1. The XK 120/140/150s are great cars. My mom drove a 140 MC for years as her everyday summer driver. The only issue was warm days you watched that temp gauge. Big engine in a little compartment. The subject of this thread, a Stutz special is supposed to have a shortened DV32 chassis under the 1950s bodywork. Not horrible looking, not fantastic either. It has floated around in various Internet forums for years.
2. If it is a supercharged 8 Conv coupe than it could be worth 100k. If it is a 4 door sedan with the normally aspirated 6 and rust then maybe 2k. Or anything in between. A single picture would go a long way to narrowing that range.
3. John, that was well put. I did a search and this subject comes up about every 6 months like clock work. The original poster usually disappears quickly which makes me think it is just a trolling exercise.
4. What is cool about all pre-war MB is the build quality and the engineering. That dash is beautiful. Leather front and back? On the larger models the reserve fuel system (2 gallons) was in the cowl above the passenger's feet also. The valve is located in about the same place you describe. This must have been a standard feature of all MB. It helped when you ran out of gas and also when the fuel pump died.
5. Neat car. All the Mannheim records went up in smoke but not the Sindelfingen ones. 40 years ago they would give you the original owner too but not anymore. Please post some more pictures.
6. The difference now is that everyone has the pictures because of the Internet. That picture will always make sure this car sells for a big discount whenever it hits the market.
7. Just because one car sold for a ton of money doesn't mean they all would. I can't help but think of the 4 million dollar Dreamliner.
8. That is not a million dollar car. Still stinks.
9. The Goring Cab B should interesting. The market on a Cab B is pretty well established right now but the Goring connection would push it up I assume. Not a lot of the standard Sindelfingen bodies. The right hand drive cars are a tougher sell usually.
10. I know that 10 years ago or so one of the regions was making sidemount tire covers to order. I believe it was the Indiana region. Does any know if they are still doing it?
11. West - good tip on the tubes. I have fought with tubes in the past. Curt - I always knew you had good taste. Not yet Steve, sometime this month. I have gone the under/not inflated root with sidemounts that have full tire covers. If you have full covers it is impossible to get them out anyways. I know my dad's 35 Packard has the sidemounts with a spare in the trunk. I guess the ones in the fender are for show. I have seen the Royale's with just the chrome/painted outer cover and with full covers. If I go with anything I would probably go with full covers in body color. For now I just might go with nothing.
12. Yes, thanks. I think I will order a single tire and see if it will fit in the wheel-well. It looks like there are a couple of good choices in the 700-18 just none in the 600/650. My dad put white walls on every single car he owned (including the Eldorado daily drivers - think Huggy Bear) so I grew up surrounded by them. Sometime in my late teens I turned and started lobbying for the blackwalls. He was a big trippe light - trunk guy too. I've been turning him to my viewpoint gradually .
13. You need to post some pictures. If it is for an open car then the frame may have some value. The glass itself is worthless as just about everybody replaces with safety glass.
14. I found the Firestones on Coker's website (700-18) but I'm not sure they still carry them. I was told that only the radial was available as a 18 inch blackwall.
15. Yes, I did check out Lucas. They carry the Bedford which I'm leaning towards. I'm just worried about the width. They carry this 550 but it is probably too small: A friend sent me this picture of Firestones that look like 700s. These would be great too if they are still available.
16. The tubes can be a problem - I know. Where do you get yours now? On the blackwall vs whitewall debate, to each his own. 95% of the cars manufactured prior to WWII came with blackwalls. But for me it is just an aesthetic preference. I'll be throwing the trippe lights in the trash along with tossing the accessory trunk. I just don't like doo-dads interfering with the original lines of the car. Dutch Darrin and I are kindred souls on this subject! However, those of you that like the whitewalls are certainly welcome to use them... Just not for me.
17. I love this but it is a 700-18 also. Bedford. Maybe I'll get one and see if it fits in the wheelwell.
18. Here is a Lucas tire I found, but it is a 700-18 so I don't think it will fit in the wheel wells. Universal does not seem to carry a 18.
19. So you can see my problem. Radial is out, other 2 choices don't look right. The 18 is part of the problem, there are more choices in the 17 inch wheels.
20. I did some searches and I originally posted this as part of another discussion but realized it was probably not in the right place. I need to find a set of 600/650 18 inch blackwall tires for my 31 Royale. There does not seem to be very many choices as I want an appropriate prewar tire tread. The best fit seems to be the Cocker Execlsior Radial. Thoughts? 1. Here are the tires on it now. Wrong tread pattern and I really don't like whitewalls. 2. This is what I wanted, the Coker Excelsior Comp V which I used on my Stutz. They are discontinued and not available. It looks like most vendors advertising them did not actually stock them and Coker shipped for them. 3. This is what Coker is pushing now as a replacement, Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial. I'm not sure about a radial and also not about the look? 4. I found this Lester blackwall but I do not like the modern tread pattern. 5. Here is the Dunlop B5 which is crazy expensive (400/tire). Again, smooth tread pattern.
21. None that I know of. Curt will reply definitively.
