  3. I seem to remember a discussion on the addition of a remote fill reservoir for the '53s and earlier of our cars. I can visualize the mechanics of the layout, but what keeps the lower or original master cylinder reservoir from leaking or oozing the fluid? Do we just depend on a good tight gasket down there? Hi Ya: I have a '53 Pat and at the mention here of KEYED AND/OR UNKEYED coils, I ran out to the garage to see what mine is, and I'll be darned, I guess I don't know what to look for as it looked like any other coil I've ever seen.   5. Rattpac: Believe it or not, my Patrician, with 89K on it, had most of the grey paint still on it below the head when I bought it thirteen years ago. These cars were built when there were many labor problems being adjusted in a post-war setting. Any cost cutting proceedure changes that would not affect the quality of a PACKARD were quickly adapted on the production floor. It just seems that they stopped prettying up these cars with the advent of the '48s. From the early '30s until the end of the 1947 production run they were beautiful cars inside and out in every aspect.   6. Rattpac: I prettied up my engine a little and brightened up that dark cavern in which it sets for obvious reasons. Everything you asked about came grey with the exception of the transmission cooler. It was black in the assembly parts bin at the shop and because of model differances and assembly line needs, the thing never did get a finish coat of paint unless it was done at the dealer by customer request.   7. Since I have no idea what an UBBCode is, I'll just write something here and hope it gets through. As an aside to the main subject here, rust being the connection, I'd be very interested in knowing what and how the buyer of that '33 TOURING SEDAN, that he purchased up here in SHUNK, Pa., is doing with that car. I think that auction was held way last spring. I'm not sure of the date, I know it was very cold that day, but what am I saying, it's always cold in Shunk!! The only thing missing off that car was the hood mascot. But 'cha know? I thought I saw that mascot get separated from the subject Packard and sold for $190. But,of course,I could be wrong.   8. Big Kev Re your post of 5/3/05: Would you please explain why the ignition of a '54 will not work in a '53 or vice/versa. Just want to know....... I am wanting the parking lights on my '53 to operate when the low beam of the headlights comes on. Is this modification possible given the design of the fifty three's headlight switch?????????     Here are some data for you to collect, however phony the measurements are: 8oox15- center of axle to floor 13.5 inches at 32psi 800x15- " " " to tire edge 7.5 inches 800x15- tire inside diameter to tire outside diameter, measured at the 90 degree position is 7.0. The overall width of the tire is 8.5 inches with 5.250 inches across the tread. Where does one get 8 eight inches in any part of the above designation? A reasonable question.   11. Let me tell you how I fixed that trunk light problem. Actually I didn't have a problem 'til while I was polishing the old one. I slid it open inadvertantly and lost the mercury (I think it was mercury that dropped out.) Anyway, after going in the house and bawling hystericly to my wife about my loss. I finally pulled myself together enough to look at the trunk light in her '91 Dodge. Sure enough there was a nice little mercury switch there. So I got in the Packard, drove down to Van Campen Dodge and bought a NEW switch for the trunk of our Patrician I have a torpaedo connecter in the line which I can disconnect when We're not showing.     John Packard that is quite a story. West Peterson: That tube might be the heat tube for the automatic choke control and should originate at the choke spring housing and dead end in a recess in the exhaust manifold toward the rear so as to heat the coil spring and turn off or open the choke.   14. '49 Packard: I recently installed one (tailpipe)on my '53. It wasn't too hard, First; remove the rear sway bar or in your case the sway dampener shock. Then you need to lift the frame as high as you can using jack stands with the wheels JUST off the floor. This arrangement will facilitate the installation of that long pipe. Next: You'll want your secretary there with you along with her Funk & Wagnal and The King James Version so she can interpret for the neighbors the new language and phrases that you will be coining.     Randy, can you tell me what a new oil pressure sending unit would have to do with increasing the pressure, if that's possible then it might help my friend's car which has an annoying tick. his is just like mine: a'53 Patty. Of course it's a straight 8, but wouldn't the solution be the the same for that engine? I don't have any idea what the pressure on his Packard is running, but it had a recent valve job. The remedy sounds like a miracle and with that I believe he's ready for one. LeRaysville Dude, Jay

After reading the PACKARDS IN MOVIES roster I would never clean the seats of that beautiful '33 1001 convertible to which V.Milke refers in his post of 5/27/03 and even though it has been thirty four years since Brigette <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> drove it I would be sleeping in that Packard every other night and wouldn't need my Viagra the next night!!!!!!!! There is still no vaccuum or pressure from either outlet on the fuel pump as I hooked vac. and pressure gauges to the ports alternately. I think I'm doomed to tear down the unit!!! I have to see.   18. I can remember that a few weeks ago I saw a list of movies (flicks in todays parlance) that had Packards of any year or model appearing in them. The list appeared to be abreaviated as I thought it should be longer. Anyway, there is one titled "QUICKSAND" starring Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre, Barbara Bates and an old man and his 1950 Custom Sedan.   19. Ah HA: B.H.,Speedster and Albert thank you all. What you've told me is exactly right. I was looking for more detail to tell Speedster when I decided to test the fuel pump by itself, and found that I had no vaccuum. I, of course, am a little embarassed that I didn't check that first instead of having a panic attack. But then I wouldn't have found out about the BALANCING VALVE would I? Now I'll rip into that pump and probably find a ripped diaphragm. Oh,Shades of my youth! That will be nothing new but, this time fixable. Yeah! No joke!!!! Thanks again.   20. I don't want to beat a dead horse to death again. Right? But, I need to know what that thing is on the rear side of the four barrel carburator of my straight eight '53 Patty and what it's function is, since it is situated in the middle of the vaccuum wiper system. It is my belief that the dual action fuel pumps were there to stop the wipers from slowing down upon acceleration or climbing a grade. Now I know that you fellas with the v-8s use the same systems and among all of you there should be a compendium of reasoning for this unit's positioning and function. I know ( at least on NEW Packards ) that they didn't have that problem. Thank you in advance for your kind attention to this question.   21. What a wonderful article on the last Packard dealer in this area, Brad Berry, a very approachable man but, lonely as my wife and I saw him. If you had a Packard or could talk knowledgeably about Packards you were good for at least an hour and a half conflab with him 'til someone would pull in on the apron wanting gas. Blond, you can hang your hat on this one, a bang-up job, very nice. I first met Brad when in 1994 Pat and I cruised to the Napa store in Jersey Shore, Pa. a forteen mile run from where we lived in DuBoistown at the time, to get a new filter for the power-steering pump in our '53 Patty. You can imagine my surprise when the couterman asked "Doesn't Berry over there, have one?" Here I'd been driving right on by this Packard Garage, across the street and one block east of Napa, every time I went to points west on route 220. No small amount of credit for getting Mr. Berry to come out into the world, I learned at the time, should go to JOHN SHIREMAN who helped him get his cars ready to show. Of course the 25,000 mile Packard Custom Convertible took the honors every time it showed. I could go on, but I won't for I don't want to bore anyone. Anyone: Is the enamel on the cloisonne caps brittle enough that it will crack when the copper in which it is molded is bent a slight bit or is it plyable enough that it won't crack under a little straightening pressure?? I will post this here simply because I can't find the proper thread and too, I think it deserves a look by the masses before it gets hidden away in the dungeons of the macabre and unliked by the Boss or whoever does that sort of thing. maybe, just time. Last night I watched the movie "Chinatown" again just to see that beautiful yellow '36 Packard convertible that Faye Dunaway drove and I'd forgotten what a rotten trick Jack Nickleson pulled by kicking out the right tail light lens just so he could follow her car in the dark and have a pretty good idea even at a distance that it was hers. I'll probably never foregive that Jerk. But, I hope his nose soon heals up. I took my Pennsylvania driver's test in a similarly wonderful 120, only it was a touring four door sedan. What a nice driver IT was. Equally as nice as the later ones, my '53 included. I have always said "you can't up-date a Packard"!!!! LeRaysville,Pa. Dude Jay Hennigan

    Pics of my baby

    Mark Patty 400 and all: A long time friend of mine recently gave me an old(yeah, what else?) cormorant hood ornament that he said came off his father's '51 Packard. The reason being, that "dad" found an old one like it years ago and put it on the car, but not until he'd taken it to the shop and put hinges on the wings, operable through a cable that he located on the dash. Chuck said the OLD MAN got many a laugh when the local bars emptied on to the street to see the "MECHANICAL HOOD ORNAMENT"! I, for one, am very sorry I missed seeing that one.
