  1. There's no place like home, Judy. Back in the early 80's I spent 31 straight days in the hospital recovering from a virus. Even though the food was tolerable and they had color TV in every room, I couldn't wait for the day I could go home to my own bed. Of course, now that you're home, I suppose a sympathy card is in order -- for poor Barker! Jan K. Wis Region
  2. This one will make the rounds among our friends! Thanks for sharing. Vern thought it was hysterical, but then he HATES cats. Jan K. Wis Region
  3. Beautiful sign. I'm just glad we had the opportunity to see and take a picture of the old one earlier this month! Jan K. Wis Region
  4. Thanks for sharing, Barker. I'd like to send Judy a card, since she's been temporarily disconnected from the AACA lifeline. Would you be willing to post an address or email one to me privately? Jan K. Wis Region
  5. I am SO jealous of those who are able to attend this tour. Arizona is a beautiful state. Plus, it's a heck of a lot warmer than Wisconsin right now. Wishing good roads and beautiful sunsets to all who participate! Jan K. Wis Region
  6. I'll add some of our pictures to the stack once I've had a chance to clean them up and/or crop them down. By the way, we got one nice one of Scott and Mike accepting their first chip from Doug Drake. I will send you that one and a couple of others that include Mike. Watch your email. Jan K. Wis Region
  7. We're finally home. It only took until 1:00 today (Monday). Good weather and clear roads all the way. Just the way I like it! Vern peeked in on the DF luncheon, but Scott and I lost track of time in the Trade Show area and missed it entirely. (We were working on his model and didn't want to stop while we were on a roll.) Jan K. Wis Region
  8. That's when the printed lists are available. I thought the names were posted on the Forum a week or two before the annual meeting last year. Instead of wondering, I thought I'd ask! Jan K. Wis Region
  9. When will the new list for the Publications committee be available? I'm getting ready to turn over my newsletter label files to the new editor, and that info would be helpful. Jan K. Wis Region
  10. I have clothes with the AACA logo (in fact, I'm wearing one of the sweaters today), and I have a sweatshirt with the museum logo. Will the library ever offer anything to wear with its logo on it? A thought: To avoid maintaining a large supply of clothing items for each fundraising body, consider consolidating the clothing options. Them make it possible for people to choose the logo of their choice when they place their order. You may find people ordering more items, since they would have more options to choose from. Jan K. 11. Just who you calling trash? Seriously, I think Judy's idea is great. I hope the box lunches are close by. Jan K. Wis Region
  12. When Vern and I were editors we often featured car photos on the cover of the Beam, but asked for a story to go along with it. Then we provided up to six copies of the issue to the author, so he or she could share it with friends and family. We considered this a marketing expense and the region gladly covered it. Besides, without those stories, we would have had a hard time finding enough content for the issue--and our members wanted content! Jan K. Wis Region
  13. I always figure that if the cars are on display and there are no "no cameras allowed" signs posted anywhere, then I am free to snap away. Of course, if I got a story out of any of the participants, I'd ask them for their name and address so that I could mail them a copy or two of the issue. That always goes over big! Jan K. Wis Region
  14. Vern and I visited this fine establishment last year: http://www.independencebrewpub.com/ It's down near the market on 1150 Filbert Street, so it's not as close as St. George's, but the beer is definitely worth the walk! Jan K. Wis Region
  15. Who edits the online version of the Newsletter manual? There's a mistake in the first paragraph on page one that jumped out at me: "This Editors Manual has been prepared by the members of the AACA Regions Committee and Publications Committee to insist [assist?] region and chapter newsletter editors in their efforts to produce effective communications." Sorry, it's a blessing and a curse.... Jan K. Wis Region
  16. Debby, I suggest you take advantage of the newsletter exchange program. One can learn a lot from what others are doing, and it may give you ideas on how to fill the blank pages in each issue. And I know from my own experience that the other editors, from Master Editors on down, will be very willing to answer your questions. Remember, there are NO stupid questions. We're all just in different places on the learning curve that has no end. You'll be answering questions yourself before you realize it! Jan K. Wis Region
  17. As of yesterday, it looks like we WILL be coming to Philly after all. I put our names in before, but now you can ink us in. And please, don't misunderstand my comments above. I LOVE meeting at St. George's and strongly feel we should continue to do so as long as space allows. However, the DF group is growing and we're bound to outgrow the space before too long. Since time is always of the essence, the hotel seemed a likely alternative spot to gather. Hey, if enough of you guys chip in, Vern and I will get a suite and we can hold the party there! (The sandwich shops deliver, right? And one or two of us could make the requisite beer run. How heavy is a keg?) Jan K. Wis Region
  18. Speaking as a mother of a 10 year old Junior member... I encourage any programs that get and keep the younger members interested in the hobby. I also strongly feel, however, that any rewards received should be earned, not given out solely for showing up. There's no incentive if everyone gets the same thing, regardless of effort. We need to excite the kids, get their curiosity involved and immerse them willingly in the vast amount of car knowledge out there. Rewards can be one of the "carrots" that get them started on the path. From Doug's explanation, it sounds like this program is in line with my preferences. Yes, JC Taylor provides gifts for the kids in attendance. Fine. But the chips appear to be restricted to those who choose to take it a step further. Jan K. Wis Region

    Club tours

Our region puts on a Spring Tour (usually a day trip, occasionally an overnighter) and a Fall Tour (1-2 night tour) each year. We may have other day trips as well. We tend to tour as a group, with "modern iron" bringing up the rear. Participants like to have written directions, in case someone has to make an unplanned stop or will arrive late, but if you're not the lead car, you rarely have to refer to them. Before the tour, we try to exchange cell phone numbers, especially with the tour leader. We firmly believe that NO ONE gets left behind, and cell phones help us deal with the occasional breakdowns. ("Things under control, go on without out us" vs. "Anyone have a XX wrench or a quart of oil on you?") We tend to take the back roads whenever possible, so speed isn't usually an issue. We all go slow because that's the way the roads are posted. We have a couple of leadfooted tour leaders, though, and they have gotten away from us on occasion. That's when the new "first in line" brings out the directions and takes over -- at least until we catch up with the leader, who by then has stopped to find out where his followers went. We plan lots of stops on our tours. Sometimes people stay longer at a stop and catch up with the tour at a later stop. Sometimes people skip a stop to give themselves more time at a later stop. But we do enjoy being together, so most of the group tours like a caravan, but not quite bumper to bumper. Some of the kids will even ride with someone else until the next stop; occasionally one of the adults will do the same if the conversation they're having is interesting enough! One of our members organized a rally a few years ago and it was fun. The organizer absolutely should run the route shortly beforehand, in case last minute changes are necessary. Our beginning mileage was recorded, and we left the starting point at five minute intervals. Our ending mileage was recorded when we arrived at our destination, where we also surrendered our question sheet. The winner was determined not only by the number of correct questions, but also by the actual mileage driven. Note: Several couples had a lot of making up to do after the rally, because the drivers had been vocally upset about the quality and accuracy of their navigators' instructions. Jan K. Wis Region
  20. St. George's is really a great, inexpensive place to go for the DF'ers luncheon, but if we ever found that the group got too large, I'm sure the hotel itself could find a room for us. (Given all the money AACA drops at the hotel each year, the room may even be available for free.) Last year the kids had a pizza luncheon in a room off the lobby. We could consider doing something similar if space became a problem. For me, the "where" is less important than meeting all the "Whos" who choose to attend. Jan K. Wis Region
  21. Judy, what you should be thinking is, "How will I share all this information in the short time they're giving me?" You have much more to offer than you give yourself credit for. People will be hanging on your every word during the seminar, following you out the door with more questions, and catching you later at odd moments for a follow up question or two! And, yes, you may think you were "only an attendee" at these sessions for the past few years, but you weren't a silent participant. The rest of us benefited from the comments you made during the give and take portions of the seminar, and from one-on-one conversations at other times. Those of us who learned from your experiences (good and bad) thank you for the generosity you demonstrated in sharing! Jan K. Wis Region
  22. Wonderful news, Dick. And congratulations to Elaine for the well-deserved recognition of all her hard work. Start looking for a place to hang that plaque! Jan K. Wis Region
  23. If we make it to the meeting this year, we'll be there (Vern, Scott and me). If not, we'll be there in spirit! Jan K. Wis Region
  24. This must be the day for good news! Vern just called to say the mailman brought us a nice letter too. The Beam has won the Master Editor again, so we'll go out on a high note. Congratulations to all the winners! We're flattered to be included in such a talented group. We take nothing for granted, because every year the bar gets raised just a bit higher. That reminds me. If you've been exchanging newsletters with us, you may want to send future issues to the new editors, Lars & Joan Anderson. Their mailing info will be in the January issue, which will go out later this month. Jan K. Wis Region
  25. Way to go, Rocky! The Spark Plug Award! That's a real honor. Bask in the glory for a while..... As for me, I'm still trying to figure out how I managed to slip into the select group of Webmasters. Thanks for all your kind words on my win. Jan K. Wis Region
