  1. I finally got my DK8 engine running - but, it's pretty tight following the total rebuild and sitting for a year. The 6 volt battery can't get it to turn over fast enough to start, so I use a 12 volt battery to get it started. My question is, will I hurt my coil, points, or any other igniton components doing this? I try to disconnect the jumper cables as soon as I can and don't have any lights on while doing this. My 6 volt batter cables are the big heavy 6 volt size cables. Larry
  2. Give Olson's Gaskets a call, phone (300) 871-1207. They've been very good for me, I've used their gaskets several times and found no problems. www.olsonsgaskets.com they are located in Port Orchard, Washington and turn around is pretty quick. Larry
  3. This is a Shutterstat and it's function is to operate the shutters in the front of the radiator. It is filled with a gas that causes it to expand and contract with heat to move the shutter arm back and forth. If it has stopped working, the shutterstat needs to be taken out of the housing and sent out for repair. Other forum members may remember the name and address of a fellow in Georgia (USA) who still rebuilds these things....Around $300 each. Larry
  4. Also, the '32 8 cyl car has a taller shell than the 6, and that might apply to the '31 models as well, so overall height might help sell this. Larry .
  5. I'll try.......it will take some time - hopefully it will help someone else down the road. Larry
  6. OK, I FINALLY OT IT ALL APART! The problem was caused by not removing the free wheeling clutch arm assembly and a "hidden" snap ring on the backside of the transmission. Once I took off the free wheeling unit it wasn't apparent that these things were the problem. The mainshaft comes out the front....with minimal force. What appears to be one long shaft inside the transmission is really two shafts connected in the middle, the back half of the shaft gets knocked out the back of the transmission. It's really kind of cool now that it's apart. I got the counter shaft out,,,it gets knocked out toward the back and then lifted out the top. I didn't break anything and feel better about repairing my DK with parts from the DL trans. By the way all the gears on trhe countershaft are fixed, so it's one piece and since both Dk and DL use the same part number for the countershaft - it should work. I should probably write a procedure for this - it may be similar to other Dodges in this era. My instructions were simple and came from an old Chiltons Flat Rate manual, with no mention of the snap ring or clip and the part names were not quite the same as the Dodge descriptions. Thank all of you again for your efforts in trying to help me through this problem. I really appreciate the help. Larry
  7. Well it's back to the drawing board...the snap rings are on the wrong side of the shaft, so they only serve to fix the location of the front bearing seal onto the shaft itself. The whole bearing has to be forced out the front of the case, through the hole large enough to accommodate the shaft. Thanks for your efforts anyway and thanks to Doug Walters who earlier mentioned possiblility of clips and told me to keep this on the forum where there are many heads to help solve these kinds of problems. Larry
  8. Taylormade, thanks to you for saying the magic words "snap rings". Larry
  9. Phil, WOW!! you get the gold star for today! I looked and looked and yet did not see these. It's late now, but I'll get into it tomorrow, after Church. Thanks so much! I think I might use my log splitter as a press (AFTER I PULL THE SNAP RINGS). I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Besides the snap rings, the bearing is surely a press fit. Larry:o
  10. While I'm still looking for a DK replacement transmission, I'm in the process of taking apart a DL transmission to get the countershaft and gear out, as it carries the same part no. as my broken one in the DK. I've followed the simple instructions found in a Flat rate manual For taking this apart and I'm at the spot where I'm to drive the mainshaft out though the front of the case. I've pounded 10 or 12 times and nothing is moving. Should I be using a 2lb sledge directly on the back end of the shaft. or dampen it with a wood block? I don't want to crack the case or break gears. Suggestions would be helpfull. I don't see anything interfering - do the gears need to be lined up a certain way? If I get this shaft out to get the gear I need....I have to repeat this proicess on the DK transmission and I SURE don't want to screw that one up. So whatever works here on this DL trans should work there on the DK trans. Larry
  11. It looks like I have the same information you have. I also have some other stuff too like parts list books for dodge, chrysler, desoto, plymouth and dodge trucks and some interchange books. I have a spare DL transmission and will try to open it up to see what this involves. It might just work out. I wonder where the gear tooth went and how it happened, there were no metal pieces in the oil when I got the car - come to think of it, there was very little oil in the transmission because a mounting bolt was loose, leaking oil. I might see cracks in the main drive pinion making it an even bigger problem. When the car was delivered, the brakes had been poorly rebuilt and didn't work. Someone may have use the transmission for an emergency brake, or the car was banged into while it was parked in gear (that happened to my son's Jeep when he was in college, damage to trans was similar). thanks for your help...I'll probably have a question or two Larry
  12. Jason, there is no item number for the broken gear, only #56 for the whole countershaft, whiich maybe the primary gear is part of the shaft. According to my parts books, some Desoto, Plymouth, Chrysler CI and and Dodge DL and Fargo trucks use the same countershaft, but I don't know about the gear - whether it's separate or not The gear assemblies have different part numbers for all those other vehicles. Larry
  13. Thanks for pointing me to the H.A.M.B., I scanned through all 100 pages of stuff and nothng turned up. But you would never know. Maybe on another day. I still think there's a few in the back corner of a street rodders garage. in the meantime I'll keep checking Ebay and Hemmings. Larry
  14. I am in need of a replacement transmission for my '32 Dodge 8. It's a 1 year transmission, part number 384165 (this number is cast onto the right side of the transmission housing). It, must be from a DK 8. I've seen several DK 8's turned to street rods so I hope the old parts weren't all scrapped. thanks, Larry Yirga
  15. thanks for your advice, guys! Larry
  16. IN the last message he says he lives in Franfort Indiana. He will not accept a post office money order, only a moneygram, whatever that is. Maybe I should offer to drive to his place, its only 200 miles.each way..........UGH. His messages and words are very similar to David Brooks from the UK mentioned above. Larry
  17. I'm still looking for a '32 Dodge DK 8 transmission. I can't beleive there isn't a few out there from street rod projects. Larry
  18. I have had an email from him as well saying he has the part I'm looking for. What makes you feel he is a scammer other than not being able to produce a photo? Has anyone had a good experience with this guy? Anyone lost money or parts? Larry
  19. No they aren't the same - the 32 DK 8 is a one year transmission. Thanks anyway Larry
  20. Thanks for the good suggestions, i'll try to put it together as you suggest. I'm away from home and all my books and the car - so when I get back there next week maybe I can get the info together. Larry
  21. My transmission has a broken primary gear on the countershaft, I'd like to find another transmission in better shape. My Email is yirgaman@netzero.net The trans is different than the 6 cyl model DL, maybe someone who has street rodded their DK would like to part with the old transmission. Larry
  22. Thanks for the information F&J. The tooth is completely gone. If I can't find a new gear, I'll have to replace the transmission. If anyone has an idea where I might get a gear or trans. pls let me know. Larry
  23. Jason, there is no tooth to weld back on, none was found inside the case - so my guess is this didn't happen while I owned the car. Since it's not listed as an identifiable gear in the parts list, only as the countershaft gear assembly - it maybe integral with the countershaft. My guess is that only comes into play while the transmission is in reverse. I never heard a clicking noise while I drove the car the few miles that I did. As long as I take it easy and don't do "burnouts" in reverse, this may never be a problem?? I have a spare DL transmission and the schematics look much the same- although the parts have different numbers, I might try taking the DL spare apart to see how this works. I don't have much time to do this, so it'll be while until I know more unless somebody who's "been there-done that" can tell me what I need to know..... thanks for your input. Larry Yirga
  24. WHile I was putting my DK8 back together, I checked the inside of the tranmission and saw a missing tooth on one of the gears inside. It;s the big gear on the front of the countershaft at the font of the transmission. The tooth was not in the bottom of the case nor in the oil. I only drove this car about 20 miles before the engine gave up and had to be rebuilt. I don't remember any noise or trouble shifting. Does this gear only come into play in reverse? What do you guys think? I don't know much about transmissions, never had one apart. I don't want it to blow up and tear everything apart and have no idea where to find a new gear. I should have checked this before I spent 2 days putting the trans back in!!! Larry Yirga
