  1. As I remember some of the older GM cars had a double wire to the distributor. One was a resistor and one was not. Then you had 12v in the start position and 6v in the on or run position. this saved the points from burning and they lasted longer.
  2. Once our 84 Riviera had an intermittand window problem. After I remove the motor from the door, I carefully "uncrimped" the terminal piece at the rear of the motor (it's not very serviceable). This revealed the brushes, springs, and related connections. On one side of the brush area there was a bi-metal strip with a kink in it. Apperently it is designed to open the contact when the bi-metal heats up if someone's finger leans on the button to long. I added a slight bend to the strip to increase the contact pressure and cleaned the contact area. After testing and reassembly, the window work fine for years and was working when we go rid of the car at 186,000 miles. If you try this, be prepared to chase the brush springs.
  3. I caught the last half of a muscle car special on what I believe was the Travel Channel the other night. Roberta, was that you racing one of your Gran Sports? Pretty cool show if anyone catches it.
  4. I have both years and they are used everyday both have been good cars to own. We got the 85 in 89 and it had 40k on it. it now has 139k. Got the 84 in 90 with 60k on it, it now has 176k on it. Right now my kid are pretty much using them up and the still preform great. The differance in the 307 0lds engines is that the 85 has roller lifters and redesigned heads starting in that year. These are by no means powerhouse engines, but seem to be pretty reliable. In the case of this pair, I believe the 84 is a little bit strong runner.
  5. I was born in 1948, and my aunt brought my mother and I home from the hospital in a Kaiser. I don't know the year though. I believe at the time my dad had a 37 Ford. The next year he got his first new car, a 49 Chevy. I don,t remenber the 49 (only from pictures) But I do remember picking up a new robin egg blue 53 Chevy in the Fall of 52. He also had a 60 Corvair, 63 Nova, 71 Nova, and a 71 Pontiac Lemans.
  6. We got our 95 at 22k which now has 73k and like it a lot. The one thing I would like to improve on is I wish it had a firmer ride, but other than that I am pleased with the car

  10. I replaced the tires on our 95 Ultra with Micheln X-1's back in November of 2002. Pretty pleased with them so far. Improve the mushy ride somewhat. I have not been happy with the self sealing tire that come on a lot of Buicks.
  11. 403"s are still considered small blocks (260,307,350 & 403)The big blocks are the 400, 425, & 455. 403 are small block s(shorter deck height)400 are consider big block (taller deck height)even though the displacment is 3 c.i. less. late 70s Trans Am's with auto trans has 403 olds engines.(6.6 liter).
  12. My 84 Riv has decals on the rear side windows that says Buick is the offcial car of the Olympics. Its also has two tone paint which may be significant.
  13. Thanks for the replies. This has been hapening for a little while now so I don't think it is the gas and we fuel all 5 of our family cars at the same place. I think I'll give rocketradier's idea a try.
  14. Dave@Moon That was the first thing I check out. the 85's were still carburated and ran at low fuel pressue. I might also add if I shift into neutral of park and take my foot off the brakes, the smell is not as pronounced. This lead me to think it might be vaccum related. Carb has new float and at the correct hieght also. Thanks for the reply,
  15. On my 85 Riv. with a 307 engine, I get a fuel smell after the car has been driven for a few miles and after I set at say a traffic light for a minute or so with the brakes applied. I have check an replace vaccum lines, replaced TPS purge that goes to the canister The caniseter appears to be OK also. The oder goes away after I start to drive agan. There also not any codes set. Any one have any ideas?
  16. I have not purchased a Q-jet kit in a while, but the dense foam gasket that rocketraider was talking about use to come in rebuild kits from NAPA. If you wanted to install that in addition to the J-B Weld
  17. NTX5467. I have the original stiker and it or the owner manual do not say anything about electronic suspention. Your are right about the whitewall sealer tires they were an option. We have 57k on the car now, and I have been thing about replaceing the wheels and tire from 15" 70 series to comperabe 16" 60's with a wheel style simular to later model Ultra's
  18. One thing I have noticed is that most Ultra's have Grand Touring suspention and 16" wheels. My 95 has Dynaride and 15" wheels with the sealer tires that Buick likes to use. The top of the Struts have a 2 wire electrical terminal at all 4 corners. I too would like to have a firmer ride, so are replacement sturts "wired" also? We got this car when it had 22K on it and I have always thought it had too soft a ride.
  19. Tony: I bet you'll end up like it. Take it for an old Electra guy. Just yesterday I service the tranny for the first time on our 95 at 58000 and if was the cleanest I have seen at that mileage.

  23. I'm a 1948 model myself. My fist car when I was 16 was built 10 years after I was born.<BR>A 1958 Impala.
  24. If memorey serves me, don't about 4 timing cover bolt go into the water in the front of the block ?? Seems like I use to use Permatex Aviation Sealer on the threads. Maybe some one can clarify.<BR>I may be thinking of another engine.
  25. If there is no indication that it was the intake after you pull it off. You may want to get the heads pressure checked if you haven't before. I always like to apply a small bead of RTV sealer on both side of the 4 water passages on the intake gasket. But don't over do it. Look at it this way, at least it isn't is some cluttered up FWD car!
