a four wheel drift up the ever so slight asphalt bank and almost smacks the rails!! The car regains control and still ahead, races down the back stretch and again slides to the top but didn't quite hit. Now the other car is almost up to this obviously inexperienced driver so coming across the start finish line we hear the engine in this obvious stock car just a screaming!

This time his luck ran out on turn one and not only hit the guard rails with sheet metal complaining profusely but seemed to stall and he coasted down the turn to the lower rail while the other car passed, just missing a collision, and after stopping the guy gets out, walks into the infield and disappears.

The other car crossed the finish line to win and when it stopped after a victory lap to get the 50 bucks, turns out it was a 16 year old girl in what can only be described as a Junk Yard Rescue. Yea for her! :)

Just before the second half of the Endurance run began, the Announcer came on to say that the Chevy owner had disappeared from the property and the car he was driving had just been reported stolen from a local Dealership Lot earlier that evening!

Had I not heard it with my own ears I would not have believed it!

With the saying, time heals all wounds in mind, I'm not healed yet but after putting the Whippet away still on the trailer back in the car port and using my good outside car cover on her, have freed up a spot beside the Special and have used that to prepare my lawn equipment for the fast approaching grass growing season. With temps around 70 and last Thursday having hail and light snow, hope that is the end of winter! :P

My son was in the garage at home Saturday and decided to take advantage of the fact his dirt bike and his big a** rolling tool box was outside, leaving me access to the back of the garage.

Started wiping down the Limited of dust accumulated over the last year or so and found it very therapeutic.:)

I moved some things around at the back and realized there was my rear bumper I had purchased some..... years ago and looked like it needed some attention. :o

Set it up in the aisleway, gathered some rags and my chrome polish and went to work.

It is going to need lots more elbow grease but I can escape here and be in the house quick if needed!

  3. lancemb,

Looks like I'm striking out for an answer for you mostly because my 58's have a different knob/button than the 57's.

This is the one on my Limited.

And this is the one on my Special.

Guess I will have to defer to 57 Buick owners to help you.

Since the knob is spinning I understand why you would want to take it off as you need to have the shaft turn in order to have the dash light brighten or dim plus it controls the dome light when turned all the way.

Might I suggest since you have it out of the switch, apply some type of adhesive at the shaft (like JB Weld?) that after drying thoroughly might allow it to perform it's duties?

    Best of luck.

    Doug

  4. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SYMPATHIES AND KIND WORDS!

Not having met in person any of you yet is such an indication of the "Family" this Club has built. :) I look forward to putting faces to the names someday soon.

Sorry to be slow in responding, the out of town Family and friends stayed until yesterday (which was good for mom).

    {Doug, he'll always be there in spirit, right in the passenger seat.}

    Beemon,

You are so spot on with this and will be one of many cherished moments as indeed it was the first time he rode in the passenger seat of his beloved 1920 Overland at 85 years old.

Best Wishes & Health To You All.

  5. Where to start or just what to say..... today was a tough day.

With sunny skies and in the upper 50's we laid my father to rest this afternoon.

It truly amazed my mom and family the volume of relatives and many friends of his that came to pay tribute to Dad.

I did my part by finishing the car trailer on Thursday and loaded the Whippet on it to have it parked at the entrance of the Funeral Home knowing Dad would be proud of his car being there.

Everyone who knew him and had not seen the car but heard about it was touched!:)

  6. Thanks for the kind words.

It is indeed difficult but Hospice has been a wonderful experience for Dad and us so far (if one can say such a thing).

I did have to pump up the tires after I shot that picture. The car has been sitting in the garage (heated) for about two and a half years and was last started well over a year ago. Not sure what my sister will be planning on as she doesn't have a garage to park it in at home so..... I find where they live, being right on the edge of the Smokie Mountains, is rather damp so leaving the car out won't do it any good but... it's Dad's wish she has the car and will be carried through.

  7. Last week my sister and her family came up from Tennessee to see Dad due to his health and condition. With work obligations they went back home while my sister has stayed and Dad asked me to make sure his Corvair is in running condition as she will be inheriting it.

    IMG_1134.thumb.JPG.6adec4e116370ba680abbe9328a4f156.JPG

It is an amature restoration at best but with rebuilt engine, rebuilt automatic transmission and new brakes, once I charged the battery up and the twin carbs got fuel, off she went.

A few years ago he wanted the car painted and after some coaxing he convinced my son to help with sanding and do the painting there in his garage.

After it idled down decided to take it out and exercise the brakes.

    IMG_1127.thumb.JPG.4e5325356bcf4754f35d827a94f8bfdb.JPG

There are a few items needing to be put back on yet but with a little time that can be accomplished.

Since the car is mobile again decided to take advantage of the garage and clean up the car trailer (which barely fits! :o).

Sadly it is not wide enough to handle the Corvair without damage to the doors so my sister will have to look at other arrangements for transporting it back to Tennessee.

  8. What model 58 is your car?

The Special's don't have the wider molding on the door like the Roadmaster and the Limited's.

If you look at my small picture on the left you will see what I mean.

My Roadmaster has what appears to be the wider molding showing on your back door. There is a diiference on those models.

Doug,   looks like a very nice Buick to me. Thanks for the comments. I only have about a couple thousand miles on a new front end. I installed new ball joints, bushings,  tie rod ends and a rebuilt center link. I also installed  a new steering gear this past summer to replace the sloppy one  after I took the motor out this past summer and found it loosing lube from the worn shaft.   So I think my mind is set on the classic style radials. Thanks to everyone for your input and opinions. The attached photo was my summer project last year.

Gary, Thanks for your like of my car.

We all know pictures can hide sins and she has them but as Bernie says, I do for my car what makes me happy and that sparks a few discussions.

Great detail work under the hood!

Now, in keeping with the start of this thread on bias ply vs radials, how about a full side shot of yours with those bias ply's?

(especially since we share the same red paint and white tops :D)

I was getting at the idea that what I do is what makes me happy. That's the goal. If I wasn't happy with my car I would change what it took to make me smile. I don't need radials.

Agree with you on this 100% Bernie! :):):)

If you want to swing across the border and try my 8.20's on your Buick this summer, you have a open invitation. Just to test it with the ball joints and alignment. I put a mid-rise lift in the garage last fall, should only take 20 minutes. I'm 60 miles east of Buffalo.

Actually, I have a set of L78 15's (bias ply) that likely will end up on Limited when (at some point ) it goes on the road. They are used so will only be used cautiously around town and not on the expressway till it becomes necessary. However, would love to take you up on the invite as an excuse to exercise the Special once I get those brakes finished......

    Hello All,

I am replacing the tires on my 58 Buick Special this year.

MOST tell me it was the best decision they made switching to radials and others say that the suspension on these cars were not made for radials and your ride will worsen?  Any thoughts on either side of that would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,  Les

    Les,

I can speak from both sides of this issue since having started out with correct size bias ply tires (two sets) and then going to radials the ride is indeed better with the radials. I'm sure it also helped greatly that I put on new upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends with an alignment with the new tires.

I don't think I would return to bias ply unless restoring my car for show and judging.

As you can see she will not qualify for preservation awards so just planning to enjoy the ride.

    Doug

  12. I always wondered just how turning back an odometer was done. Obviously no one sold a machine "on the shelf" to make it widely known otherwise everyone would have been doing it.

During the late 70's or early 80's here there was a used car dealer that eventually was caught and charged doing it to some of the cars on his lot. Soon after he started selling new then used RV's which he then was caught turning back the odometer on a few of the used ones.

The place is still there today but not sure if the same family is in ownership, avoided looking at anything there just to be safe!

I remember your dad from when he showed your Whippet Cabriolet long ago.  I think I have an old photo of the car and he in Chatham.

My roommate from collage drove a '55 Special sedan and that is how it began for me.

Attended the SWO Flea Market this morning in Essex, didn't purchase much but had a good breakfast in their diner.  Best regards, Gary

    Thanks Gary.

    Appreciate the recognition.

Did you see the Whippet after it was done, during or before?

Good thing the Flea Market is indoors with this wind and change of temperature today right!
