    Hi,

I believe that Mike West has, or had one .

    He's on the forum.

Bill, My grandfather paid $50.00 for the car in 1939 . The inflation rate since 1939 is a tad under 4% a year. That would be $1091.23  in purchasing power today. Im sure thats more than  a speculator would pay today. PS- Thanks  for helping out with that  twin six gas tank. Our friend has it cleaned up and on the car I believe.  Mike

I had an unusually productive day today...a change from the last few. I started by mounting the threading gauge/holding fixture for the hub caps on the lathe.

Then screwed the caps on one at the time and faced off the big hex.

I have to fit these two centers Mike West gave me. Originally they were crimped on to the pressed brass caps so I had to remove the remains of the edge below the crimp. They aren't actually the same size...one is 2-1/2" while the other is 2-3/8". I don't see that as a problem since I doubt anyone but me would notice that and I don't care.

I'll solder these in place and to do that I need to provide a relief of about .040 in the face. To do that accurately I located the center and used the indicator to move the tool post over the correct amount. I'll put in a flat-bottom groove with a cut off tool.

Then I cut the center out to the same depth. The groove allowed me to stop the travel before I touched the edge.

I set the measurements for this from the larger center but it came out a tiny bit too small so I used the smaller of the two centers on this one.

Then I repeated the process but, having some practice now, was able to get it right on.

I'll go on with these tomorrow. I need the mill and rotary table to drill the holes for the locking set screws but it was still set up to mill the crosses and I want to do the inside relief on the first good one I made. That will give me an extra. When I send out for the square holes I'll have this one done first so if an anything needs adjustment we won't be ruining the best ones. Chances are that won't happen but after all the work that went into it I can't see not finishing it.

As it turns out, I had a few problems. The mill table started vibrating...attributable to the end mill having gotten dull. Changing it without disturbing anything was a trick but I managed to do that and I'm on the last cut. I'll finish this in the morning and go back to the hub caps.

Joe, I suspect  that when the center discs were removed from the caps my machinist did not  go in with the smallest tool. He most likely didnt think they would be reused. At any rate they look great and glad you could use them. You are doing a remarkable job on your car! These centers are from 1910 caps. Mike

  3. Go ahead and register the car  as long as the serial number matches. Get it in your name..... Than  after you recieve the new title , go the the DMV  and showw them the problem. Its my experience that they are more than willing  to correct a small issue like you have . Make sure you take a picture of the VIN number with you. Good luck. Mike  PS Kill the clerk with kindness, it helps.

,   i picked on OSB because it's about 50 percent glue that is very flamable.   There were also two cars and a gas Gol Cart full of gas, two propane

bottles which all burned late in the fire when the flames got down low.   Particle board is cheap, but burns easily.

Paul, I hope you were nice to him and weren't mean when you discussed his choice of building materials!
