  1. It wasn't making any noise that I could hear.  It just broke suddenly.  I have the differential apart and the teeth of the ring gear and pinion gear are worn down and rough looking. The are definitely chewed up. It was completely dry, so I guess the oil must have leaked out slowly over the years and I honestly never checked it.  Lesson learned.

  2. My 1991 Roadmaster wagon broke last week.  Wouldn't go forward or backward.  It wasn't long before I realized the problem.  I saw the drive shaft spinning and the rear wheels not spinning so I know it had something to do with the rear end gears.  I pulled out the differential assembly yesterday and, yep, the ring gear is almost toothless, and the pinion gear is too.  My question is, how does the pinion gear come out?  I know I have to remove the U-Joint and the yoke from the front of the differential, but then does the pinion gear just push out through the back end of the differential housing or is it pressed in?  This is my first attempt at rear end gears so I want to know what I'm getting into.  And the shop manual just says 'remove the pinion gear and shaft' but it doesn't say how.  And I'm thinking the big bolt that holds the yoke on is going to be fun now that I have the differential gears out there won't be any resistance keeping it from spinning when I try to take it loose.  Probably have to jam the yoke somehow while I take the bolt loose.

Any thoughts on any of this?

  3. I'm not doing the registrations for 2016, but if I am asked to do them again for 2017 I will put a place on the registration form for the forum name, then I can print it on the name tags.  I think that is a great idea.

I wish I could have made the forum gathering, but felt I was too busy at the registration desk to leave it unmanned for several hours.  Fridays are our busiest days at the show with about 1/3 of the attendees arriving on Friday.  Maybe next time we can have it after 5:00.

  4. I've been told that trailer parking will be at the Walmart next to the hotel, and there will be someone from the club there to help with parking and security.  If you win an award and are not at the banquet, they will mail it to you afterwards.  You can also request a copy of your judging sheet after the show.  There will be a form in your registration packet for that.

  5. Chad, John is correct.  There is a standard $35 fee for BCA members which all registrants must pay, no matter what they intend to do at the show.  This fee primarily is used to offset the cost of the show.  Then a Car Corral space is an additional $25, and you can park your car there from Wednesday thru Saturday.  Although the registration deadline has passed, we can still get you registered.  Just fill out the registration form and send it by email to BuickNationals@verizon.net.  If you don't know how to scan it, just send the information in a standard email.  You can pay by credit card or at the show.

  6. If you have ever met or worked with Jeff Brashares or Nicola Bulgari then you know what kind of people they are.  Both of them love Buicks and the Buick Club of America and I have no doubt they will put their best effort forward to make the 50th Anniversary a special event to remember.  Just bring your Buick to participate and enjoy the celebration along with other BCA members from around the world.  You won't regret it.

  7. Looks like a great deal to me. Solid, straight body, great looking tail lights (which are usually faded and cracked), great interior, good tires, shiny and straight chrome all around, fender skirts good great. What more could you want at that price? Someone closer than me should grab this one real quick. It won't last long at the reduced price of $2,500.

  8. I heard the host hotel will not allow RV overnight parking. However, you should call the hotel and clarify what they will or will not allow. There are several camp grounds nearby. Trailer parking will be nearby, at a site yet to be determined, until they see how many trailers are expected. That decision should be forthcoming soon, as the deadline is approaching fast.

  9. The prequalification checks the operation of such things like the lights, turn signals, wipers, horn, etc., and sees that there is a fire extinguisher and safety glass (where appropriate). The operational conditional of these items is not something a judge does in the normal routine of judging a vehicle. A judge will look at the condition and authenticity, but not operational. The judges will now have to check for a fire extinguisher and safety glass as part of their judging routine and will have to disqualify a car if they are not there. So, if you are having a car judged, be sure to have a fire extinguisher first.

  10. I can see where car owners might say that. However, one of the functions of the prequalification was to get a decent picture of your car, identified by registration number, for the annual Meet issue of the Bugle in October. Now the car owners will be strongly urged to go to a photo booth and have a picture made. Without pictures identified by registration number, it is impossible for the Bugle editor to associate awards with cars for publication in the Bugle National Meet issue. Although it will be less work for the owners, it could make the editor's job much more difficult. And if you want a picture of your car in that issue then you have to get a picture taken and recorded accurately.

Also, judges sheets for all classes (except Driven) were collected at the prequalification booth. One of the advantages of that is so the judges know for sure that your car is here. If there is no judging sheet, the assumption is the car is not here and they don't waste time looking for it. Without the prequalification, the judges sheets for the 400 point system may not be turned in by the owner, which could cause confusion at the time of judging.

I would prefer keeping the prequalification check. I understand the owners think it is a hassle, but not having it could add more complications to the internal workings of the show. We'll see how it goes this year.

  11. The Buicks in the Driven class will be parked in the same classes as the 400 point cars. Only the Archival class Buicks will be separated into an area of their own.

  12. Whenever I travel cross country I carry a recent BCA roster with me. I've never had to use it, but I figure I could call anyone in the roster for help if I needed to. I know if I ever receive a call for assistance from another BCA Member I would not hesitate to help as much as I could. I'm positive others on this forum feel the same way.
