1. If it is the frame you need there is one in a SoCal boneyard, Some boneheads ripped up the interrior and exteririor fabric though. Hardtop is there too but it is upside down and a million folks have walked on it :-(
2. Hope the new owner is an enthusiast, are they local? Maybe they would like to come to our Shelby Dodge/turbo Chrysler meetings. Can you let them know them know about our growing base of enthusiasts? I have more info if anyone wants it.
3. Welcome to the TC forum Mr. D., your name seems somehow familiar I will commit to a set of studs and possibly one of your lightly used valve cover gaskets, mine seems to be a bit weepy on the 'new' project TC. Furthermore, I applaud your efforts to keep some of the rare parts available (at considerable expense it appears) to the enthusiastic Maserati TC owners who like to tune their cars for just a bit more power
4. Again Ghosty, my advice is to hold your car until better days, then you'll be glad you have an upscale car for weekends and cruise days.
5. I am still interested in the parts we discussed earlier, is that still pending? Email me off list if you need a review. SoCalShelbyGuy@earthlink.net
6. Jason, You'll find most of the ahem, 'senior members' on the TC list don't really care about going fast or making big power, but there are a few TC's out there destined for some track time 14.20 is pretty fast for a stock 89 VNT, don't you mean stock except for a 15 PSI computer and an exhaust? Which motor is in your TC ? Mine is new to me but it is getting a complete exhuast and a Grainger valve this week. Dyno day is Saturday and I will post the results but I'm betting they won't get very many reviews on this forum
7. Alright folks, I drive 40K+ miles per year here in SoCal so I see a bunch of cars. I also see at least 2-3 TC's a week, don't some of you want some local meetings or is once per year enough for you??? Don't make me follow after you on the roads, saw a guy the other day in a 91 (airbag car) triple black, I think he was wondering why I was looking at his car so hard
8. I have been down and out too but you have an advantage, you have a usable skill!! If you really just need transportation, I did a Recycler classifieds search and found 6 running Toyota trucks under $500. I only searched one brand! There are plenty of useable trucks out there cheap, borrow the $$ or put it on a credit card and GO GET THE WORK YOU KNOW HOW TO DO. Then, when the money comes in, drive and enjoy your TC and be glad you couldn't find a buyer. When you do start enjoying your triple black, bring it to our Shelby Dodge/turbo Dodge/FWD Chrysler meetings. You won't be the only TC there!
9. Well my new toy needed some new shoes so in keeping with the every modification should be an upgrade thoery, I did some research on tires available in 15" Now if Mr Iaccoca and DeThomaso had seen fit to give us 6.5" rims instead of 6" 225 tires would have been an option but I have tried them on other 6" rims and though they will fit, they make the car handle squirmy and wallowy. I found that there is a single tire manufacturer that make s 215/55/15 tire (Kuhmo). What it translates to is 1/2 inch more width but since you are dropping from a 60 series tire to a 55 series, you get a slightly shorter sidewall (better for handling though not as plush of a ride) in this case only 1/10th of an inch, not enough to give the car a harsh feel. The Kuhmo Ecsta 711 tires are on sale right now at Tire rack for $50. each. They are ordinarily a $90-$100 tire. Most of the major tire chains (like Tire America) will price match to Tire Rack's price, but them once you tack on shipping/mount/balence I think I got out the door for like $339. The TC LOVES IT"S NEW TIRES! They are a good match for the chassis and are within 1.4% of the correct rolling diameter, they will revolve 830 times in one mile verses 817 times for the stock 205/60/15, so they are just a hair smaller. Get em while they are on sale, no other manufacturer makes this size!
10. Aw c'mon, at least 5-6 of the regulars are Riverside folks. Heck, one guy even drives every month from 29 Palms! That's an enthusiast
11. So I have been networking a bit since my TC purchase trying to find other enthusiastic TC owners who want to have some 'get together's with TC related discussion. Since I can't find anything about events (other than our national in Laughlin) I want to extend an open invitation to any TC owner to come to the Shelby Dodge/turbo Dodge meetings that we have been having monthly for more than ten years. After all the Shelby's and the TC are practically 'cousins' sharing more than a few drivetrain parts etc. We meet the first Thursday of the month at Applebee's resturaunt 1238 W. Imperial hwy, La Habra CA 7;30 pm. You will see a couple of TC's and loads of assorted Shelby Dodge/turbo Dodge cars tucks and vans parked on the bank side (Washington Mutual) of the resturaunt
12. I will have to call my parts guy next week to get the number and availability. He has been ordering my Chrysler/Dodge parts for me for more than 15 years, if he can't find it, it doesn't exist. Too many parts counter guys just give up if the computer says NS1. Also ordered this week a 16V head gasket and 16V cam belt, both items said NS1 on the computer.
13. Rich, I spent more than a few minutes searching for that page, I found lots of new info on our cars, but darned if that page comes up again? Maybe another meber has seen it, I know it was written by one of 'us'
14. Um let's see, 10 of you have veiwed this post and not one is willing to open their trunk and look inside for a another member??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Is this list about gathering/relating experiences/information for other members or did I get the wrong idea
15. I bought a right front from the dealer for $24. on Tuesday, I have not laid eyes on it yet though, maybe it's the right piece, maybe not but my fingers are crossed. Welcome to the club, you have owned your TC one day longer than me
16. So I am getting familiar with my 'new' TC, mostly cleaning, cleaning, cleaning! The 'mature' gent who owned it kept it completely original, but was not fond of maintenance or cleaning so after two MORE days of daily scrubbing it should be sano. The only modification at all was an early cell phone installed in 12/89. The huge (by today's standards) tranciever unit is mounted in the cargo hold so that came out along with way too many wires that were run under the driver side carpet trim. Most of those are out now but there are three suspicious thick wires left under there and they run from under the dash to the trunk and splice in to the power antena feed. Thing is, I can't tell if they are supposed to be there (factory?) or part of the phone system? Can someone take a peek behind their trunk carpet to see if three large gauge wires lead to the antena, one is orange one is green and one is yellow and they are twisted together along thier whole length. Thanks in advance. BTW, I paid up and joined the club today after two days of TC ownership, what a great source of information! Thankfully Karleen warned me about the convertable top stowage/glass breakage issue. Alas, I have not even seen my soft top yet and really have no idea what kind of shape it is in
17. Bummer!~ It's been well documented that if any of the fabric on the top 'bunches' up on one side, the pressure from the support rod against the tonnou cover can break the glass. Hope you can find one before the weather warms, BTW where does it get warm in March?
18. The opera window fogging is an 'easy' fix. I have not done it but read instructions on a web site somewhere about removing the windows, separating them and removing the old laminate. It sounded easy. Don't know about the struts yet, I will do mine in a few weeks.
19. For a couple years I have been keeping at least one eye open for the right TC to happen my way. Found the perfect example right here on this fine list. Who cares that it was 500 miles away and I would have to buy it sight unseen then depend on it to get me home in time for work the next day. It did just that and gave me over 26 MPG at 80-85 MPH the whole way from San Francisco to Orange County. Yes there was talk of initially parting this one for it's increasingly rare twin cam powerplant, but rest assured it will be restored to it's original luster and just may pick up a hundred or so HP in the process. So I will be shopping the list for interior parts and a few trim bits. Hopefully I can contribute some worthwhile list traffic along the way!
20. Yeah, I read Russ's study a couple years ago, scared the dog out of me! I was still just grabbing whatever fliter off the shelf that was cheapest. Nowadays I spend the extra $ and get one of the top three he reccomended. Also there are some filter magnets out there these days (www.filtermag.com) that actually seem to trap extra ferous particles. I'm using one on a motor but haven't cut into it yet to see for myself.
21. Sigh, sounds like all the nice cars in SoCal are non five speed. I am continuing my quest in search of the right car. Found one yesterday at the Crystal Cove (Laguna Beach) car show, alas another clean lo mi auto car. Seems I'm looking for the needle in a haystack.
22. That VR4/3000 GT motor is WAY TOO HEAVY, infact most performance magazines agreed it's the reason why the car was not very successful. Instead of trying to make the next to impossible fit, why not just use what already does fit? The SOHC turbo 2.2/2.5 motors a very capable of 350+ HP heck there are even a couple over 400HP. Boneyards are loaded with them. The best choice would be a 89-92 'common block' motor. Upgrade the injectors/turbo/intercooler and you are on your way to plenty of power for your chassis. I have had my fill of making the impossible fit, my Rampage now sports a TIII (16V Lotus) motor and everything had to be custom to make it work. The Maserati 16V motor in the GLHS was easy compared to the Rampage.
23. Hey Gang, No I don't have a TC yet but have been looking (16V cars only) for the right one to come along. I have built a TC style powerplant using only a cylinder head from a twin cam motor as a start. It is running after four years of work but still needs fine tuning to meet the 400+ WHP goal. in the meantime (and since I don't have my TC yet) I will be mostly lurking here and checking the classifieds. I am in Orange County, CA, with wife/kids/lots of turbo project cars. Thanks for having me
24. If by 'Chrysler 4 cylinder' motor you mean the single cam motor, I know a place where 25 turbo Dodge enthusiasts get together every month. It's the Shelby Dodge club but all variations of turbo Dodge etc are welcome. We meet the first Thursday of the Month at Applebee's resturaunt 1238 Imperial Hwy, La Habra. Lots of us work on the cars to support the fellow enthusiast. For January (because of new years) we will be meeting the second Thursday of the month, 7:30 pm. We have actully had three TC cars at a single meeting, not too impressive but it's a start!
