  1. As they say on Antiques Roadshow...Wow!
  2. I figured you guys would be a great help. I'll start with Kroil or ATF/acetone, working the crankshaft, pulling the crankshaft, and finally my sawsall, and let you know how it goes.
  3. I've got a replacement V12 for the 49 Merc V8 my 41 Zephyr has been running, but the pistons are solidly rusted in place. Is the Coke solution a myth? Is there a better way to break the pistons loose short of a sledge hammer and lots of WD40? Dave
  4. No, we've been running a 272 from 59 until last year. Was looking for a 292 but had to settle for a '56 272. Next is to put on a 4 barrel. Dave
  5. www.ford-y-block.com is a good resource for parts. I bought their aluminum valve covers for our boat engine and they don't leak oil, which the stamped steel ones did at the necessary uphill engine position. We've run a '54 Y-block in the boat on unleaded regular with the original valve guides for 20 years without problems.
  6. Thanks, Jeff and Dee. I didn't think I should be messing with that big 15/16 nut that secures the post. Now I know to heed Bill's adjustment advice. I wish more cars would use standardized parts!
  7. I'm finishing up a brake job on my '41. It sounds like the '39 brakes are different as the shoes on mine float on the spring retainers and there is no anchor bolt. Or am I missing something...
  8. Thanks Cecil, what a great resource! I've been compiling entries from this forum over the past several years. I would make it accessible if I knew how.
  9. o.k., I'll answer my own question. With trial and error I found the valve that Napa provides that installs next to the outlet doesn't work, and the grommet doesn't seem to serve any purpose. The only combination of parts that worked was to use the old valve and replace the old spool and end seal with the Napa parts. Seems to work great, but I'll find out for sure when I come to that first hill...
  10. I went to my local Napa store last weekend to see if there was any chance they could order a rebuild kit for my 41 LZ master cylinder and they had it in stock! Problem is, the parts are a little different than the original. I think I got the assembly right except for a grommet with a hex shaped hole, which I put in right after the aluminum spool on the end with the holes. The little valve that goes into the bore first was also different than the original, which has a very light spring loaded diaphragm. Anyone had experience with Napa rebuild parts? Dave
  11. My brother acquired this for the '41 years ago, thinking it was a match. It fits the shaft and key, but the resemblance to the original stops there. Anyone recognize it? It's in great shape and should go to a good home.
  12. I have a Lancaster valve spring lifter tool that appears identical to the one currently on Ebay (#130282666754). It has a ratchet that holds the business end open after the handle has been compressed. I sort of recall my father using it on a flathead 6. Will it work on an HV-12? Dave
  13. I had to print out the "before" and "after" shots to show my wife why she should keep the faith. Bill- please plan on sticking around, I'm gonna need all the help I can get from you, Ace, Cecil, Peecher, and the rest of you knowledgeable guys over the next several years.
  14. Thanks, I'll follow up these leads. Happy Thanksgiving!
  15. In years of watching ads I've yet to see anyone reproducing plastic knobs for window cranks. All that's left of mine are the rivets. Does anyone know of reproductions, or will I have to cast my own? -Dave
  16. I have three La Salle steering wheels in various conditions, but all cracked and needing repair. They match one I found in a photo of a '39. If interested, please contact me at springerwinters@sbcglobal.net.
  17. Blocks for $25 anyone? See Item #160298616428. Located in New Jersey - ends in 4 hours. The item has an obscure heading that few of us would have found, but I happened across it while looking for La Salle parts.
  18. Zoot, I did the same thing as Tom! I bought his chassis manual only to discover I already had one. Let me know if you still need it. Dave
  19. As my wife says, this is the closest we get to having a baby.
  20. I'm not aware of anyone in Florida, but here's some names from past forum posts: Superior Pump Exchange Hawthorne, CA (310)676-4995 R.O. Hommel Pittsburg, PA (412) 279-8884 Bob Boos (480) 837-0978
  21. Good information! My chasis catalog says the housings (96H 2190-93)) are the same for '39-'48. Are these part numbers for the complete assemblies and for all four wheels? I haven't taken my '41's apart yet but I suspect they're pitted.
  22. Try www.classicautoservice.com or www.woodgraining.com. You might also try Lauren Matley in Wash. State at 253-630-8887, but I'm not sure he's still in business. I'm about ready to ship off my dash and window trims myself, so let me know if you have any success. -Dave
  23. Interesting. I'm getting the same thing. The car hasn't moved for 7 years and a pool of thick grease/oil keeps accumulating under that zerk fitting. By the way, Rolf, thanks for putting my speedometer on the back cover of Way of the Zephyr. I checked the mileage and it matched.
  24. Rolf, I was planning a trip to Santa Cruz tomorrow (Sunday the 29th) or the following weekend. Hoping you're still in the speedometer plastic renewal business. Can I drop it by? Please E-mail me at Springer@davisenergy.com. Dave
