  4. There's a gentleman who want to change his 1937 Oldsmobile straight eight's standard 3 speed transmission to a 1951-1953 Oldsmobile Dual Range Hydra-Maitc transmission, Will a 1940 to 1948 Oldsmobile straight eight Hydra-Matic bell housing and flywheel interchange ?
  5. is the leak a small or weeping one ?, you might the GM approved radiator sealant that made from ground up ginger roots, the stuff works great, I hope you're running the original style pressure cap, 4 lbs ?
  6. the contacts inside your turn signal switch and lever assembly may be worn out enough to have created trails inside that causes both dash indicator lights to light up together, I believe the same setup was used from 1949 to 1952.
  7. a lot of times the part number listed in the Pontiac Master Parts Catalog, and the part number shown on the part itself, is off by one number.

  12. all Pontiac models 1949 to 1954 used the same hood springs.
  13. might be the 1942 Pontiac clock delete emblem that fills the hole in the dash or glove box lid.
  14. the fluid coupling has a drain plug of it's own, I recommend draining the case and the coupling, getting a new pan gasket so the pan can be removed to clean out sediments if any in the pan, and to remove, clean out, and blow dry the tran's screened fluid filter, put it all back together, pour in 7-8 quarts, start engine, let it idle, add more till you have poured in 10 quarts, then as you slowly add the 11th quart, keep checking the fluid level and STOP when the stick reads FULL, DO NOT OVERFILL just because some of the 11th quart is leftover. with engine still running, move the gear selector slowly from Neutral to reverse and back several times, check fluid level once more.

Sort of, Dad bought me my first car in real late 1972, I wasn't involved in him getting the car, it was a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Sport Sedan (four door hardtop) with just a 235 six and power glide 2 speed automatic, after driving it for six months the head gasket failed, causing to run rough, I was saving up my money to pay for the repair, $40.00, but came home from school and the car was gone, Dad decided he would sell it since it was just sitting except for being moved on Monday and Tuesday to avoid street sweeping parking ticket, Well Dad said I was going to buy all my cars since I "tore up" the Impala, but whatever I selected to buy couldn't be powered with a V8 engine, Thanks Dad, Not knowing anything about old cars other than my Maternal Grandfather had bought new in 1947, a 1947 Pontiac Streamliner four door sedan, and then he passed away in 1950, six years before I was born, When I seen on a local grocery store's bulletin board a index card hand written, For Sale 1953 Pontiac, and a local phone number, So I was thinking well Grandpa had a 1947 Pontiac, maybe I would like a 1953 Pontiac, I went and found where Dad was selecting groceries for us in the store, and I asked him "what kind of engine does a 1953 Pontiac have ?, Dad answered " a Pontiac six or a Pontiac Straight Eight", Huh I asked "what is a Straight Eight ?", and he explained, and then I said "OK, that's not a V8" shaking a pointed finger at him, LOL, So we got home, I called the number, they lived about 4 blocks away, we drove over to see it, we walked to the back yard, and there she was, a 1953 Pontiac Chieftain Custom Catalina, a TWO DOOR HARDTOP, Yeah, Straight Eight, Power Steering, Dual Range Hydra-Matic Drive, a FOUR SPEED AUTOMATIC ?, Yeah, Guide Spotlight on the driver's door, lighted hood ornament, and the factory approved CONTINENTAL KIT !!!, I slipped onto the driver's seat, looking at this BIG 18" steering wheel, and the most beautiful car dash and instrumentation of all 1950s cars, Dad could tell that I was really liking the Pontiac, so he asked the Gentleman how much was he asking for the car, the seller replied how much would you give me for it ?, dad handed him three $50.00 bills, and the seller said You just bought a 1953 Pontiac, Two weeks later, when I got my paycheck from my job, I paid my Dad back his $150.00, and I made him promise, that he wasn't going to sell it when I wasn't home liked he had gone with the Impala, When I turned 18 in January of 1974, I went to the DMV and put the Custom Catalina in my name. I still have this Pontiac Chieftain Custom Catalina today.

  19. this tool reminds me of a guy I've seen many times at Gordy's Used Car Lot in Santa Monica in the early-mid 1970s, the guy used this motor and wheel to slowly rotate the car's wheel and tire to clean the sidewall, then to cut a shallow flat groove in the sidewall, and last to paint a white stripe on the plain cheaper blackwall tires, Gordy would then raise the car's price now having whitewall tires. I worked there at Gordy's part time washing the cars on his lot.
  20. the older single range and dual range Hydramatics hold a total of 11 quarts of ATF, the fluid level is always checked cold or hot in Neutral with the engine idling, you do not want to overfill the level above the Full mark.

  22. in 1956, with Pontiac having both version of the Hydra-Matic transmissions, if you were buying a Chieftain 860 or 870 series model, you were offered the Dual Range Hydra-Matic option for $175.00 extra, if you were buying a Starchief, the Strato Flight Hydra-Matic was a $190.00 option, I don't doubt for one second, that many of Chieftain buyers were able to pay the $15.00 difference, and get a Strato Flight added to their Pontiac order.
