  1. ONTO MY SOAP BOX: Someone asked a simple question: "Do I need to be an AACA member to post items for sale"? The simple answer is "no", the forum is free to register and use, AACA member or not. It's been that way 26 years. Question asked. Question answered. End of story. Or you'd think it was. Unfortunately, that's not where it ended. 29 posts later everybody had their underwear in a bunch and the original poster was put off by the tone and language used in all the responses. Why do you guys feel like you need to respond to every post? The single biggest problem on this forum is not spam. It's the over abundance of people getting off-topic or getting themselves worked up over nothing. Instead of answering a simple question, we ran him off. "Before you speak (post or comment) ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid." - Bernard Meltzer ... and you wonder why posts and topics get deleted. This is a perfect example! OFF MY SOAPBOX:
  2. Forum users are welcome to offer parts for sale regardless of AACA membership status. Of course, you really should be a member if your derive benefit from this forum... don't you agree?

  4. The very first car to exceed 100 mph in the U.S. was a 1904 Napier Samson L48 with a 15-liter, six-cylinder gas engine under the hood. Driven by British mechanic Arthur Macdonald, the Napier set a world record for breaking the 100 mph barrier in January 1905, clocking in at 104.651 mph. https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/enthusiasts/america-s-first-car-to-exceed-100-mph-is-headed-to-auction-it-ll-fetch-over-1m/ar-BB1i5Dqc?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=1cb72454949f4359bbc34870311e1550&ei=89#fullscreen Is the car in tucson AZ? 5. This topic has been debated and re-debated countless times. Depends on who you ask. AACA (including this forum's focus), many other clubs, and most DMV, define an antique car at 25 years or older. Whatever the label, we're all car guys. Drive them. Restore them. Modify them. Park them and admire them. Totally up to the individual. Enjoy the vehicles you like! Respect others choices. 12. I love the topic started by Walt: "Period images to relieve some of the stress". It has such amazing contributions! UNFORTUNATELY... All the amazing contributions and feedback are lost to the VAST MAJORITY of users With 600 pages/30,000 responses, it's become like a library without any organization Responses to photos are disconnected from each other There is no topic title matching the responses, so itsvirtually impossible to search The topic and its posts will live on. But you'll serve yourself and this community better if you use the forum software as it was intended and follow the forum recommendations: RECOMMENDATIONS: One topic per photo or set of photos. Comment on the photos within the same topic. Do NOT post additional unrelated photos to an existing topic. Create a new topic instead. THANKS!
  13. 2024 Hershey Flea Market & Car Corral Pre-Registration DUE NOW!! By R.J. "Mac" MacAdam, Flea Market/Car Corral Registration Chairman, Hershey Region AACA, fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org Renewal deadline is February 15! HURRY! Don't lose your spots!! On behalf of the Hershey Region, we thank you for attending the 2023 Fall Nationals. We hope you had an enjoyable experience. On a side note, please ignore the many FALSE RUMORS in reference to the Eastern Fall Nationals moving from the current site at the Hershey Entertainment Complex – none of them are true! As a reminder, the Eastern Fall Nationals will again be held the first full week in October starting Tuesday and ending with the judged car show on Friday. Mark your calendar for the 2024 show October 8-11. We have already begun working on the 2024 show in which Kurt Froebel will be the Fall Meet Chairman and Vance Wolfe will be his assistant. The 2024 pre-registration packet/cards have been mailed. If you have not received your packet in the mail, you should IMMEDIATELY call 717-566-7720 on Monday or Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. eastern time or emailfallmeet@hersheyaaca.org. Please read the following important information regarding the submission of pre-registration cards: 1. A "Space Relocation Form" will be enclosed in each vendor's packet. This will be the only form accepted for space relocation. If you write your request on the pre-registration card, a separate sheet of paper, etc., it will NOT be accepted. Also, be advised we make assignments using the postmark on the envelope. The space(s) must be available after the pre-registration phase in order for you to be relocated. (Additional spaces are NOT SOLD during pre-registration. The May/June issue of Antique Automobile magazine will include the procedure for acquiring spaces during summer registration.) 2. Pay close attention to the deadline on the card. The pre-registration postmark deadline is February 15, 2024. Your spaces will be in jeopardy if the postmarked deadline is not followed. The registered vendor is responsible (not the spouse, the assistant or the secretary to name a few of the excuses we hear). 3. If your card or check is not signed it will be returned to you. That will also delay your postmark position for relocation. 4. Checks deposited that are returned for insufficient funds, account was closed, etc., will be charged a $35 administration fee. 5. The dates and times for which our telephones will be staffed will be printed on the pre-registration card. If you leave a message, please speak slowly and clearly leaving your name, telephone number, AACA member number and a very short message. 6. If you have NOT yet received your new 2024 AACA membership card, DO NOT WAIT to mail your pre-registration card. Write your AACA member number in the space provided on the card and mail it with your check or money order. 7. Political signs, memorabilia, bumper stickers, pins, buttons, etc., are NOT permitted for sale or display at any AACA National event. This should be considered the "suitable warning" for the following policy extracted from the Policy and Procedure Manual of the AACA. Vendors violating this rule will be expelled. Additionally, refunds of flea market spaces will not be given to the violators in accordance with the AACA Policy and Procedure Manual. 5.9.1 General (Excerpt) "Nationals are open to the general public. Therefore, their operation and conduct give the public its chief, if not the only, impression of us as a club. When flea markets are held in conjunction with National Activities, it is important that they reflect the family-oriented nature of our hobby and are in keeping with their intended purpose, i.e. to provide a source of parts, accessories, and memorabilia related to our hobby. The meet host reserves the right to expel, after suitable warning, any persons including vendors who conduct themselves in a way that would reflect unfavorably upon AACA." Special Room Offering for Hershey 2024 RM Sotheby’s has secured an introductory rate of $289 + taxes at the Hershey Lodge for October 7-11, 2024, which is over $100/night cheaper than their website is offering right now and as we all know, rates tend to go up the closer we get to the event! This deal is currently available to us until March 31 with no deposits, free changes, and free cancellation up to 72 hours before arrival. These rooms will go fast, so book early! We understand that there are other options for accommodations in Hershey – some being less expensive and some being more. Why not take advantage of this special offer and be where all the action is, watch the cars drive into the auction, watch the bidding, and have fun at a bustling hotel. Hersheypark Dr. Hershey, PA 17033   Join Our Email List Look Out Chantilly, Virginia… Here We Come! By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster Editor, szimmerman@aaca.org The AACA Annual Convention is literally right around the corner. Next week, hundreds of AACA members will make their way to Chantilly, Virginia, right outside of Washington, D.C., to attend what will surely be one of the best Annual Conventions yet. Working with the convention committee over the last 7 months, I’ve watched the event develop and grow with new ideas and concepts being added to the traditional framework members expect from the event. For the first-time ever last year, we added a full day of tours prior to the start of the convention. This year, we’ve taken that concept up a notch by offering an amazing day trip to the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Center complete with a very special luncheon overlooking the Space Shuttle Discovery and guided tours of the museum. For those attendees who were unable to secure a ticket for the sold-out luncheon, we are providing transportation all day between the hotel and the museum for free as well as free parking passes for those who would rather drive themselves, so that everyone can enjoy the museum. Something else we did for the first-time last year that was a huge hit with attendees was the Thursday night Welcome Reception Pizza Party. This event is also making a return this year and seems to be even more popular. Can you just imagine the look on the hotel chef’s face when he was told he had to create a pizza buffet for almost 300 people?! One of the main reasons many members attend the convention every year is the quality of the education we offer, and this year is no different. We have 27 excellent seminars on the schedule, plus 4 different judging schools and one CJE Instructors course. We have several brand-new amazing presenters this year including Dr. Peter Jakab, Chief Curator Emeritus, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum; Roy Johnson, President, NC Transportation Museum; Nick Ellis, Executive Director, RPM Foundation; and Steve Shotwell, Trustee & Past President, Ford Piquette Avenue Plant. Click here to see the most up-to-date seminar schedule. This year’s trade show will have 20 great vendors just waiting to talk to all of you. Click here for a complete list of vendors. The exciting new addition to the trade show for this year is the check-in card. Every attendee will receive a card with all of the vendor logos on it. All attendees who complete their card and get a stamp from every vendor will be put into a drawing for prizes. The prize drawings will happen during the Saturday afternoon General Membership Meeting. Friday night at convention is all about fun. Over the years we’ve had auctions, fireside chats with famous guests, the library’s pinewood derby, magicians and more. This year, we are amping up the excitement and taking the fun factor up a notch… Vegas style. One of the ballrooms at the hotel will be transformed into our very own casino. This event is completely FREE to all attendees, and everyone will be using monopoly-like money to play blackjack, craps, roulette and more. At the end of the evening, the monopoly money can be turned in for tickets for a prize drawing. Prizes include an AACA Life Membership, a two-night stay at the Embassy Suites in Concord, NC (site of the 2025 convention), Craftsman Tools, etc. We will also have 2 caricature artists sketching portraits all night for FREE! Another big reason many members attend the convention centers around the very last event on Saturday evening… the National Awards Banquet. Often referred to as the “Oscars of the Antique Automobile World,” this is when we take the time to honor our National Award winners for their service, dedication and support of this beloved hobby and our club. If you are one of the members who did not already register for the Annual Convention, but after reading all of this are now thinking… man, I can’t miss this! It’s not too late for you! We will gladly take onsite registrations to attend the seminars, trade show, judging schools and the Annual Membership Meeting. It only costs $45 to attend, and I can assure you it will be a great time! (Please note onsite registrants will NOT be able to attend any of the meal functions because those counts have already been given to the hotel and cannot be changed.) Safe travels and we will see many of you next week! Visit the AACA Library at the 2024 Annual Convention By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director, jwolfe@aaca.org We’re counting down the days ‘til Chantilly and can’t wait to see our favorite car people! All three librarians (and Spencer from BHA) will be in attendance this year, so stop by our booth in the trade show to chat with library staff and shop the book sale for a good read to add to your collection. We’ll have a bigger selection than last year and a nice variety to choose from, so don’t miss this opportunity to pick up a new book or two…or ten! Library staff will be presenting two seminars this year: The Library & You: An Introduction to the Library & Its Services and Preserve & Protect: Caring for Personal and Professional Archives. Be sure to check the updated seminar schedule when you arrive at the convention to see when and where we will be – you do not want to miss these presentations! The librarians plan to attend as many of the social events as we can, so look for us at the Udvar-Hazy Museum, Pizza Party, Regions & Chapters Dinner, Casino Night, Awards Banquet, and around the hotel – we love to catch up with members and hear about what you’ve been up to! If you plan to bring material you wish to donate to the library to hand off to us at the convention – please call to ask us about it ahead of time. We have a limited amount of space in the trailer and have already committed to accepting two large donations while in Chantilly. Thank you in advance! This WILL NOT renew your membership – instead, it will create a new one. Membership Corner: New Year, New Focus By Paula Lynn Ruby, AACA National VP Membership, paulaspackard@hotmail.com This is a member submitted article. New year, new focus! As we jump right into 2024, here are some things to consider regarding membership in your local regions and chapters and AACA as a whole: Be prepared to talk about AACA. Anytime someone asks you about your car(s), you should be ready to mention AACA and your local region/chapter. Whether it’s at a car show or the grocery store parking lot, be sure to throw in a reference about this great organization you belong to and why it’s important for anyone who loves old cars to join. Take advantage of groups who have guest speakers at their meetings – Rotary lunches, Chamber meetings, churches, senior living facilities, technical schools with automotive programs, etc. Simplify the path to membership. If an individual says yes to joining, be ready to hand them the next steps to close the deal. Have membership applications and an activity list for your local region ready to give them. Better yet, give them a pen and have them fill out the application right then, and tell them you will send it in for them. You could also carry business cards to hand out with both the National and your region/chapter websites encouraging people to join online. Optimize your website for new member conversions. Consider putting an FAQ section on your website. It’s natural for potential new members to have questions when joining an organization. Make it easy for them to learn about your club and find the answers they need. Offer an incentive to join. What do you offer potential members if they join your club? Maybe offer to pay their local dues for the first year? How about giving them a t-shirt with your region/chapter logo on it or an AACA window cling for their car? This doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor – just a little something to welcome them and show them some appreciation for joining. Step up your social media interaction. If your club is talking about participating in community events and hosting fun activities outside of a formal car show, make sure your social media matches. Pictures from events can easily and quickly be shared on your social media accounts and show how exciting it is to be a member of your club. Engage every single member of your club to take part in this effort so that your efforts are multiplied. Find co-marketing opportunities. Partner with other organizations in your area that have like interests to cross-promote both of your clubs. Offer a space for other groups to have information/membership tables at your events and vice versa you at their events. Be sure that those who volunteer to work your booth are approachable and can speak to your organization and its activities. If both groups have newsletters, offer to do an ad swap to promote membership and events. What about inviting their members to participate in one of your activities? Use your existing business networks. Do you have organizations and businesses that you are already affiliated with? Think about how they can assist your club with promotion and the recruitment of new members. Can you put brochures on display at their business? Can you supply them with flyers for an upcoming event to hand out to their customers? Make it a priority to get your new members involved immediately. As soon as someone joins your club, make them feel included and needed. You have events coming up that you need volunteers for, right? Add a volunteer job board to your website or have sign-up sheets at your meetings. Once your new members are volunteering and taking active roles in the club, they will be able to start doing their own outreach for you. They could reach out to another friend who’s into cars and say… “Hey, I’m working the concessions for the car show this weekend, want to come and help me for an hour?” Who knows, it just might lead to another new member? Good luck in the new year with the many opportunities that may present themselves!! ATTENTION REGIONS & CHAPTERS: Your Reporting Forms Are Due TODAY!! Just a reminder that your Region/Chapter Officer Reporting Forms and Roster Reporting Forms are due by January 31. These forms were mailed to your President back in the fall. If you need another copy of the forms, you can click here to download them from our website, or we can mail you another set if need be. Please return the forms to Sue Eitnier at seitnier@aaca.org. You can also mail them to AACA, 800 W. Hersheypark Dr., Hershey, PA 17033. Please scroll all the way to the end of Speedster to find the answer.

  19. The ad might disappear... so thought I'd capture it for posterity: Don't need a 16k Paperweight? Of course you don't! How about an Italian money toilet! Some of you may recognize this as a 2004 Maserati Coupe' (also known as the 4200 GT). Don't let that gorgeous Italian body fool you though, this car is Satan's chariot to Hell (or bankruptcy). I do not exaggerate when I say that this car has been in the shop HALF the time I have owned it. In the last 6 months, I have put ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS into it in parts and labor and the thing still isn't right. I'm not rich. I'm just an average dude that always wanted a Maserati. Since I was a kid I lusted after those Italian curves and exhaust note. Now my own kids come to me and ask me why there's no food to eat and the electricity has been turned off and I have to tell them it's because Daddy's car is sick again. This car has a new clutch, new clutch actuator, position sensor, F1 pump and relay, gear selector switch (a 2k SWITCH) new tie rods and new tires. It has the miraculous F1 transmission. As in if it works, it is a miracle. It is also seemingly inhabited by evil spirits. The voodoo priests at the Maserati dealer insist it's fixed. But it's not. And I've seen their facility. There's no tools, just an altar to Alejandro DeTomaso where they place the still beating hearts and smoking wallets of Maserati owners and ask for a vision of what the @#$$ is wrong with their clients' cars. Come take a look at it! It's Beautiful! It WILL let you down. You might think that since I poured so much money into it, that there must just be one more thing and then it will be perfect. You can drive it home and laugh at the poor slob that you bought it from who did all the work for you. Nope. Not gonna happen. This car will make you cry. So why am I asking 16 grand for it? Good question. I'm taking a HUGE loss at that price and that's the lowest price I can let it go for and still be able to pay my mortgage. If that's too much, don't buy it. I don't blame you. Come look at it! Bring a witch doctor and maybe, just maybe, if the stars are aligned just right you can drive it. DO NOT DRIVE IT. If you drive it, you will want it. It is fast. It is beautiful. It makes a sound like angels revving their angelmobiles. I want this thing out of my sight. I'm tired of sitting in it at night drinking and making engine noises with my mouth while I pretend it is not a huge pile of disappointment and debt. Do not offer me 5k for it. The Trident badge alone makes it worth more than that. I don't have to sell it. It can sit in my garage and I can continue to hate it. I don't HAVE to sell it. I WANT to. There's a difference.
