  1. By the way, my letter came from Janet Ricketts, Chairman Internet Committee. Jan K. Wis Region
  2. VASA = Swedish Space program. I passed that one on to my parents! They got a chuckle out of it. VASA is a Swedish Cultural Fraternal Organization. It started out as a fraternal organization, helping people immigrating from Sweden to the US. They offered interpreter services, lent them money, found them transportation, etc. The emphasis has since shifted to preserving the culture and traditions of the "old county." I regard it as a Swedish equivalent to our AACA, in that they have regions and chapters and international members. My mother's parents were both born in Sweden so she's their ticket into VASA. (My father's side is German through and through.) Idle Swede: I'll scan the article and save it as a .pdf. It will be easier to email it to you that way, and you'll get to see the nice color picture that accompanied the article. Jan K. Wis Region
  3. Vern just called to tell me that I got an envelope from National AACA in today's mail. Normally he lets me open my own mail, but given the source, he knew that I wouldn't mind if he peeked. I'm glad he did, because it said that our website has received another Master Webmaster award. Who else has gotten one of this "late" Christmas presents? There's got to be more of you out there! Jan K. Wis Region
  4. Thanks for the offer, but I won't need to put you to the trouble. My mother is going to get one of her local VASA friends to translate it for us. Jan K. Wis Region
  5. Two Swedish couples -- friends of my parents -- came to Milwaukee this past summer for the big Harley celebration. During their stay, they visited our home and we gave them a ride in the Big Buick. They took a few pictures and that was the end of it, or so we thought. Imagine our surprise when a copy of an Enkoping newspaper article appeared in the mail! Everyone likes to see his or her car featured in the newspaper, right? Well, that's what happened to us when one of our visitors wrote an article about their stay in Milwaukee for their local newspaper. Our one regret was that we couldn't really read the article, because it was written in Swedish. Side note: That same article might have given me that name I was seeking for my '64 Rambler. Through some miscommunication somewhere along the way, it was referred to as a "Rumbler" in the article. We got a good chuckle out of that error and the name may just stick. Jan K. Wis Region
  6. When we first started dating my husband was driving a beat up old station wagon he had picked up cheap post-divorce. He called it the Leopard because it had so many spots. Our '37 Buick was dubbed the Big Buick years ago by our youngest son and the name has stuck. (Not terribly creative, I know, but the car does look huge to a small child.) No name for the '64 Rambler yet. I'll have to give it some thought. Jan K. Wis Region
  7. Has anyone actually SEEN Rocky's letter??? Jan K. Wis Region
  8. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone in AACA! May all your holiday wishes come true. Jan K. Wis Region
  9. In previous years, those announcements always seemed to come in right before Christmas, so we regarded them as early Christmas presents. On a related note, over the past two years I've heard rumors that the annual meeting committee was thinking of giving out the Master Editor/Master Webmaster awards at the afternoon meeting (or some other alternate time) instead of at the Saturday banquet. Has anyone heard any more about this? Jan K. Wis Region
  10. Late last week we had wind chills in the single digits first thing in the morning and temps in the lower 20's during the day. We just had our first measurable snowfall on Sunday. This morning it was a balmy 38F, so it's all melting. I like to see a dusting of snow at Christmastime, but it's the blizzards I can do without! I'd love to see 59F around here. Heck, it doesn't even feel like it's 59 in the house these days! Jan K. Wis Region
  11. I mentioned my previous post to Kim Miller, L&RC librarian, and she wasted no time compiling a list of books she'd like to have for the library. To see the list, go to: http://www.aaca.org/library/book_wish_list.htm The next set of reviews will appear in January. Fran likes to work a bit ahead, so she's already collecting for February. Send her your reviews whenever they're ready. Jan K. Wis Region
  12. Some of you might be hesitant to write reviews after seeing the lengthy ones that Fran often writes. Don't worry, reviews can be short and sweet OR full of details. There are so many good auto-related books and articles out there, and reviews are one way to keep up with what's available. Another thought: Maybe Kim Miller could put together a "wish list" of books she'd like to add to the collection and we can post it on the website. If you find you have a bit of change left over after Christmas, buy one of the books on the list or choose one of your own favorites. Read the book, write a review, then donate the book to the library. I'll do it if you will! Jan K. Wis Region
  13. And was it Mae West who said, "If you got it, flaunt it." Jan K. Wis Region
  14. Ron puts out a great newsletter. We always read it cover to cover when it arrives in our mailbox. I'm going to miss hearing his two cent "ramblings" each month. That said, we always read ALL the AACA newsletters sent to us. Every one of them has something to offer in its unique way. And we are encouraged to see the progress many of them are making as they strive to improve each issue. Terry makes a good point (which our region has learned the hard way). The editor MUST be an active member, one who knows the local members, are clear on what those members expect from the newsletter, and most importantly, how hard to push those buttons to get support when needed. Like Ron, Vern and I are stepping down as editors with this issue. We just finished up the December Beam, and are looking forward to being "just members" for a while. We've served three stints as editors, and while we'll probably be back for a fourth at some point, it's past time for us to take a step back. Jan K. Wis Region
  15. What I find most amazing about Judy is her generosity. She will tell you where she gets stuff, how much it might cost, offer you her own stuff, and teach you how to do everything she can do (if you have the patience and the talent to learn it). While some people fear to help others out of some misplaced idea that it would lessen their own value or product, she forges ahead, dragging all of us to even higher levels. And the AACA is the better for it! Jan K. Wis Region
  16. Such an honor -- and given to someone worthy of it! Peter, sir, (or should that be Sir Peter?), your dedication to the hobby has been proven time and again. It's only fitting that you be sentenced, um, sorry, appointed to the Board. And your youth (relatively speaking) and vitality are bound to shake up a few of the more seasoned Board members -- not that this would be the first time! And I agree with the many others who believe that Dave would be pleased that you were appointed to replace him. Jan K. Wis Region
  17. Same for me. I'm on the computer all week, so turning in on and waiting for dialup on the weekend is some form of torture! However, since I'm the boss, the flunky, the janitor and everything else, there's really no one to question the time I spend on this forum during the workweek. Jan K. Wis Region
  18. I'd like to lend a hand, but I don't know how many back issues I have access to. And what's your time frame? Jan K. Wis Region
  19. In our area of Wisconsin we're lucky to see anything under $40 a month (unheated), but rates rarely exceed $75. We've got space for our cars in a heated garage for a bit more than the minimum, which is great for our pocketbook, but the garage isn't in the best part of town. And when the cars are in, they're in until we pull them back out for the season. In a perfect world we'd add another detached two car garage to the property, or extend the existing garage to add another two spaces. But as we all know, the world ain't perfect! I've often wondered what the breakeven point would be, though, between renting storage and building our own. I suspect it would be sooner rather than later.... Jan K. Wis Region
  20. We've owned both a Plymouth Voyager and now a Chrysler Town & Country. We bought the first new and the second used. If I had to do it over again, I'd definitely buy another T&C. It is the most comfortable ride, and very easy to get kids in and out of. One suggestion: Look for captain's chairs for the middle row. The bench seat just doesn't cut it if you put two kids there. The captain's chairs will help to keep them apart. It also makes transporting adults much more comfortable. Plus, if you're hauling stuff, you can take one out and leave the other if you need the extra seat. The bench seat is all or nothing. My parents had a Plymouth Caravan that they used as a delivery van for their business. They sold it at two years old with 150,000 miles on it, and their mechanic bought it and put another 100,000 miles on it. Then he sold it to someone else. I've bought a few cars, all used, in my lifetime and all of them turned out to be "worst buys" according to Consumer Reports. Luckily for me, I must have purchased one of the only good ones each time, because my experience never paralleled the reports. Jan K. Wis Region
  21. Vern and I will do our best to get there again this year. Last year we were lucky to have arrived just before the big snow, and we pulled out on Sunday just before the area got hit again. Now that we've made the drive twice, we've discovered that it really isn't that bad. Flying is definitely faster, though! Advice for the new attendees: 1. Plan on some time for sightseeing if you've never been to Philadelphia before. Many of us come in on Thursday to allow time to do just that. 2. Attend the seminars. The wealth of information is truly incredible. You may even find yourself with two choices in the same timeslot. 3. Check out the Trade Show. Let the vendors know that we appreciate their support and sign up for some great door prizes. 4. Visit the hospitality rooms. You'll always find friendly faces there. 5. Hang around the mezzanine. Another great place to see fellow members. 6. Eat at least one meal at St. George's. Good wholesome food at great prices. Many of us DF'ers go there for breakfast and/or lunch. Jan K. Wis Region
  22. Let's see. I'll freely admit to being 46. (Vern can weigh in on his own, if he wants to.) Vern's Buick Century is 66. My Rambler American is 39. Vern's Cadillac Sedan De Ville is 11, working towards collector status. My Chrysler T&C is 5. We've got two kids in their 30's, one in his 20's and Scott brings up the rear at 10. Grandchildren are 6, 5, 4, and 1. And our home is 72. Note: Vern worked in a museum, so he really likes old stuff. I'm one of the few new things he ever took a second look at! But it won't be much longer and I'll fit right in with the rest of his old stuff.... <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Jan K. Wis Region
  23. I'm still here, just not as often. Getting my new business up and running has taken up a lot of my free time lately. Yes, I'm still at Fran Shore's beck and call, updating the library website, and I serve on her committee promoting youth in the hobby. In addition, Vern and I are editors of The Beam (the Wis Region monthly newsletter), and I'm also the web editor for the region. I'm a past president of the region, and I have my own collector car (thanks to my husband, who knows that one way to get and keep a woman interested in the hobby is to give her a good reason). Like Judy, I don't offer up much on the technical issues, because that isn't my area of expertise. I'm more inclined to offer my 2 cents when it comes to the enjoyment end of the hobby. I must confess, I'm an Internet junkie, so you'll find me on the Forum any time I can get a free moment. Thanks for noticing my absence! Jan K. Wis Region
  24. Here in southeastern Wisconsin most of the cars get put away in November or December. We like to garage our everyday cars in the winter, so our two collectors get put into storage starting in December. We usually bring them home again around May 1st, weather permitting. (We can still get snow that late in the year here.) Some of our members have enough space at home or "easy out" storage situations. They're the ones who drive for the local Christmas and St Patrick's Day parades. Vern was glad the convertible was home yesterday. It was over 80 degrees and sunny. Today we're back to upper 50s and overcast. So much for Indian summer. Jan K. Wis Region
  25. I've posted this on the General Forum and the Buy/Sell Forum. Please do what you can to let your membership know about this auction. Thanks for your help! __________________________ The AACA Library & Research Center will hold an auction on Monday, October 6th at the AACA Hershey Region Headquarters. Proceeds from the sale of these books, periodicals, pamphlets, etc. will be used to fill holes in the collection. For more information, including a list of the items to be auctioned, go to: http://www.aaca.org/library/ and click on "Auction." (This brings you in our "front door" and does nice things to our hit counter!) Jan K. L&RC Webmaster
