  1. Personally I think the '89 Allante is the best year. Gots the hard top as standard and manual front latches rather than the powered ones that can "let go" at speed. Only thing it's "lacking" is the higher-powered Bose speakers which are an easy swap. I drove a Northstar Allante before buying my '89 and while it had more oompff, it wasn't significant enough to justify spending more and the '93 is extremely decontented compared with '87-92, plus the Northstar brings its own set of problems to the table. The 4.5 HO engine really is plenty quick. I think Allante values are depressed due to the ridiculous parts availability they suffer and the quality of the euro-sourced componentry within 'em. Makes Reatta ownership a comparative walk in the park. Still a gorgeous and really fun to drive car though.
  2. FLAPS- Friendly Local (or Full Line) Auto Parts Store. FSM- Factory Service Manual DVM- Digital VoltMeter: An inexpensive device for measuring current, very useful for electrical troubleshooting. CRT- Cathode Ray Tube: The TV screen in '88-89 Reattas. CRTC- Cathode Ray Tube Controller: The computer that runs the TV screen in '88-89 Reattas
  3. ABS- Antilock Braking System ALDL- Assembly Line Diagnostic Link: Plug-in port located underdash on the drivers' side with a cover marked "Do Not Remove". Utilized to connect scan tool to the cars computer system, also for accessing anti-lock brake codes. BCM- Body Control Module: Computer that controls non-engine functions within the Reatta such as climate control and lighting.
  4. Seems like we have recurring issues with newbies and the acronyms we and GM use for all sorts of stuff. I brought up 88atta's excellent post on this subject as a starting point. I'm thinking we can make a master list and sticky it if people think it would be of use. ....and yes I know it's already on Ronnie's site.

    '91 Polo

Nope. Though the state inspections are done by local repair shops so anything can get passed if your on good enough terms with the place performing it.
  6. The one with the landau bar also appears to have canvas applied to the roof if you look close. I have more of the one with the simulated 'vert top (though to be honest I'm not a fan):

So he bought it for two grand, fixed nothing and is asking for about five? While I admire his chutzpah I don't think the car is going anywhere.
  8. Day-em those are really black taillights. How do they look at night?

    90 reatta

Also to state the obvious does the security light come on ever at all?
  10. Here's a couple of "interesting" Reatta roof treatments I've seen out on the internets:
  11. I'd say we have a consensus then, no?
  12. Stay as far away from the metropolitan NYC region as you can; trust me.
  13. Awwwww. (criticism for rodded Buick in 3....2....1...)

    Brake Failure?

Angelo, Take the brake tests again. You might have a failing relay, pump or pressure switch. If this failure mode occurs again, pop open the hood (engine still running) and give the pump a couple raps with a pair of pliers or something with a bit of mass. If the pump starts running, likely it's what is in need of replacement.

Dollars to donuts it's the cracked windshield one that went for two grand a coupla months ago with a new windshield installed.
  16. Nylon High Temperature Wire Loom
  17. I put a Delco compressor with a 12-month guarantee in the '88 Seville 14 months ago, presently in the shop getting a new one installed. Went with Four Seasons this time with a 24-month guarantee.
  18. I have three (#9, 50 & 94) (blush). Historically they had been going for $ 100-150, though the third one I picked up off of eBay about a year ago I got for around 30 bucks.
  19. Color of car (in/out/moulding) would be a good minimum starting point. Sunroof? 16-ways?
  20. As someone with four rattle-prone 'E' variants, I'm pretty excited about this development. I am still curious about minimum wheel diameter and the possibility of using longer brake lines though.
  21. Barney, go to rockauto and click the part number in question and it'll give you a list of models it'll fit. Strangely, different manufacturers have variation between models fitted. Brackets and cable also show as available on rockauto if you don't want to go the junkyard route.
  22. (sigh) Well, car gave me a hiccup or two, I had the Delco adapter plate and the ICM and decided to go for it yesterday. Turned into something of a fiasco. Borrowed an 11mm open-end from my mechanic as both my sets omitted that size. Got it out thinking I'd switch the 11mm studs from old to new. Nope, need the studs as the Magnavox ICM's studs are integrated with the unit. Then I discover that the coils need long screws. Really wanted to get it rigged, so I used a bolt to hold the plate and stole a few bolts from my '94 Trans Sport's Coils. Cobbled it together and it ran like crap. Lost all confidence so I set about getting the non-goopy ICM from the '88 parts car installed with the good Magnavox coil setup. Put that in and it still ran like crap. I made the assumption that the plug wires' length indicated which terminal they went to, turns out the longest one (passenger side) went to the middle post and the second longest went to the top post. Set that right and she's back to normal. Should have been more careful about keeping track of the wires. Couple of observations. I didn't look to replace the coil pack until I had the classic symptoms of coil failure, but in replacing the coil pack it cleared up some poor running characteristics that I had just chalked up to age, a little stumbly at first start-up, a tiny bit more cranking to start compared to my lower mileage Reattas and an all-around rougher idle. Just putting it out there. So I'm going to need the 11mm studs for the adapter plate and the long coil retention bolts. Is this something I can get at Pep Boys or something or am I looking at going to a dealer? Going to a junkyard is a big production for me and paying a couple extra bucks for new bolts is not an appreciable issue.
  23. Came across this while out yesterday. Don't know anything in particular about the car or its owner. Looks very complete, though paint is a bit rough, bubbling and some runs; interior looks excellent but was difficult to get a good pic due to the sun. Car is on Long Island here in NY. Happy to help out if anyone has an interest in acquiring it.
