  1. Keith, I suggest using a pre-HEI (-1973) Pontiac V-8 ignition wiring set. Although the Packard V-8 is wider & longer than a Pontiac, the usual slack in the wiring should accomodate the diff. Let us know what you find out.
  2. It's not a movie, but a TV show. In the Dragnet 1967 episode last night on the Sleuth Channel, Gannon and Friday drove up to a hospital and there parked near the front was a 1955 Patrician. Thanks to TiVo, I was able to rewind it and make sure of year & model.

Maybe he can chime in and include some pix.

    HappyThanksgiving

I hope everyone had a pleasant and safe holiday. Thanks to KevinAZ's invite, I spent an excellent TG dinner (best sweet potatoes ever!) with him and his inlaws in Las Vegas. We talked car stuff, watched some Football and enjoyed a fine time. Also, there were no traffic problems between Pahrump & Las Vegas. Can't ask for anything better. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

    You need this!

Hey, I've got a 56 400 back end that would work just as well (left over from the Packard V-8 Club meet in May). And cheaper too!
  9. ...move along now. Oh, somebody is building a Bonneville car with a 352 Packard V-8 and they are using, among other things, the well known (to this forum) Melling oil pump conversion and Hilborn fuel injection. Nah, nothing happening in the Packard V-8 world. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
  10. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Craig: I will make the following offer to members of the Packard V8. (snip) You also provide a list of the members and address of this forum that are members of the V8, who would like a dvd I would do this free of charge. (snip) </div></div> That's very generous of you John, but the last time I got involved in a "large scale" (the term is relative, maybe 6 or 8 copies) copying of a TV show and offering to copy to vid tape and distribute at slightly above cost, I got a call from the host of the show warning me about copyright violations. Maybe the slightly "for profit" made a difference, but maybe not. If copies are made amongst "friends" for personal use, there shouldn't be a problem, I'd guess. Because of the above, I will decline your kind offer. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
  11. Quick review since I've now actually watched the show. The 1956 400 is one of two feature cars on this show. The other is a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Seville (2dr HT) with 365CID 2x4 engine, so it's a good comparison because the 400 is equipped with the Carib 2x4 also. The guy who owns both (NPD) knows his stuff and did not mis-state anything about the 400 including the T-L, except that he did not really explain it. A fun show to watch. I've got it on my TiVo if anybody wants a video tape of it at cost.
  12. On the Sep 3, 2006 episode of My Classic Car (Speed on DirecTV #607) is extended coverage of a 1956 400. The episodes aired today (already and at 7:30PM PDT), as well as early AM (12:30AM) tomorrow as well as 4AM on the 7th. Set your TiVo or VCR accordingly if you did not see this show already.
  13. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Are any of these running the Full-Flow conversion I read about on your site, or are they all still using the bypass oil filter? If they're still using the bypass filter, it makes you wonder if the oil pressure would be even higher with a full flow version? </div></div> KevinAZ is the only engine that has the full flow conversion at this time. My Panther 374 will also have it. Perhaps Eric's 374 too and possibly others. Remember that you have to have the engine completely apart in order to make the full flow mods. Since there is a "controlled leak" at the bypass oil filter, I agree that more pressure should be available with the full flow filter arrangement which has no such leak. Also, I also do not think that enlarging the main block feed hole will have any effect on oil pressure.
  14. Wow! Great pix! My favorite is the 1954 Ambulance.
  15. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Looks like Craig's Pontiac to the rear of paul? </div></div> Sharp eye Kevin! Yup, my 55 Pat was in the garage because after fixing the broken shock mount I didn't have time to clean it up. It would have been in a different class than Paul's Exec though. My 'Bird lost to 2 pristine AMXs, so I didn't feel too bad. Paul's car was definitely the star of the show though. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
  16. Paul Cornwell drove his 56 Exec from Vegas to Pahrump for today's car show. He won a well deserved 1st place in Modified Original class. There was always a crowd around him and his Exec. During the awards, Paul was the only one who was applauded when the prize was announced.
  17. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> Since the shock mounting pad is in a different location (in relation to other mounting bolts), will it fit the '55 okay?</div></div> It fits the 55 shock just fine, BUT I could not get the shock mounting bolt loose from the 56 (too many years of rust welding), so I substituted a 1/2 bolt (to fit the hole in the 56 bracket) and a brass sleeve with 1/2" ID and 5/8" OD to fit the hole in the shock. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">A weld job like that should have a doubler plate welded on to make it stronger.</div></div> That would be a necessary improvement to retain the 55 bracket. However, the 56 design is mechanically stronger. That bracket shows no signs of stress.
  18. I posted just 3 months ago about the broken right rear shock bracket on my 55 Pat. It was weld repaired at that time and reinstalled. Well, it just broke again along the weld <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> This time, I pulled the bracket off my 56 400 parts car. It was good and a different design. Apparently Packard discovered the weakness of the 55 design (right below) and corrected this in 1956 (left below).
  19. The recommended pump is Melling 22-FHV and Melling 22-FHVS pickup & screen. I believe this is the one for the high performance Olds engines (350, 400, 455), not the diesel. You can get this pump or its equivalent at a variety of common outlets such as AutoZone or Summit Racing. It is NOT included in the PV8C adapter & driveshaft kit.
  20. The Oldsmobile high volume oil pump has been successfully adapted to the Packard V-8! There are now three of the Olds pumps on three Packard V-8s, two of which have been road tested. The third is awaiting restoration of the rest of the car. Here are the initial results: Before (stock or PI-mod oil pump), engine hot: 33-40psi at cruise, 0-9psi at idle (600rpm). After (Olds High Volume oil pump), engine hot: 45-50psi at cruise, 15-20psi at idle. Here's a link to the details page on the Packard V-8 Club website: http://www.1956packardpanther.com/OHVOPA_Details.html Email me (wcraigh@sbcglobal.net) for price if you want one of these adapters. I have three in stock.

    1956 Factory Air

IMO. "Buy it now" at $5,000 is way too much for a 56 Pat in that condition, original A/C or not. If anybody does buy it and needs front fenders (the ones on that Pat are BAD), the ones off my 56 400 that we just disassembled at the PV8C meet last May are pretty darn good.
  22. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">(snip) How far out of Vegas are you. I am staying at the Stardust. </div></div> Pahrump is about 70 miles NNW from the Strip. If you have a free evening and a (rental) car with A/C, take a few hours and drive "over the hump to Pahrump" for some Packard face chat. Email me for phone # & directions if you can make it.
  23. It seems the rest of the USA is getting desert heat too. It's 106F in SoNV at this moment (2PM Sun 23Jul06), but that seems about normal with the rest of you guys, except those who got rained on, of course. My solution is to rise at 4AM, work from 5AM until about 9AM on car stuff in the garage. When temp reaches 85-90F in my garage (even with the swamp cooler running full blast), I'm done for the day in there. My 55 Pat sits outside while I'm in the garage. She doesn't seem to mind much since she gets back in the garage by 10AM. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

    '56 Brakes

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I can vouch for RO saying there was almost no brakes. Even if hydraulics perfect, with the treadlevac, you have no mechanical advantage as there is with manual brakes or other design power assist units TVac is a straight 1:1 and the entire power is devised from vacuum plus what little you put in. Other systems utilize mechanical advantage as well usually around 3 or 4 to 1 so if you are standing on TVac brakes with 150 psi foot pressure you get that to wheels wheras other designs might get 4-500 lbs with no vacuum. (snip) I believe Packard Panther site has an article about Tvacs and his efforts to adapt modern units with a mech. advantage. </div></div> There is only one solution to the dreaded Treadle-Vac: replace it with a modern unit. There are at least 4 alternates: mine on Panther site, Paul's adaption of mid-70s Lincoln, Eric's (Ford) and Keith's (Honda). I've said this before, but it bears repeating: <span style="font-weight: bold">The Bendix Treadle-Vac is a fatal accident waiting to happen!</span> Drive a Packard with a BT-V at your peril. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
  25. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">If one is determined to go with a new carb, the 600cfm Carter AFB and the Edelbrock are basically the same carb (snip)</div></div> True, true. BUT, the actual reason that the E-carb 600 cfm works good on a stock Packard 352 is because of the "air valve secondary", which is vaguely similar to the Qjet secondary and even more removed from the Holley vacuum secondary carbs. What this means is that the carb will "throttle itself" to the actual air flow demanded by the engine at any particular throttle setting/load. So, it seems the "best" choice is to buy the cheapest new E-carb you can. Also, let convenience of installation be an overriding factor. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
