  2. Sending out an updated request for information. Thanks to Art Anderson ( Aanderson44 ) for pointing out and questioning a really poor description of my uncles car ! I should'ed looked a lot closer, which I did. Here's a better description of this Ford coupe; The styling still says late 1940's, 2 door with no back seat ( just a shelf , no rumble seat...only a standard trunk, the hood badge says " Super Deluxe 8 ". The engine is indeed a flathead V8, the cyclinder head has " 58A-B " stamped on it. It does have an " X " frame and the trans shifter is on the steering colume. The hood narrows in the front to a rounded front, sitting above the fenders. Single headlight in the fender, and three grill openings running horizontally from turn signal to turn signal. The hood and the trunk are about equal in lenght. I know that's a crude description, we might yet find some paperwork about this car. My uncle's still living and may have some additional info. Thanks again for any comments. I'm still looking for info on the Ford V8 engine I have also ( See: my previous post " Need help in identifying Ford V8" ).
  3. I created a second posting, for some advise in indentifying a old Cadillac V8 engine. I don't know the history or condition of this motor. Do engine blocks have serial or ID numbers ? A little discription of the motor: flathead V8, alternator is located between the cyclinder heads, in front of the carberator ( Carter ). looks like its fuel injected ?? with fuel line coming into fittings on the top of the cyclinder heads, " Cadillac Motors " stamped into the heads, and what looks like a water pump on the RH cyclinder head !! It has a " Hydramatic " tansmission attached, but I dont see any shifter levers. I would guess this engine is 1940's or 1950's vintage. Could this be an power unit from a Navy PT boat ?? The family has always said Dad has a PT boat motor, but my understanding is, that those were large Allison engines. waiting to here back from anyone. Thanks.
  4. Looking for some tips on identifying an old Lasalle auto we have. It been stored on our farm ( in a barn ) for years. Are they identified by model numbers, or simple by model year. I was told its a 1939 model. Some features of this car : V8 motor, 4 doors ( " suicide " doors ), a small bussel trunk, a split rear window, and what looks like a manual/floor shifter. The hood and doors are hard to open, so I don't want to force them. For some background, please view my posting on the AACA general forum site under " What to do with a barn full of old cars ". Thanks.
  5. Looking for some general information on identifying a V8 engine. The motor is complete, but has been sitting in our barn for years. Please check out my other posting in the AACA general forum site ( What to do with a barn full of old cars ). I would guess it is from the 1940's or 1950's vintage. Its a flathead with the sparkplugs in the top of the cyclinder covers ( heads ). On top of the heads is stamped 8BA. I have no idea of use or condition. Are there engine serial numbers to be found ? Where would they be on the block ? Can you ID year, size, etc, from an engine ser.# ?? Any feed back would be appreciated. Also, could someone give me a short history lesson on early Food coupes. My uncle has a " Businessmans Coupe " 2 door with a V8 motor, a rumble seat and a spilt rear window. Maybee a late 1940's ??. As a kid ( 30 years ago ). When this car was outside, lots of guys stopped by the farn, trying to buy this car. Some said it had an " X " frame which was ideal for racing/customizing ?? Hope these clues help. Years ago, we moved this car inside, but it has sat for years and years. Thanks.
  6. Thanks everyone for you responses! We're getting lots of good imput. I thought I'd give everyone an update. The big " scrap vs. sell " debate is pretty much what I've heard from friends and others. I've also register with an antique farm equipment discussion website, and goten the similar advise. We hauled in another 3 tons of scrap iron on Saturday. We got $ 50 per ton, which is down from the high of $ 80 per ton. Once its chipped, sorted, and hauled out to the coast, then the price goes up to $ 200 -$ 250 per ton... than on a boat and overseas it goes. TO: Bob ( Indiana Truck )The Federal truck has been outside many, many years, and is very rusty. Here are some of the specs: Model# A6, Serial # 60614, Continential Motor # 16C-3899 6 cyl gas. The trans is a Federal and sits back from the motor ( conected by a propshaft ). There is 3 linkage on the top, coming from the shifter. I've spent some time looking for ID plates on the cars/trucks, but the list is not yet complete. I have no idea on year of manufacture, but may have serial numbers to go by. I haven't searched for titles or any paperwork for these vechicle(s). I've also found a couple of V8 motors. One is a Caddilac flathead, but very unusall configuration. The alternator in top center of the maniflod, just in front of the Carter carb, and it looks like the water pump is part of the LH cyclinder head. The other V8 is a Ford flathead and has " 8BA " cast on the heads. I'm stumped by one vechicle we've got. Its a panel van with dual rear wheels. Very faintly, painted on the drivers door is " Defense Plant Corporation - Bomber Plant - Willow Run. The truck is a Brooks Senior Vanette Model # 42 VS 13. Any feedback on this truck would be apprciated, the web search didn't come up with any useful infomation. Right now, we're leaning to selling everything, on a seperate sale date, at public auction. Once we get a further bit along. I create a detail list of what we'll have to sell.
  7. Bob, Checked out your website, I've seen pictures of old tractors hauled home in pieces and baskets, even with trees growing up through them, cases where you would never think there was a chance to bring them back. We'll have a couple of truck carcasses to sell, but a little later vintage. Sometimes I think the cutting torch is just sitting there, in the shop, ready to be used, but then I read ( and see ) total rehab/restoration than can be done, starting from those "basket cases", I chage my mind about slice and dice. One truck we have is a Federal model A-6 ?? Its down to a bare frame, motor, trans, rear duals, front axle, radiator, radiator shell ( w/ emblem ) dash and part of the rear hood cowell. I like your idea of selling at auction but with lots of directed advertising. The cars/truck and related collectible stuff will be on a seperate day sale, before the farm equipment. I'll have to find out how I can advertise on the forum. Some friend suggested forming my own webpage and getting a digital camara to put some photos . Then I could refer interested peolple to the website. What do you think of that suggestion?? I agree with you that advertising/selling piecemeal through E-Bay or privately, whould eat up way to much of our time. Thanks again for responding, I will be open to any suggestions and responses from forum members.
  8. I'm looking for some general advise on how best to find the value of and best way to sell several old cars and trucks I have. A little background first. I will be cleaning out over 60 years of farm equipment and collectable from my father's estate. We are farmers located in Southeast Michigan and will be having a general public auction in August 2004. Dad never got rid of anything so the barns are full. Plan " A " is to put thecars/trucks on the sale bill. Several friends have said this is a bad idea, we should try to sell them privately or by bid. Their concern is that anyone looking to buy privately will only offer unreasonalbe low offers, which may be the case, since I have no idea what would be a reasonable offer. the condition of these vechicles range from poor to bad, they have not been run since I can remember. Some have been stored under cover but on bare dirt floor. Some of the vechicle are: 1939 Lasalle 4 door, REO Gold Comet stake truck, 1942 Jeep CJ2A, 1962 and 1963 Mercede sedans ( 1 diesel ) 1950's (??) Chevy 4X4 2 ton stake truck . 1). Should we take our chance on a auction if we advertise to collectors and hold the auction on a seperate day from the farm equipment ? 2). get an appraisal and offer for sale by private sale or bid ? 3). Advertise and sell by classified ad? 4). Something else. We're not looking to get the highest dollar, but don't want to give the stuff away either. Any suggestion(s) anyone can offer will be appreciated. THANKS !!
