1. The AACA Library & Research Center will hold an auction on Monday, October 6th at the AACA Hershey Region Headquarters. Proceeds from the sale of these books, periodicals, pamphlets, etc. will be used to fill holes in the collection. For more information, including a list of the items to be auctioned, go to: http://www.aaca.org/library/ and click on "Auction." (This brings you in our "front door" and does nice things to our hit counter!) Jan K. L&RC Webmaster

3. Thanks for all the help. We'll make sure you both get copies. And the photo sure brings back memories! Vern & Jan Kamholtz
4. We're trying to get a current address for WE McLaughlin, who used to live on Oriole Parkway in Toronto, Canada. He is/was a member of the Buick Club in Canada. All references we've found on the Internet are to that old address. Some years ago we sold him our 1965 Volvo PV-544. As part of the deal, he gave us a double visible gas pump. We've finally gotten the pump restored and reassembled and would like to show him how it turned out. Any leads would be appreciated. Jan & Vern Kamholtz Wauwatosa, WI
5. Note: I'm posting this information on behalf of a member of the Wisconsin Region AACA. The car is advertised for sale in the current issue of Antique Automobile, but the phone number is incorrect. We've also included it on our website's classifieds page at: http://www.aaca.org/wisconsin/classifieds.htm Jan K. Wis Region ___________________________ Strong #2 condition; AACA 1st Junior; VCCA Preservation Award. 55,685 original miles. Power glide. Hampton interior. $14,000/offer. For more information, contact Bob Zens (Brookfield, WI), 262/780-0631.
6. This is a great meet! It's so much fun to see these old race cars circling the track. Believe me, they don't hold back! If you're anywhere near Wisconsin State Fair Park that weekend, plan to attend. There's plenty of parking in the immediate vacinity. Jan K. Wis Region

New Baby

Congratulations to both you and your wife, Sal, and welcome to little Olivia! We trust that the whole family is doing well. Get used to sleepless nights, worrying about things that never occurred to you to worry about before, healthy photo bills (babies change DAILY at this age) and baby spit on your clothing. But it's all worth it! We look forward to seeing pictures, and hearing "you won't believe what she did" stories. Don't hesitate to share! Jan & Vern Kamholtz Wis Region
8. Vern and I sat with Bob Zenter at one of the awards banquets a few years ago. We also exchanged newsletters with him for a while. He was a very nice gentleman, always willing to share his knowledge. His family's loss is also a loss for the AACA. We'll miss him. Jan K. Wis Region
9. Please tell your region and chapter members about the Library website at http://www.aaca.org/library (particularly the Book Reviews page). We're always on the lookout for new material for that page, and we'd love to get input from more of the membership. Fran's doing an admirable job--she's compiled the bulk of the reviews--but her eyes and hands have got to be getting tired. If anyone has any questions about appropriate recommendations and/or how to submit them, have them contact Fran Shore at ShoreInMedia@aol.com or me at jkamholtz@hotmail.com Thanks for your help! 10. I'm an information researcher by day. One piece of helpful advice I offer business clients is to run an occasional vanity search (full company name, executive names) to see what information about their business and/or key executives may be referenced or posted. The last time I demonstrated this to a client, I used the AACA as my example. You can imagine my surprise when this website showed up in the search results! That just goes to show how well Peter and his crew have crafted and maintained the AACA national site. Websites are all about visibility, after all. Jan K. Wis Region
11. I just saw the listing of Golden Quill Award winners in the May 8th issue of Old Cars Weekly. The AACA is well represented on the list. Congratulations to all the winners! Jan K. Wis Region
12. I wasn't looking to depress anyone either. I apologize if my comments had that effect! I'm afraid I'm just a realist, so I think it's unwise to look to the entrenched for "new and exciting." That said, there are a lot of people hard at work looking for the new and exciting, because no one has told them yet that it couldn't be done. If you ever have free time to burn, take a stroll through the patent section of the USPTO website. Seeing the variety of newly patented products and processes should give you hope for the future. There are thousands of new patents issuing every year and some of them are truly awe-inspiring. (Plenty of others are quirky and amusing, and on first glance, completely useless.) For most inventors, however, the downfall is finding the money to mass market their inventions. Jan K. Wis Region
13. And if you listen to conspiracy theorists, how many truly revolutionary automotive developments have been quashed because they were a threat to the status quo? Frankly, the automotive industry is too well established (read: entrenched) as a market to tolerate radical change. The bureaucracies alone would hold up any attempts beyond incremental change, and even those changes would be suspect (and usually government-mandated). New players with revolutionary ideas would almost inevitably be blocked by the existing leaders, for fear of losing their market share. You'd have to be well-funded to take on the major automakers. Now, if you introduced a flying car or a transporter system a la Star Trek, anything that made the existing automotive product obsolete, THEN you might see some technological advances! Jan K. 14. The Paste-Special trick was one that Peter G. offered up at the website seminar last year or the year before. Thanks for pointing out that it works for word processing purposes too! Sometimes things can be so obvious, but I still overlook the connection. At least I can sleep well tonight, 'cause I learned something new today! Jan K. Wis Region
15. You'll want to be careful as you cut and paste. On occasion pictures are embedded in an article and you'll pick those up too. These pictures don't always "play nice" once they get into your word processor. Deleting the picture will sometimes delete all the text, too. In those situations, I found it easier to cut and paste the article in pieces, avoiding the area with the picture(s), and then type in the words that weren't caught in the cut-and-paste. Now if there's an easier way around this problem, please enlighten me. I don't think I'm too old to learn! Jan K. Wis Region
16. We do things a bit differently in the Wisconsin Region. We have an elected nine-member Board of Directors. The members elect the directors to three-year terms (1/3 change each year), and the directors elect the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The directors hold monthly meetings to handle all the business of the club. Minutes of these meetings are published in the newsletter, and members are always notified about the date and location of these meetings, should they want to attend. Every February, we have an Annual Banquet which doubles as our annual business meeting. The Board tries to offer, on average, one event a month for the members to get together. In the winter months, that may be a fish fry or a brunch, any excuse to get together with friends and talk about cars. For some of these events we'll have speakers, show videos or plan some other entertainment. During Wisconsin car season (May-October), we'll have tours, car shows, parades, picnics, joint events with other local clubs, whatever someone thinks would be interesting to the members that would allow them to drive a collector car at the same time. Bottom line: The Board and the various committee members mix business and pleasure; for everyone else in the region, it's nothing but fun. Jan K. Wis Region
17. Sure enough, we got our paperwork in the mail yesterday. I've already filled it out and it will be sent back in today's mail. Less chance to lose it if I do it right away! Jan K. Wis Region
18. I was able to snag some of these tickets from Kim Miller at the Trade Show. I plan to bring the tickets to all of our local events and push them until they're gone. Who knows, maybe I'll have to arrange to get more! I'm tempted to set up a challenge to other chapters/regions, but I'm not the world's greatest salesperson. I'd be bound to lose! What I like about this raffle is that it's a cruise or a trip of your own choosing. And you can get a lot of trip for $5000! By the way, I was told that the date on the tickets is wrong. Next year's Annual Meeting is actually on the following weekend, so the winner will be announced on Feb. 14, 2004. Jan K. Wis Region
19. Now I'm confused. Is there separate paperwork for the newsletter contest or is it included on the Officer Reporting Sheet? Jan K. Wis Region
20. You'll need to enter your car into a "National" meet. These meets are hosted by regions in various parts of the country, and the places change every year (except the Fall Meet in Hershey). Typically, there's a spring and fall meet in each of the divisions. Check out the events section on the AACA homepage for a list of upcoming meets. Note: You will need to preregister for these meets through National. You should be able to register on-line, through the AACA National website, or use the materials that come with your copy of Antique Automobile Magazine. Good luck with your new vehicle! I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of it. Jan K. Wis Region

New Here

Welcome to the DF! I look forward to reading your posts. Don't be shy -- most of the rest of us aren't. Jan K. Wis Region
22. Starting last year (I think) the info for the newsletter contest was included as a section on the officer reporting form submitted by the secretary. Less paperwork going to national. You may want to check with your secretary to make sure your info has been entered appropriately, and more importantly, submitted. I think that form was due March 1st, but don't quote me! Jan K. Wis Region
23. We try to get to the Miller Meet every time they put it on. It's amazing how well these older vehicles take to the track! There's a small fee to get into the general area, and an option to purchase a pit pass. This year those prices are $5 & $25. Note: Children under 16 aren't allowed in the pit area after 10:00 a.m. That's when the cars start racing. Jan K. Wis Region
24. Your first point of contact -- whether it be with a car club, a business or even a particular family -- is critical to how you perceive the whole. That's why it's so important for clubs to assign their best people to these positions, so the first impression made is a good one. You can still be firm about preregistrations/registrations, times, etc., but there's no reason you can't also be gracious and friendly as you explain the situation. And a good dose of common sense never hurts, because sometimes situations arise where it is logical to bend or break a rule. It sounds like this particular circumstance would have been one of those cases. Biggarmike, I'm glad you're not letting one instance stop you from looking into AACA. Please don't let one individual stop you from joining what might be a great local chapter. Consider giving them another chance before writing them off. Jan K. Wis Region
25. I heard at the Annual Meeting that there's a new raffle to benefit the AACA Library and Musuem. The prize is a $5000 CRUISE or TRIP (arranged through AAA); the winner will have their own choice of crusies or trip for dates of their own choosing. The winner will be announced at next year's Annual Meeting. Tickets are $5.00 each. I took some tickets back with me to sell within the Wis Region and I encourage the rest of you to call, write or e-mail (libraryaaca@aol.com)Kim Miller for tickets also. (Just understand that I, of course, already hold the winning ticket. ) Mustang raffle tickets will also be on sale, $2.00/each or 3 for $5.00. You can get them at any AACA event throughout the year. The Mustang will be awarded at the Hershey Eastern Division Fall Meet. This year's Mustang is a 1965 white coupe with a red interior, freshly restored, with a 6 cyl. engine. Who wouldn't want to be see driving around in it? Jan K. Wis Region http://www.aaca.org/library/
