  1. my 1930 studebaker GJ commander uses these too.
  2. i have a 1930 GJ commander tourer that has been in the family since new.for as long as i can remember it has been running on a British made updraught solex which according to my father was installed in the car during ww2 because it was more economical and fuel was rationed in those days, the carb was taken out for a service and has now gone missing! there is a stromberg ux2 available on ebay but i doubt it would work, since they disintegrate with age. another enthusiast here has a spare carter bb1 which he has offered me. will it work on the 248ci 6cyl Studebaker engine? and what about a schebler model s?
  3. is there a source for the friction and other washers? some years ago a mechanic opened up the column and lost the washers, as a result the levers move on their free will! and can ayone post pics of the linkages in the engine bay? how is the throttle connected to the pedal and steering in right hand drive cars?
  4. at first glance i thought Swift, but i would go with hillman too
  5. these were used in the 20s and early 30s to light up the kerb (right side in the USA)and not blind oncoming traffic, i bought one off ebay for my 1930 studebaker but it doesnt really work for us in india because we drive on the left side. it looks good on the car though. mine is chrome plated and looks bigger than this one
  6. yes the Indian car is a 7 passenger tourer, but the two centre passengers sit facing each other and the doors double up as seat backs. its a GJ Commander Six, bought new by my great grandfather, and still owned by us. the car has also been used by mahatma Gandhi, and most recently, in October 2011 it was part of the drivers parade in the Indian Formula1 Grand Prix, with Bruno Senna in the back seat.
  7. they keep coming up for sale on ebay, usually about 10 dollars for a box of ten, sometimes more expensive too.
  8. do you have any lights by Marchal, Lucidus, Stephen-Grebel, Woodlite and Auteroche?

here in New Delhi, it would easily make nearly 10,000 dollars as is.!! too bad we have restrictions on importing cars into India.
  10. hehe... is the springfield rolls-royce british?
  11. my 1930 studebaker has one like this too
  12. what are correct torque settings for tightening the main and rod bearings on a 1929/30 GJ commander six?
  13. i agree with edselv12, i too try and drop the pans in the older cars at least once a year, but in my lagonda V12, it involves undoing about 70 odd nuts!!
  14. hi, i too am in a similar fix, if you have come across any images of the linkages i would be grateful if you could let me know the link, or mail them at awi@vsnl.com as i cant find useable photos on the net. im repairing the light to mount on a 1930 studebaker tourer.thanks, regards, awini
  15. the car doesnt have any numbers on it, it has a straight eight engine, its definately not a 55-56, i think its a 53 as it matches most of the description for a 53 in the standard catalog of american cars, but the catalog doesnt list a hardtop, it has a three piece rear window and the tail lamp is vertical, divided into three sections by the chrome housing, the side trim is missing but the outline of the trim can be seen, it matches the staggered trim of 53 clippers, it has a manual transmission, there is a 54 clipper hardtop listed but that has different trim and tail lamp arrengement.could this be a very early hardtop made at the fag end of the 53 model year?
  16. i have located what appears to be a 53 packard clipper deluxe, it has vertical tail lights with fishtails but its a 2 door hardtop, i cant find any referece of a 2 door hardtop 53 clipper anywhere, all sources say they made a 2 door sedan that looked like a hard top. but the rear windows on this car do roll down, so does anyone here know better? the car is in a sad state and is partly dismantled.
  17. recenty the colour of the number plates in india were changed from white letters on black background to blask letters on white background, so when i took off the plates on my ex maharaja Jodhpur Lagonda V12 Rapide i found the number on the rear plate was painted on the reverse of the Maharaja's personal plate with cast aluminium letters which read "Jodhpur No.7" this plate was supposed to have been removed from the car before it was sold decades ago, i guess one of the royal drivers was making a little money on the side by using the old plate. another thing i found when cleaning out the tank of my 1930 Studebaker was a 12 inch file inside the tank. just how it got there is beyond me,

dear shishu where are you located? why do u want to change to 12V? i have a 30 Commander in delhi with the original 6V electrics, although i have put in an 8 volt battery in it, if u cant find a 6 volt battery u can hack a local 12v battry into 8 or 6 volts as u desire, bulbs can be got from motorcycle and scooter suppliers,or they can be made quite cheaply in areas like karol bagh and kashmere gate in delhi, i had 20 bulbs made last year for my lagonda.let me know if i can help u in any way, but i do hope you retain the original 6v.
  19. dear all someone i know wants to sell a circa 1925 willys knight which i presume is a model 66 because its 6 cylinder and about 18 feet long(216 inches) the problem is that it smokes like a smoke machine in a disco, when you start the engine, there is a virtual fog behind the car. obviously there is something wrong with the sleeves, but can it be fixed? if so where can new sleeves be had and how much would be the approximate cost, and what is a fair price to pay for this car? the car is a 7P tourer, complete, but needing total restoration, the only things missing are the hub caps which were stolen recently. the car is in india. thanks

  21. this is a mid to late thirties clock found on several british cars like morris, austin , wolseley etc, also found on some early post war cars. would you be interested in selling this clock? where are you located?
  22. any info on the above post would be much appriciated, thanks. also, wonderful site bill, quite an eye opener, but why no updates since november? from bill's photos i see that there isnt too much wood to tackle on the buick unlike some other woodies, the doors etc seem to be metal, so woodwork is not much of a problem for me. i can find craftsmen here who would do the woodwork by hand for about 10 dollars a day, my main concern is the mechanicals. it is very difficult to get quality mechanical work done here in india, so how difficult is a dynaflow to work on, and how reliable are these transmissions?
  23. can anyone tell me how to correctly set the spark timing of the GJ commander six cylinder engine? also, as the water pump was jammed i took out the aluminum housing which encloses the shaft, i noticed a screw near the oil galleries, which i assume is the oil pressure valve, but there was no spring or plunger of any sort inside, is this how its supposed to be? the engine did have low oil pressure when it last ran, could this be the reason? does anyone have a photo of how everything should look like? thanks in advance for any help..
