1. Thank you all for your help! I was able to find what I needed.
2. Hi, I am desperate need of rear wheel cylinders for a 1962 Special. I have looked everywhere and cannot find them. I am not looking for rebuilt kits, but rather for the entire cylinder itself. If you can please help, reply here or email fustogrande@yahoo.com. Thanks. -brian
3. Hi, I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have been looking for left and right wheel cylinders, and a brake rebuild kit, for the rear wheels of my '62 Special. I cannot find these damn things anywhere. If anyone has a good place that would, please let me know! Thanks, -brian
4. Some of you may remember my thread on the "general" board about installing satellite radio in my '62 special. well, i've decided to go ahead and get an alternator to replace the generator, so i'll be sure to have enough power. I have the 198 V-6 in there. so, i'm thinking about perusing my local junkyards tomorrow in search of an alternator. not being all that familiar with buick electical systems, would an alternator from a, say, mid-70s buick work with my engine? i guess the question is, what years are interchangable with my engine and electrical system? i should point out that all the wiring, to my knowledge, is still 43 years old in my car. i'd like to go the junkyard route first if i can avoid buying a brand-spanking new one for now, if possible. thanks for any help you can give! -brian
5. Thanks, NTX5467 and Bob, for your replies. I'm certainly not looking to turn this car into a thumper, shall we say. in fact, quite the opposite. I just want to have it where i can have a nice "wall of sound" in there. And, because the car is just about 98-percent original, I'd like to keep it as such. Your idea of putting stuff under the dash is a good idea; there is plenty of room under there. As for another radio...wouldn't I just need an amplifier to attach from the satellite radio? The generator is one thing i'm concerned about. When I first bought the car about seven years ago, I had a boombox on the floor. So one time I hooked a portable CD player through the cigarette lighter and wound up blowing two fuses. Don't know if it's a faulty cigarette lighter, but still... Were alternators optional equipment back then? I have the first year of the 198 V-6, so i'm not sure if the V-8's came with that option. -brian
6. Two questions: First, where I can get a replacement antenna for my 1962 Special? It snapped off, and I would like to find one just like the old one. Since it was for the AM radio, it was one of those 2-3 foot high ones (made it easy to spot in a parking lot). Secondly...I am going to install satellite radio in my car. Obviously, all I have is the center speaker in the dash for the AM, but I want to put four speakers in AND try to keep them out of sight. I'm thinking two on the back shelf, but underneath it. For the front, I was thinking of seeing if I can find a speaker that will fit in the vents down by the footwells. Can anyone give me some ideas of where to put speakers besides the places I mentioned? My car is all original and I prefer to keep it that way. For example, I'm going to put the amplifier for the radio in the glove compartment. Also, would I need to think about an upgrade of the wiring? It still uses a generator, but I'm not sure if the added load is gonna cause trouble. Thanks for any help! -brian
7. Well, believe it or not it doesn't use up any oil. I change it every six months and it hasn't wasted a drop. It's been very good to me (I'm the second owner, owned it a little over six years now) and still runs strong; it hauls up the hills. i just thought about doing a rebuild because since it's getting pulled anyway for the freeze plugs, why not put new things in there now so i won't have to pull it again down the road? it's all original, right down to the paint. so, i thought, let's spiff it up a bit. Really, the only problem i've had with it is my oil pump. some of you may remember (but probably don't), about three months ago i posted on here because my oil light kept coming on at idle. my mechanic, after rebuilding the pump, said the light would still flicker after and they didn't know why (yet still charged me $300 for the rebuild...bastards). Since this is the first year of the V-6, is this a pretty rare engine? Just curious...it's staying in there no matter what (no V-8 upgrades or anything), rebuild or not, so I'm also wondering if doing this will make it more attractive in the future. thanks, -brian
8. Hi all, I have a '62 Special and am getting the engine pulled to change all of the freeze plugs (it's leaking water). So, since it's going to be out I'm thinking about having it brought to a machine shop and having it rebuilt. Can someone tell me about how much it would cost to do a rebuild? It's probably about time for it as it has 83,000 miles and it's also starting to smoke a bit on startup. What specifically should I replace besides seals, et al? Or will it be dictated when the machine shop pulls off everything? Thanks for any help you can give. -brian
9. Where can I get a replacement AM radio antenna? My old one for my '62, which extended out to about three or so feet, snapped off. I'd like to find one that is the original length...made it easier to find it in a parking lot. Also...I've noticed auto stores around here (Connecticut) only sell halogen headlights. Any online stores still sell the T-3 sealed beams? Thanks for your help.
10. Thanks for all your replies. Joe and tommy1927: I will try the different oil grade...I hadn't heard that one before. I don't have AC, but you're right...with every part being 42 years old, I'm sure some stuff has worn down. Jaybird: My mechanic also suggested putting in some STP Engine Restorer. The engine does smoke on startup. Centerman: They didn't tell me about the condition of the old oil pump...all I know is they couldn't find a gasket for the pump so they had to make one. (Mine, too, is a four-door). Here's another question...is an engine rebuild worth it? I've often wondered this. I mean, it runs like a champ and I have no complaints. Is the engine worth a lot because it is the very first V-6? Thanks, -brian
11. hello, I have a '62 Special with a V6. A couple of weeks ago, while coming to a stop, my oil light came on. Pulled over immediately and shut it off, and found it to be filled right where it should be with oil. continued driving, only to find the light came on with my foot off the gas or when idling. fast forward to today. got it back from the mechanic. he rebuilt the oil pump (i should put here that the car is 99.5 percent original, so the engine is all 42 years old) and found the light still came on. sent away for a new oil light sender. it "somewhat" cured it, as the oil light now flickers when changing gears. what could this be??? i have driven this car without a hint of a problem (it has 83,000 miles) for the past six years. there is no tap-tap-tap coming from the engine, like if it should ever be low on oil. it's not losing a drop, either. your help is appreciated. thanks! -brian
12. I have a 1962 Buick Special, original V6 and two-speed automatic transmission. Next year I am thinking about driving cross country, and would prefer to do it in this. However, when I am driving 65 mph, the engine has high RPM's because it only has two forward gears. Would it be wise to switch to a three-speed automatic for such a long trip like this? Does anyone have any trouble doing 75-80 mph with a three-speed? Hitting mph like that is pretty much impossible in my car. Would appreciate any info anyone could give on this question. Thanks! -brian PS Has anyone ever done a cross country trip in an old (25+ years) car? Any advice to give? thanks.
13. Hi all,
I'm posting another message in the hopes that someone knows of its whereabouts.
About 10 years ago, my family sold my grandfather's 65 LeSabre two-door. It had around 42,000 miles and we sold it for only $300 (no one wanted it, and I didn't have my license). As is the case, the car was in fine condition, no rust or anything. Well, now we want to try to find it again.
I should mention that this car, up until 1997, was in Connecticut. I don't know if it still is today. The VIN number is 454375Y143126. It is a two-door, and the color is green (I don't know if it's been changed). My grandfather owned it from new until around 1992. The last known owner that I know of was an Angelo Troce who lived in Hartford, this was in 1997, and at that time it had 45,000 miles.
I would be greatly indebted to anyone who can help me find this car...it means a lot to me and to my family. Thanks for any help you can give...please reply here or email me at fustogrande@yahoo.com Thank you!!
-brian
