  1. HI, I finally got over to look at this car. The temp gauge on the dash is all over the place, moves around but finally does go over to the hot side. Car does not boil, I put a thermometer in the neck of the radiator and let it idle on a hot day, it never gets about 160 or so, when shut off it moves up but then a re-start brings it back down. I told him I think it is the gauge or the sender, what do you guys think? No leaks from the pumps, the only indication of overheating is the gauge. Looks like the sender is easy to replace, are they available locally? thanks for your replies.
  2. thanks for your replies, as far as I know it just runs hot. He just assumed water pumps, I will check into it a little more. Are the thermostats in the radiator hose? Thermostat is the first place I would look. I don't think the pumps in there now leak, he just assumed--thanks
  3. Hi, my neighbor has a 41 V-12 and is having cooling problems. He bought kits to re-build the water pumps but he does not know how to do it. Does he need to send them off to a specialist for the rebuild or can someone local rebuild them without specialized knowledge. Do you need a press etc to get the job done. I don't know where the kits came from or have any other info, I am just trying to help him get this car going so he can enjoy it this summer. thanks, Dave

    update

Dropped off the head this morning and here are the results--magnafluxed, no cracks. The machinist said that the head had a "funky twist" in it and he had to take off .012 (twelve thousands) to make it flat. Will check on the valves etc this weekend. I ordered a new head gasket.

    update

Hi everyone, I bought Stans Desoto. I got it to fire, but not run. Spark was not consistent so I pulled distributor and adjusted, filed points and put in a new condensor. Still not running so yesterday I pulled the head, haven't looked closely yet but I don't see anything that stands out that is wrong--no holes in pistons or anything like that. I really need more time to see if I can figure out what is going on. I am going to check the head and see if it is warped and clean things up to start--I will update when I know more--
  7. Putting some oil in the small hole worked on my car, a few years ago I got in it and the shifter was stuck--I was afraid I was going to have to tear things apart and then I saw that little hole. I put some oil in there and after a few days it started to work and has been fine since. Several times a year I put 4 or 5 drops of motor oil in there and it does the trick. I'm sure it doesn't solve al the problems but it sure worked for me and it is easy- 22nd series Deluxe Eight
  8. Are you sure it is a throttle? Maybe it is Overdrive?
  9. Thanks for the replies, this car was restored--There is nothing under the hood now and that is the easiest place to start. I have some black dynamat type stuff that I will help him with in the next few days. Not sure about the firewall, carpet etc but will check on that as well. Thanks
  10. Hi everyone, this question is related to driving so thought I would ask. My neighbor has a 41 Continental and thinks it is noisy when driving the car. This car doesn't have any insulation under the hood, was there insulation there when the car was new? Are there any other areas that we might check to see if we can quiet this down? I have other cars from the 40's and this V-12 is noisy compared to them. Any suggestions? Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the info, he is having the car looked at by someone who knows these cars, hopefully he will get it squared away.

    Vacuum

Hello, my friends 41 v-12 is still running poorly, what should one of these motors make for vacuum? His is only showing 13, seems low to me. Thanks, Dave

    Won't restart!

I was able to start it right away with a little shot of starting fluid. It usually starts cold without any problem. I have an electric fuel pump on it and since it started and ran fine after the shot of fluid I figured it must be carb related, I guess I need to rebuild it. It is last years gas but I did put stabilizer in it last fall. Thanks for all suggestions

    Won't restart!

Thanks for the reply, I'm sorry but I don't understand how sticking points in the voltage regulator would cause this? Can someone explain this briefly to an "electrically challenged" person? Thanks

    Won't restart!

Hi everyone, my 22nd series car runs fine most of the time. Today, I had it running and shut it off off for less than a minute and it wouldn't restart. It is about 55 degrees out and the car was not hot so there is no reason to suspect vapor lock or anything like that. I sprayed a shot of starting fluid in the carb and it fired up and ran fine. What would cause this? Bad carb? Thanks, Dave
