  1. I got a great  tour with Billy IV about a year ago. He introduced me to Bully V, who was running around the place having a great time. Someone can correct me, but I think Billy  III is still with us; it’s Billy Thompson, Jr. we all remember at Carlisle and Hershey- with his infectious smile and handlebar mustache. I too saw the Mercedes 540 under restoration back in the day. And I saw it unveiled at the Apple Blossom show. I was stunned. I think it’s still under the same ownership and living in Potomac, MD.
During my first tour, the wheel cylinder equipment was fairly new to their shop. I met that crew a year ago- I think for the most part it’s the same guys. I wouldn’t hesitate to use that service.

  2. On the left, my 1970 F-100 Explorer. I bought it on April 1, 2000- 30 years to the day after the previous (original) owner bought it. It has about 30,000 miles on the clock and was certified HPOF several years ago at the AACA Spring East show at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.

302 V-8 with AT and PS. The color is boxwood green. It gets used every time we buy a new mattress. A truck with an 8-ft bed is becoming a rare sight. The handling, with the so called “Twin I-Beam” front suspension can only be described as “floating” down the road.

Interestingly, it’s dimensions are quite similar to my 2003 Dodge Dakota, much smaller than the behemoths that full size pickups have become.

  3. Many years ago we “rescued” a half-feral female cat. She became a friendly indoor/outdoor cat and always liked to sleep on top of one of our collector cars- on its soft car cover. One day I learned why she liked that spot- when she brought me a little “present” to the house. She passed at 16 and the mechanical traps that replaced her are not nearly as effective.

  4. Assuming it’s the old truck in your avatar, the glass people use “glass setting tape”. It comes in varying widths and thicknesses. Your local glass shop will have it and will probably recommend what size. Better  yet, let them assemble it.

  5. Several years ago, I sold a nice set of Ford “spinner “ wheel covers to a guy in Michigan. As soon as they arrived, he complained to eBay about the condition. I refunded his $$$ and paid him to ship them back. When they arrived, I found he had removed MY spinners and replaced them with HIS which were heavily weathered. I sent pictures and documentation to eBay- they did nothing. I figured their college puke employees couldn’t understand what a truly wicked mind could do. I found another eBay seller who said the same guy did something similar to him. Buy hey, you can’t give a buyer negative feedback. Squirrels.

  6. If you are going to sell on eBay, you have to remember one thing. You, the seller, will ALWAYS come last. eBay will allow crazy bidders to do just about anything, and if you ask for help all you get is automated frustration.

So, if you can’t handle that, don’t sell on eBay. If you choose to sell, do whatever you can to protect yourself from the squirrels.

  7. Ok, the list of upcoming AACA regional swap meet events is listed in the current Antique Automobile.

In March we have Hamburg, PA on March 5. A great indoor/outdoor event. I believe there is a small gate fee. Parking is free.

On March 11, there is another indoor/outdoor event at the Howard County Fairgrounds along I-70 in central MD. Parking and gate are free.

On March 24-25, there is an indoor/outdoor swap meet at the AG Center in Westminster, MD. Free parking, small gate fee.

And then Sunday March 26, there is the “Cowtown” swap meet - actually at the Salem County fairgrounds near Woodstown, NJ. This is in a very rural part of NJ- not all that far from the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Parking and gate are free- but they might ask for a small donation at the gate.

All of these events are worth attending. March weather, on the other hand, can rear its ugly head.

  8. AutoMania. I think it’s worth the trip. What else can you do in late January?  If the weather permits, there will be several vendors (hearty soles) outside. The doors open at noon on Friday- expect a line to get in.

There are enough antique car parts to make it interesting. The doors open at 8am on Saturday.

Check out the museum across town. America on Wheels. Nice place well worth the visit.

Or you can wait until March and drive to Hamburg, PA.

  9. Find non-ethanol gas, use pure-gas.org

Buy it. If you need to drive 30 miles to get it- there’s another reason to drive your old car.

Take along a 5 gallon can. Your mower, chain saw, snow blower, etc will thank you.

Some day we’ll realize how much of a train wreck this ethanol industry has become. They say better living thru chemistry. We need chemists now.

  10. This week, I drove 1.5 hours each way to drop off my Hershey swap meet space renewal at the main Post Office on Chocolate Avenue in Hershey. This has become an annual tradition. The nice lady there hand cancels my letter and drops it in the Hershey Region’s PO Box before I leave. Of course, I stopped in at the Library, and the Museum before heading home.
