  1. Shape of the groove that locks into the rim. One is a square section, the other is square on the back side and angled on the front side facing out. Learning the difference the hard way will kill you. Use caution. If you need help, pm me pictures of the ring close up.

    BTW, the first 2 antique cars my dad bought were Pierce Arrows, but someone arm-twisted him into selling them probably before I was born.  

     

    I like you how you describe yourself as a mechanic.  I couldn't claim that - but I took as much care of our cars as I could as a teen.  Kept the one Packard running, got the P1 limo running (my fav was removing both carbs so they could be sent off for rebuilding).  When they came back, reinstalled them, then learned the famous 'trick' of starting a warm P1 without using the starter motor.


    Nothing better than the famous PI free start.

     

    Post some photos  of your fathers cars please……always interesting to see them back in the old days, and we can probably locate a few of them for you.

    Faulty logic……..I only work on pre war stuff…………pre World War II, I never work on anything that is pre Peloponnesian war……….😝

    I’m sober.  It’s not Ed’s car. It’s a work car. This particular one is about as world class as you can get and is still on the show circuit. When the shows are done…….it will get driven hard. About 1/3 of our cars are still new or just on the circuit. 1/3 are super hi point drivers……….and 1/3 are plain drivers. Steve will confirm the “plain” drivers I take care of are still exceptionally nice. I only own one 100 point car myself………which is currently probably only 98 points until we do some clean up. Most of my stuff is driver or original HPOV stuff. But I do have 25k on that 98-100 point Pierce………so, yes I drive them…….long and hard. 
     

    My sober witty reply to Steve M? He has more reproduction and aftermarket replacement  parts in him than our cars in the collection do! 😎 So, it’s fair to say Steve is NOT ”strictly stock!” So any car he shows should get mandatory non authentic parts deductions. Maybe I’ll start calling him “Mr - 20 points!”

    Without trying to sound obnoxious, if you own a Pope, and don't know where to get it fixed..........you have bigger issues than starter problems. They are fantastic cars.....but certainly not for beginners.  It would be my guess that it is probably an "added" starter and not factory. The 1910 Pope we had used a modern Cub Cadet starter. Photos would help a long way in pointing you in the right direction. Most all skilled shops and service people are two to three years out..........so it's likely you will need help, or you could end up with major headaches if some tractor mechanic try fixing it.

    We are cleaning up the Packard Custom Dietrich this weekend for it's next show.........anyone who wants to clean a perfectly clean car already please stop by and help. We need tire tread detailers, under car chassis detailers, and chrome polishers.  Figure 60-80 hours of professional detailing for a car that is literally already spotless........it's what we do. Yup, we are nuts.

  8. Looks like a very nice car. Charge the battery  if you know how and can do it safely. It’s 6 volt positive ground. If it ran a year ago, the gas doesn’t need to be drained. With that system it will run on old gas better than most cars. Put 45 psi  in the front tires, 40 in the rear. The rest should be easy. Post a few photos under hood on the drives side……..I need to see if the car is stock. Looks like it probably is. Also, when you call, anyone who has any knowledge about it in the past would be helpful.

    'The sorting is finished" until it isn't. We knew we needed to replace the freeze plugs......but held off for other things............the car made the decision for us today. We had the plugs in the trunk of the car and had them for the list in July when it's too hot to drive down here..........unless you're testing your cooling system. Half are already done...........road trip Sunday morning for the Stearns.......160 miles round trip. More to come.......

  10. The pick up goes to the very bottom....usually by the drain so you can inspect it or blow through it if needed. I have had a similar issue with my 904. Your tank is a mess....it needs to be cleaned and sealed. If you need more help, just ask. As a new member here you can not send PM's.....private messages. So post in the open, and people can respond. From the looks of the tank, you should pull the pump and carburetor at the same time.......fix the entire system, or you will be sitting on the side of the road. How about a photo of the car?

  11. It's right hand drive.....where was the photo taken? Looks like it's across the pond. When was your grandparent born? Add ten years for the age of him in the photo......that would be the time frame of the car.......which looks post WWI so I would say 1920 to 1926 on the car as a starting point. Fenders are unusual for the era....so it should be easy to identify.
